Welcome to the Baseball Insiders.

I'm Adam Weiner, joined as always by fancied MLB insider Robert Murray.

Uh, what is going on?

We are 2 weeks out from the trade deadline.

We've talked about nebulous potential candidates and buyers and sellers over the last couple of weeks.

It's beginning to get a little more serious, but you know what's not helping?

The standings.

It's become downright impossible to know.

Who could be on the move, which teams are ready to deal, and how teams are taking stock of their own chances.

We've talked about the Red Sox where it feels like 30 straight podcasts.

Now, they've won 13 in a row.

Uh, Craig Breslow said he'll be fair and evaluate the totality of the picture instead of maybe buying aggressively like a team that is that hot wood, but also, they ain't selling, Take Sonny.

Great.

Take Aroldis Chapman off the market.

Uh, that'll help us put together the puzzle, but it's not gonna get us all the way there.

Plus, uh, what do the Pirates feel like doing?

How are they balancing their budget?

The twins, what's up with these Mason Miller trade rumors and these young aces getting paid?

Kyle Braddish, Chase Burns is more behind door number 3.

Adam, or Adam and I got to hang out together.

We also got to be with our lovely producers who make the show possible, which was absolutely incredible.

And now it is trade deadline time.

This is the time of year where I get woken up in the middle of the night with calls and texts and you name it, and we break some news, hopefully live on this show, so I could not recommend more tuning into the program here while we are going live.

But we have so much to talk about today.

I got plenty of thoughts.

OK. Let's get going.

I wanna talk about the stuff that actually happened first before we go into the realm of the hypothetical.

Uh, Kyle Braddish and Chase Burns, both extended by the Orioles and Reds on reasonable deals, neither buys out an absurd amount of years, but these are emerging number 2s that are being taken care of.

The O's took care of Shane Baz too.

The Reds already have Hunter Greene locked down, and the Orioles, by the way, the Red Sox in their 13-game winning streak have taken a lot of headlines, deservedly so.

That hasn't been done since 1948.

But what is up with the Orioles and their 7-game winning streak?

And those two teams clash at Fenway Park tonight for a 3-games.

That's what baseball is all about.

So what do those uh extensions mean to you?

Talk me through your reaction to those deals, and are there potentially more extensions in the pipeline that Steven Nesbitt Brewer's tweet and Andrew Fisher's tweet or get a bunch of eyeballs?

Is that about something, nothing?

What's going on here?

OK, I, first of all, let me address the Steven Nesbitt tweet, cause he just said the Brewers are at it again, and what he ended up meaning by that was simply that the Brewers are just a really good baseball team.

And that, like they're exceeding expectations once again.

Like there's, he's not hinting at anything coming down the pipeline here.

Uh, I am not aware of anything that's coming with the Brewers, so I think we need to put that one to bed.

I mean, do I expect the Brewers to be making some moves between now and like the deadline?

For sure.

I think it would be a real surprise if they don't make at least one move, but Steven's tweet, people are reading way too much into that thing.

So here I am wanting to defend him or not defend him, but like clarify what exactly he meant there, but.

All right, let's get back on track here with the extension talk because Kyle Braddish, uh, I was not aware that this one was coming down the pipeline, if I'm being honest, and then they extended 5 years for $90 million super fair deal.

Like this year he's been very solid for them.

Um, they firmly believe, um, that he is a guy who can end up being a frontline guy for them, like a 1 or 21 or 2 type in that rotation.

He's got an ERA like in the 3-2 ranges here, um, and that was a real priority for them, and I think that's one thing we're gonna be seeing between now and even at the start of the offseason is players really wanted to have this certainty going into the lockup, because this one's gonna be.

A real doozy.

We're gonna be hearing a lot of ups and downs, and players are gonna want to have certainty going into that.

So if you're a guy who even is in the short or like in the early part of their careers, or even getting closer to free agency, I would not be surprised if we'd be hearing about plenty of extension talks here.

So I think it would make a ton of sense here for both of these sides, or for like players who are in that position to try to get a deal done and teams to try to engage.

Usually you don't hear much about.

In season extensions cause teams worry about these guys having this a distraction at the plate or on the mound or whatever.

