Lions' season hinges on Goff-Petzing success
Drew Dinsick tells Trysta Krick why he doesn't view the Lions as Super Bowl contenders, with injuries to key position groups and the addition of Drew Petzing at offensive coordinator.

Nfl preseason begins today, Drew, where the Lions take on the Bengals in Cincinnati.
Detroit was a pretty big disappointment last year after the success that we've expected from them as a group.
They finished nine and eight.
They've moved on from their power back, David Montgomery.
They've added Isaiah Pacheco to replace him.
They added some offensive line help, one of which has already gotten injured.
More than anything, though, Detroit believes this is the best receiver group that Jared Goff has ever had, and the schedule is the easiest in the NFL.
So how do you make sense of this Detroit season?
Yeah.
Complicated feelings.
You laid out all the key points there, and in general, like, with the recipe that we have, this is the type of team that I would like to fade.
I do not think the Lions are realistic contenders for the Super Bowl, and it really comes down to the fact that I don't really believe in the interior offensive line.
I have a very, very low rating on this secondary.
Now, granted, that's because their, you know, all-pro safety duo is gonna be unavailable to start the season.
And I think the Lions, if they're winning games, they're gonna have to do it by scoring thirty-five points.
Now, if they're in a game state that, they can lean on the skill position group, which is the best in football, and if ultimately, the marriage between Jared Goff and Drew Petzing is a successful one, then this Lions team is going to have success against the, poor teams on their schedule, which come pretty regularly throughout the first half especially.
And I think for that reason, it's, it's not really a plus CV play to try to take them on in the win total market under, even though a lot of, you know, a lot of outcomes here.
This is a, another nine-and-eight campaign for these guys.
The Drew Petzing is probably, again, the key to the Lions ultimately succeeding here.
His tenure, particularly at the end in Arizona, I thought was wildly underwhelming.
And, for Jared Goff, he's the type of quarterback that if you are giving him outstanding play design and telling him, you know, where to kind of paint, he is ultimately going to give you a beautiful, piece of art.
But if you are kind of asking him to create out of structure, if you are giving him challenging play calls, then it tends to work out quite poorly.
So, for me, it's going to be all about watching and evaluating that c- that collaboration between Goff and Petzing.
And right now, I'm feeling a little bit pessimistic about it.
So the key for me for the Lions, picking the spots on the schedule where they're up against teams that are gonna take advantage of their weak secondary because in those games, the Lions are gonna have to score forty-two to win, and I'm just not seeing them with that high of a ceiling, with the current offensive coordinator.
