A unique situation allowed New York Islanders coach Patrick Roy and GM Mathieu Darche to speak face-to-face with recently acquired Brayden Schenn to convince him to waive his no-trade clause and accept a deal.

The New York Islanders are going all in at the deadline.
They win the sweepstakes, if you wanna call it that, for St. Louis Blues center Brayden Schenn, and going the other way to St. Louis is a first, a third, and a prospect.
But aside from what you had to give up, if you're the Islanders, Ryan, what does this tell you about the kinda season that New York has had this year?
Well, obviously it's, it, it's great for Isles fans, to, you know, to see a team being a buyer.
I, I do think it was a steep price to pay, for Brayden Schenn, who is, is not the same Brayden Schenn, you know, that he was sort of in his prime helping the, the St. Louis Blues, to a Stanley Cup.
But he's a, you know, he's a physical guy.
he's a center, which is always important.
I think he's kind of, you know At this point you can only expect him really to be a middle six talent.
He didn't have a great, you know, offensive production last year, when they played Winnipeg in the first round.
He only had three points in seven games.
But, you know, for the Islanders, who aren't a big offensive juggernaut, he will certainly help.
He'll make them hard to play against.
And really, I think, you know, what sort of, getting back to your original question, a lot of this is about Matthew Schaffer- Yeah dragging the Islanders into the playoffs just with his, his overall game and the way he's transitions the puck to unlock some of these forwards that they do have.
Yeah.
Like, and you mentioned, like, what the Islanders needed, if they are gonna, you know, keep this momentum going, is some depth down the middle.
Like, we know they have Bo Horvat.
You know, Matthew Barzal's been playing the wing more than center, so y- you're really looking at Horvat and then, you know, it kinda drops off a cliff there.
So I get it.
I think Schenn's probably on a good team.
He's probably your number three center.
unfortunately on the Islanders, he's gotta be playing in the top six role, and we'll see with, you know, a change of scenery whether that can benefit him.
But to your point, you know, this, this is Matthew Schaffer effect all the way.
Like, he's gonna win the Calder this year.
We're gonna see if the Islanders can make some noise.
But, you know, hats off to, you know, Matthew Schaffer for convincing Matthew Darsh to make the kind of move that I don't think a lot of us force- foresaw happening at the beginning of this year.