I think this year might be a little bit different there, but it's the uh the other one, Chase Burns, so it's one thing I heard at the All-Star game was just the Reds, they rave about his confidence and how he ends up backing it up, and he's been absolutely um Absolutely incredible for them.

So, uh, he's a long-term asset for them.

They have him, now they have Hunter Greene locked up in that rotation there as well.

So, um, I think that was a super smart move because the longer they waited, Uh, the more that we were, the more that price tag was gonna go up.

And I said the same thing about Jacob Mirowski in my story when I reported that there was no talks between him and the Brewers that are currently going on.

Uh, they have not talked, so there's nothing going on there.

So, again, like, if you're hoping for a miss extension now, that's probably not going to happen, but one that I've been clamoring for is Jordan Walker with the Saint Louis Cardinals.

We just saw them extend JJ Weatherholt.

Uh, could they try to now turn their attention to a guy like Jordan Walker, who's coming off just a terrific All-Star weekend.

So I think that would make some sense.

There's gonna be plenty of others here as well, but I think we're gonna be hearing plenty of this extension talk going forward here.

Now that Burns is in the fold for a little bit longer, is there any chance Green gets moved, or is that not part of Cincinnati's plan at all?

I would, I would be really surprised by that.

Obviously, like, he's got a super affordable contract.

Um, he's, he's somebody who has a ton of upside there.

Uh, once he's like 100% healthy, I think maybe teams will check in there and see, maybe, uh, but I would be really surprised if, if he ends up getting moved.

I think teams are gonna try, the Reds are gonna put a super high asking price on it.

I'm not getting my hopes up there .

Had to press on it, of course, uh, look, I, I gotta talk about the Red Sox here and it's really impossible.

to talk, it's just impossible to talk about that.

Like, they have won 13 baseball games in a row.

They have not done that as a franchise since 1948.

Teams don't do that.

So talking about the Red Sox today, you're like, should the greatest team in the history of baseball add at the trade deadline?

Like, it's just, it's hard to contextualize it properly.

They're 18-2 in their last 20, and that includes 11-0 against the Rays Yankees.

And White Sox, who are, for all their flaws, the three best teams in the American League.

So, they did it against lesser competition, they did it against better competition, they did it against everybody.

And Sonny Gray, a month ago said, this is not a good team right now.

Yesterday, he's like, I was right, they weren't a good team, and now they are, now we are.

So, what do you want?

We're playing much better, you know, we still have work to do.

Breslow is smart.

He is not going to get fooled by a 13-game winning streak into thinking he's supplementing a 130-win team, but he is also not going to neglect the responsibility that he now has.

So, I ask you, this Red Sox team has to get better now that they are in, that they're in the thick of this.

I think any of the teams that are in the American League playoff field can win the American League right now, given how weird the American League is.

So, is that a prime contender?

for a contender to contender trade, like you've talked about on recent shows, the Red Sox, you know, give from the Major League Ro, Jaron Duran strikes me as someone who they could still deal, uh, given their outfield surplus, depending on what Roman Anthony is or isn't for the rest of the year.

What do you feel about the Red Sox, right?

Again, impossible time to ask about them, cause no one has ever been hotter than they are right now.

But how do you feel about them right now and what they could bring to the trade deadline?

Yeah, 2 weeks ago on the show, I was adamant that they were going to be selling, and I would, would not have changed an answer in that moment.

I'm, I was just, I was, I was adamant about it.

And then they just go on this massive winning streak here, and here I am changing my answer.

This is a team, um, Uh, hang on a sec.

Did they just buy?

No, no, no, I saw, uh, there's some, something I'm trying to, to work through here.

Um.

But yeah, anyways, um, as far as the, as far as the Red Sox go, they have to be in a position where they go out and buy, and they had such an opportunity to take advantage of the deadline here where you had Wilson Contreras, Aroldis Chapman, Sonny Gray, like, the names that we've talked about endlessly on the show, and then Contreras comes out at the All-Star game and tells Chris Cottillo that he is not gonna waive his no-trade clause.

Sonny Gray seems like he's probably gonna end up staying in Boston.

