Could the Detroit Lions deploy a guard rotation against the Saints?
Let's examine.
I'm John Mccaroon, Detroit Lions NSI.
Speaking to reporters, head coach Dan Campbell was asked about the possibility if Christian Mahogany and Ben Barch battled it out this week in practice, if the decision was made that both were playing at a high level, could Dan Campbell decide to play both against the Saints?
And what Dan Campbell offered was real interesting to examine because it could open up some challenges for the offensive line.
Dan Campbell indicated that this week.
Christian Mahogany and Ben Barch would split reps all throughout practice, uh, practice being on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday this week, ahead of the season opener.
And if both don't, if one of the two players that could be the starting left guard, if Mahogany or Barch don't distinguish themselves, the Lions might play both.
Do I think that could happen?
It's possible, but I do think that.
The Lions coaching staff, all throughout training camp and throughout the summer have wanted Mahogany to win the job, but Barch has been injured, and the injury to Cade Mays forced Drew Scruggs, who was also in competition for the guard spot as well, to play center.
So, really, Christian Mahogany didn't have too much threat in regards to his position, but I do think it's a mistake.
To have a guard rotation.
If you recall, Matt Patricia tried a guard rotation and just did not work out with Kenny Wiggins, Joe Dah, Graham Glasgow.
It just really caused issues along the offensive line, and it could cause a challenge for the Detroit Lions.
Also this week, splitting reps in regards to the cohesion that needs to take place between Pene Sewell, Mahogany, Juice Scrub.
Doggs, Tate Ratledge, and Blake Miller, you would think that you would want one cohesive unit going out there preparing.
Now, could this be a little bit of gamesmanship?
Could be.
I do think in the end that Christian Mahogany will end up winning the job, but this week at practice, Christian Mahogany and Ben Barch will take reps, and head coach Dan Campbell will determine who ends up playing the most against the Saints in week one at Ford Field.
