Houston Texans Acquire David Montgomery from Lions
The Houston Texans amp up their offense by acquiring running back David Montgomery from the Detroit Lions, strengthening their power and short-yardage attack.

Let's start with a significant bit of news out of Detroit and Houston, where the Texans have landed David Montgomery from the Lions.
This one-two punch of Monty and Gibbs had been a force for some time, though this past year with Montgomery getting a little banged up and Gibbs getting another year of just improvement, I guess, they started to pull away from one another.
Houston in desperate need of help at the running back position.
How do you feel about them landing David Montgomery here?
Well, I think it's an added upgrade to the offense.
They did have Joe N- Mixon a couple of years ago, didn't play all of last year, and they released him.
They had Woody Marks and Nick Chubb, but certainly not home run hitters.
David Montgomery is still productive and can catch the football out of the backfield.
He's a dominant goal line back, and with that offense with C.J.
Stroud, I think it's an upgrade.
I still think they should be in the market for a more explosive home run hitter, but he's added in that offense I think will benefit Houston moving forward.
Does he change them, Kevin, from all of a sudden, let's say, a 10 or an 11-win football team to potentially a 14-win football team?
No.
But you solidify the rushing attack, and we know that's what DeMeco Ryans and that staff wanna do.
They wanna run the football, they wanna sustain drives, keep opposing offenses on the sidelines, and he helps that offense do that in 2026.
You know, I think for Houston, I am a little conflicted, Joe, in that I think they absolutely are right to try and upgrade the running back room.
We don't know if we'll ever see Joe Mixon again.
Nick Chubb, unfortunately, has had his career derailed through injury.
And Woody Marks is a fine player, Joe.
I don't think he's an elite, soon-to-be elite running back.
But I think about this Texans season, and I think you'll agree with this, right?
Because you specifically take a lot of issues with how they operate offensively.
And I think, too, what was their defining play call, and it was when on third and one, and it didn't work, and on fourth and one, they just handed it up the gut.
And getting David Montgomery feels as if their lesson isn't, "Oh, our offensive line isn't good," or, "Our play calling is safe," or, "Our play calling's predictable."
No, no, no.
"We just need a different guy who can bulldoze, Joe, for one singular yard."
Montgomery is better at that, but I still worry about the infrastructure of Houston's offense.
I, I agree with you, and I think when you look at their skilled players and take the running backs out of it for just one second, right?
They have Nico Collins that could be potentially as dominant and a- as any pure number one as long as he can stay healthy, right?
But then they have more pedestrian wide receivers.
Noel and Higgins are good.
They're certainly not elite.
Tank Dell's on schedule at least to play potentially this year.
If he could bounce back to the player that he was pre-injury, now you're cooking, right?
They still need to open up the offense as it relates to the wide receivers and throw it first to open up the rushing attack.
But David Montgomery helps them in the passing game, too, Kevin.
I think he's a better receiver than Woody Marks.
He's certainly- Sure a better receiver- Sure at this point in his career than Nick Chubb.
Nick Chubb is more at the back nine than he is anything else.
He could be maybe an added, you know, body later in the season, but David Montgomery is an upgrade from Nick Chubb.
But y- to your point, if they're expecting David Montgomery to be like a Joe Mixon-esque type of running back the way he was a couple of years ago for this team, that's not the type of running back Montgomery is at this point in his career.