Uh, you have Aroldis Chapman, who's going to be signed for next year as well , and he can really help you go out and compete.

So if you're the Red Sox, I think you have to give like the you have to give that roster a boost, and you have to tell them, yeah, we're serious about going out and contending.

And this is something that I never imagined being possible, especially after firing Alex Cora, with the heat that they were getting in Boston .

Specifically Craig Breslow and that ownership group, that was loud, and it was like, it was probably the loudest I think I've ever heard Boston fans be upset, which I think that says a lot there, and it was justified.

But it, I think it says a lot about Chad Tracy, it says a lot about um that just organization overall and that, that current group of players in that clubhouse to overcome all of that.

So, you need to reward them, you need to go out and buy.

And I can't believe I'm saying it, but I, I genuinely stand by it.

Like they've earned the right to be buyers at the deadline, and that also really further complicates who is going to actually be available at the deadline, cause I think everyone across baseball just automatically assumed that those players that were listed before were going to be available, and also to.

I still don't think this is the year that Jaren Durant is going to be, is going to be moved.

I really don't, like, we've, we've seen him in years past, Red Sox have put such a high asking price on him in trade talks, and teams, like they love Jan Durant, but that being said, like, he's not had the same year that he's had in years past, so I think it would be really smart for the Red Sox to hold on to him, not sell lowish on a player of that caliber.

So I think you keep him, you try to get better with him, you try to win with him, and then you reevaluate it in the offseason or maybe even next deadline as well.

My uncle's a Red Sox fan.

He thinks the Red Sox are getting Fernando Tatis Jr. at the trade deadline, so there you go, uh, uncle insiders, that's, that's what we've got going on.

Um, yeah, I, I agree, it's, it's insane they are where they are now based on, uh, where they were 3 weeks ago, 4 weeks ago, but based on the talent in the room, It's not, it's more insane that they were as bad as they were, instead of, I got myself in a knot, but, like, it's not shocking they have found their way to stability, it almost stunned me more when they were 14 under 500 and getting walked off by the Rockies, but here we are at a place where they cannot throw in the towel on this season.

Sorry to the Cubs and Braves who wanted Sonny Gray, it's not going to happen for you.

No, it's definitely, it's, I mean, it could, you never know, maybe they end up giving him a price where they just can't turn it down, but I'd be very surprised.

We've also seen the Red Sox too, where they've come off of a huge sweep of the Yankees, and then all of a sudden they trade Rafael Devers, so like, Craig Breslow is not afraid to do anything, but I also think what this shows too, is that, like Breslow, like, has he deserved some heat for sure, like, yeah, totally.

But that being said, like, I think some of this has been unwarranted.

I've even said this before the Uh, before the stretch here that they've had, where they've, like, he's made some really good moves, whether it's been getting Rangers Suarez in the offseason or getting Sonny Gray, or getting like some of these other moves, they've really worked out for the Red Sox, and also too, like Caleb Durbin was almost run out of Boston after that trade initially.

And he's been much better for them too.

Like, I know giving up Kayla Harrison hurts, but there's been logic behind his moves , a lot of them have worked out, so I think we need to ease off of Craig Breslow a little bit , and like, does it, again, did he deserve some heat?

For sure, but you know what, the guy's done.

He's done a better job than a lot of people have given him credit for, so I think we gotta tip our cap and give credit to Craig Breslow there.

Craig Breslow's tactical work plus Theo Epstein's charisma, and then you just have, you have a guy you can't argue with, but it's, it's Craig Breslow's communication skills that have gotten him.

Yeah, and that, that part's totally justified, like, he's gotta get a lot better at that, but, like, I, I wonder if I'm would end up getting, getting some backlash for defending Craig Breslow, but like , look at his moves, like, reevaluate him, look at the stats, look at the numbers.

Guys, he's, he's done a good job, so, and are you gonna get heat?

Like, probably not right now, not, not.

No, I think is sunshine and rainbows in Boston at the moment, yeah, that's the weird, it's one of the weirdest seasons I can remember, and, like, of course, in this particular.

AL, this is the year, if it was ever gonna happen for there to be just a completely insane top to bottom turnaround in a couple of weeks, but this goes beyond insane turnaround, you know, we are, it took all that work to get to 2 games over 500.

