Guardians, Gavin Williams Win ‘Beautiful’ Pitcher’s Duel vs. Phillies
Cleveland Guardians' Gavin Williams and Philadelphia Phillies' Cristopher Sanchez put together an old-fashioned pitcher's duel.

In today's iteration of Major League Baseball, it's rare that we see two starting pitchers go back and forth, blow for blow, inning for inning, and to give us an old-fashioned pitcher's duel.
But on Friday evening, Gavin Williams and Christopher Sanchez did just that as they put together one of the top pitcher's duels we've seen in the regular season, truly in recent memory.
And on top of that, the Guardians were even able to come away with a one nothing victory in what really felt like a playoff game and had those high leverage vibes from the first pitch of the game to the final pitch.
And like I said, starting with Gavin Williams, he was phenomenal on Friday evening against the Phillies.
He ended up pitching eight innings.
He ended up allowing just four hits.
He walked no batters and struck out eleven hitters as well.
And the key to all of this was his sweeper, which he introduced to his arsenal or really started to use more of in the middle of two thousand and twenty-five, and that was responsible for his post All-Star break breakout, I guess you could call it.
And so far, it's been the same exact thing in two thousand and twenty-six, and that was fully on display against the Phillies.
He ended up generating ten swings and misses against truly a star-studded Phillies lineup featuring Kyle Schwarber, who struck out four times in the game, Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and the list goes on as well.
But on the other side of that, Christopher Sanchez of the Phillies was just as effective and just as dominant as Williams as well.
In fact, he was coming into the start with a scoreless inning streak of twenty-nine point two innings.
He had not given up a run, or still hasn't given up a run since April thirtieth, as the Guardians were not able to get to him, as they also were able to generate four hits and then two walks, but they were not able to score off him as well.
And by the time both pitchers exited in the eighth inning, it was left up to the bullpen, and with a familiar face in Johan Duran, who Minnesota Twins closer for a few years, as the Guardians know very well, Kyle Manzardo pinch hit, and he ended up hitting a solo home run on the first pitch he saw in the ninth inning, which ended up being the difference maker in this game as well.
And just going back to that pitcher's duel really quick, one stat that I saw that I think really just encapsulates how great of a just baseball game this was.
It was the first matchup since nineteen eighty-eight, since pitches were first tracked, that both starters, through eight or more innings, allowed zero runs, struck out six or more batters, and each threw under one hundred pitches.
And I think the quote just to finish this off and to leave it here is what Stephen Vogt said after the game.
He said, "What a beautiful game.
If you like pitching, you would have really liked tonight's game."
And that's exactly what it was.
And I think hopefully moving forward, we'll see more pitcher's duels like this.
But again, with where baseball is at, I think that Friday night, William Sanchez is just something we have to embrace and really look back on and, and love because it's not what the normal form we see in baseball today.
