Islanders come up empty in shutout loss to Sabres, bench Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee

For Islanders head coach Patrick Roy, the Buffalo Sabres ' goal to make it 2-0 in the second period "hurt us" and proved to be the turning point in their 5-0 loss. He was not happy with forwards Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee's failure to backcheck on the play and benched them for the third period. Roy: "i don't like to do this but the standard here is to win." Barzal didn't address the benching directly, only saying "we need better positioning there."