That's how far back they were.

So now, let's incredibly evaluate them.

Let's see if, if they can, again, emerge from the pack at the deadline where we're going to have The the Twins are in the wild card picture, right?

We've had the Yankees, the Yankees apparently had scouts watching Larnok and Ryan Jeffers and, and even I think Joe Ryan was mentioned by Bob Nightingale this weekend in Chicago, uh, Ryan Jeffers to the Yankees, Ryan Jeffers to the Rays, like, we've been talking about this forever.

The, the Twins are like a game out of the wild card.

So, it's not just the Red Sox that are confused.

Using us here.

What, what are we supposed to do with the Minnesota Twins ?

You got scouts checking out the whole roster.

Two teams in the AL East have been putting Ryan Jeffers on their playoff roster since early May, and they're right in the thick of it too.

I, I'm guilty.

I was trying to poach Cody Clemens for the Yankees in rumor pieces for, like, the last two months.

Why would the Twins trade any of these people?

They're, they're right in the thick of things.

No, they totally are.

But that being said, I think they're, they're much further away from actually seriously contending than let's say the Boston Red Sox are.

So if I'm the Twins, I realize where I'm at this year, and like you're definitely ahead of schedule, but if you can end up moving a Jeffries type, if you can move a Joe Ryan type, and you can get, I don't know, let's say $1.50 like when you could expect $1 in return, I think that's something where You try to take advantage of that and really try to end up adding for your future there.

So, I think that front office is in a really good position here, where they can, they can be patient, they can try to extract as much value as you can, cause there's gonna be teams that are going to be in that.

Uh, in that bubble there, where they're teetering between, um, buying and selling, and the twins here feel like a team that's on the, on the edge there, that ends up trying to take advantage of that.

So, you could get an absolute haul for a guy like Joe Ryan.

I think he'd be a terrific fit in let's say like Chicago.

I think either both of those teams, I think Atlanta would make a lot of sense there too.

Uh, there's a bunch of different teams that would make sense for Joe Ryan.

So, um, I think that front office is going to be plenty busy in fielding calls for him.

Um, and then Jeffers too, that you mentioned the two obvious fits there for sure.

Uh, I also think San Diego makes a bunch of sense for a guy like Jeffers cause they've been looking for a catcher there.

And can, I'll honestly say I've not heard that fit behind the scenes, but I'm just saying cause like, I think the Padres would love to have a a catcher, uh, for this year and then also going forward.

I think Jefferson would make a lot of sense for them.

So, um, but yeah, he's, there's gonna be plenty popular.

I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up moving at least maybe one of them, um , but I think a lot of what is going to depend on what the twins do is just gonna ultimately figure out how they do over the like the next 10 to 14 days, and then they go from there.

But it's uh They, they should absolutely try to be taken advantage of this here for sure, I think.

Looking at that catching market, I'm sort of looking at Shay Langgoliers based on, there's a little bit of that John Hayman intel saying there may not be, the extension talks might not be going so rosy between the A's organization and Langoliers, uh, and looking at, you know, Hunter Goodman is someone who seems to be a part of the Rockies core, Jeffers, this situation's confusing, like, do you think any of those three ultimately move this deadline?

I would be, I would be really surprised if they move Langeliers in with the A's, and he's a guy that you build around, you don't trade, cause they've been, they've prioritized extending all of these, um, these young players, where they obviously didn't get Kurtz done, uh, but Langgoliers would be a guy that they should absolutely build around.

It's very hard to find a player of that caliber, um, and I think you, you do everything you can to keep him long term.

You don't even entertain trading him, so.

If I'm the A's, I don't move Langliers.

Goodman, I mean, what a season he's had, by the way, holy.

Like he's a very strong candidate for another Silver Slugger Award.

So good job by Hunter Goodman there, um, but I, I don't think, I don't think he'll be on the move.

I think of those guys, I think Jeffers has the best, best chance to go and Again, I could not be more adamant.

Langgoliers should not even be a trade candidate for the A's, no way, no how.

As Pedro Martinez says, 3 more ding dong Johnsons for Hunter Goodman yesterday.

Hunter Goodman gets the award for the All-Star Game media participant who did the best job of deflecting trade.

Deadline questions.

He sat there for, like, 40 minutes and everyone was like, what about my team and you, that might be fun, and he was just like, I played for the Colorado Rockies, I haven't talked to them.

I'm still playing for the Colorado Rockies, please stop asking me these questions.

So, um, good job.

No, extremely, it's, it's like it's a pressing question for a lot of these guys too, and Luis Luis Arrayz even kind of had the same demeanor, same kind of talk there, like he wants to play second base, whether it's with the Giants or whether it's with a different team, but he really likes it in San Francisco, and working with Ron Washington and that entire organizations, I think really.

Uh, change the narrative surrounding him, cause obviously the defensive miscues are just not, he was, he wasn't very good defensively previously.

Let's just, I think that's putting it nicely.

Now we're talking about him being a plus defender, so, uh, Luis Arra is another guy to watch, but Um, he'll be plenty popular.

I think he's got a much better chance of going somewhere else, rather than a guy like Hunter Goodman for sure.

Mason Miller got those questions at the All-Star game as well, and, and I think, look, people are going nuts this week.

The social media topic du jour was just talking about a Mason Miller trade.

Oh, it's actually reasonable, oh, maybe Preller would pivot, you know, one year.

You're in the Mason Miller era, what's your takeaway on that just cause he has the potential to dominate the trade deadline discourse.

He also feels like a completely insane trade candidate to me.

So, where are you at on Mason Miller moving?

Again , arrived in San Diego for Leo DeVries less than one year ago and we're already trying to send him to a new locale.

Yeah, so, OK, I, I wanna make sure I get this across properly, is AJ Preller listens on everything, like he will listen on any scenario, he is a guy that comes up with as unique of any scenarios as any executive in baseball does.

But that being said, like Mason Miller was a prime target for him last year, like he, he wanted him, he's wanted him in years past, and he got him, gave up Louis Leu DeVries, one of the best prospects in baseball.

Miller has been incredible in San Diego.

He's he's even exceeded their already high expectations there, and now we're talking about possibly trading him out of San Diego, even when he's controllable.

That doesn't pass the smell test to me.

It really, I would, I'm skeptical that he's going to be moved.

I, could I be wrong?

For sure, but that does not feel like an AJ Prowler thing, and we've seen how we, like I've seen different scenarios float around on Twitter, where they could attach a guy like Xanderw Bogart's contract to move off of that contract, and then part with Miller in that deal.

I just, I don't see it.

I, I could be wrong again, but that just doesn't feel like an AJ Prowler thing to me.

So I'm, I'm sticking to my guns there, and I, I don't think he's going to be moved, but do I think teams are going to be checking in here?

Oh, apps are freaking lutely for sure, like with Aroldis Chapman probably not getting traded, you also have like a very limited relief market as a whole.

Are the Mets going to trade Luke Weaver , are they gonna hold on to him cause he's in the first year of a two year contract.

I, we'll, we'll see.

Preller's gonna get a lot of phone calls, but again, I am skeptical that Mason Miller is going to be on the move, like, again, but Preller's proven me wrong before, but I, I just, I don't see him doing it here.

Yeah, the Mets should trade Luke Weaver, by the way, just on that one, yeah.

No, they absolutely should be trading.

They're gonna be getting an absolute boatload of interest considering just the overall dominance that he's had this season, and he's been one of the very few Mets moves this offseason that's actually, like, worked out, so good job by by Luke Weaver there.

Yeah, like the comments are saying, uh, get off of Breslow, pile on Stearns, hey, I get it.

I'll we'll pile on Stearns a little bit, we'll probably do a full Mets episode later in the week or maybe next week, uh Lindore evaluating that situation.

Um.

I got my eyes on the Astros too.

They sent Lance McCullers Junior to the Brewers' pitching lab and cleared a lot of money doing it.

Are there tricks up Houston's sleeve, uh, cause you've got a Triple Crown season for Yordan Alvarez, and again, you get into the playoff picture in the AL, you can make the World Series.

That's just how it goes.

So, what do you think the Astros are getting cagey about over there?

Yeah, OK, so this move, this one, it it hits close to home because I found out about this while I was flying home, and I did not have Wi Fi, so I was not able to tweet it.

So that was a kind of a huge kick to the gonads, but, but anyways here, um, so, Lance McCullers, obviously the headliner here going, uh, going to the Brewers, but they were floating McCullers in some scenarios here with other teams as well.

But in order to like take on McCullers' bunny, uh, and just his contract overall, um, the reward was getting a guy like Colton Gordon, and Gordon was somebody who Um, I think teams were definitely intrigued by, and you get like, Colton Gordon is not gonna end up being a guy that's gonna draw a bunch of headlines, obviously, but I would not be surprised if the Brewers turning, turned him into something that's relatively good here.

They have a way of maximizing a bunch of pitchers here.

Um, and I think he's one to watch.

I think McCullers, believe he's gonna be pitching out of the bullpen initially for the Brewers, I believe that's right.

So, they're, um, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up getting good value out of both of those guys, and all it cost them was what, the Prince Fielder's son, who was the guy that was undrafted.

I mean, I think that's a really smart move by the Brewers overall.

It's nice to see them adding a little bit of payroll, but the Brewers, in my eyes, cannot be done here.

They have to go out and get An actual like legitimate starting pitcher, they need to possibly get a bat, add some slug to that lineup.

As far as the Astros go.

I mean, it's only what, 2.5 million, give or take, they freed up on this, on this deal.

Um, I wouldn't be surprised if we see them being attached to some of these bigger names, whether, obviously we've seen him connected to Tarek Scoble.

I don't know if Detroit would be in a hurry to move him there.

Um, but also, like, I think the Astros are going to be in a position where they can try to be aggressive, uh, cause this, that division and just the American League as a whole is very winnable.

So I wouldn't be surprised if we hear them being pretty.

Strong buyers of the deadline, but this will be the 1st, 1st move for both of these teams, and I expect more action after this one for sure.

I'm gonna go to the comments to make sure we get this before we sign off.

Maple Young wants to know when the Jays' potential to sell, do they have stuff worth moving?

I saw Jays fans saying goodbye to Kevin Gosman this weekend.

That feels a little extreme, but what's your read on the Jays, who are now in last place in the AL East, which apparently means nothing, cause that's been the Red Sox and the Orioles too, and they're both in the playoff picture right outside it.

Yeah, I still expect the Jays to be buying, I really do.

Uh, you're coming off of a World Series appearance and you almost win it.

Obviously this season has not gone according to plan by any means, uh, but the impression that I have is that they're gonna be looking for pitching, specifically starting pitching.

So I expect them to be looking in that market, be active in that market for sure .

Um, but I, is this the kind of season where you expect them, or should they go all in?

No, I think they need to be real.

I think they need to make some sort of moves, but not make that big splash where you add a, a, a player who's on an expiring contract, you end up getting eliminated early in the postseason, and then you lose that player in free agency.

If you're the, if you're the Jays, I think they should.

Uh, go after somebody who's controllable.

At least that's, that's my own opinion.

I don't know if that's the, if the Jays are gonna be actually prioritizing that, but that's something that I would do there.

But I do expect them to be in pitching for sure.

And quick one on the Pirates, cause Bob Nightingale said they wanna be aggressive at the deadline but won't add salary.

Then there was some pushback there on that today.

Uh, this is a pro-Pirates podcast, #ProPirates podcast.

Any indications on your end of what they intend to do, how aggressive they intend to be, and whether there are restrictions on that aggression?

I don't know yet on any restrictions, if I'm being honest, but that being said, as far as the Pirates go, they will, they will be in a position to buy at the deadline, and could they get creative and And trying to add to that roster, yeah, I think that could end up being something for sure, like, and I, I reported the other week that there's gonna be a bunch of teams that try like a buyer for buyer trade.

I, I wonder if the Pirates could end up doing something like that, where they trade for one strength to improve a weakness.

I think that would make a lot of sense for them, um, but do I expect them to be buying?

For sure.

Whether it's bat, bullpen, or maybe even catcher, I don't know, but I think those positions all make sense for them for sure.
