Padres 'have enough' to secure NL Wild Card spot
CC Sabathia and Ahmed Fareed review where the Astros and Padres stand in the post-trade deadline landscape, where Houston was comfortable "standing pat" and San Diego made moves that brought "life" to the clubhouse.

Astros were six games back in the West in June, now atop the division by a game.
Rangers in that third wild card spot right now.
NL in the wild card, it's a crazy race.
Padres in the mix, a game and a half back of the Phillies, and Diamondbacks, both those teams ahead of them, did win already on this Sunday.
They can get it back to a game if they win here tonight.
Active at the trade deadline, CC.
AJ Preller has been doing that for years now, made some trades.
Casey Mize, Robbie Ray, saw him.
Does this team deserve that?
Are, are they good enough to trade some of the future for the present?
Yeah, I think so.
I mean, I think any time you get a chance to, to get in the playoffs, you have to take it, right?
I mean, whether it's wild card or winning division.
So yeah, I mean, I think the, the Padres know as an organization, as a fan base, as a team, that they're gonna do something.
AJ Preller's gonna do something at the, at the trade deadline every year.
And it brings life into your club when you, when you can bring some new guys in.
So trading for Casey Mize and getting Robbie Ray they hope will help, you know, put them over the top, but it definitely helps in the clubhouse.
And with all the injuries they've had with the starting rotation, Joe Musgrove maybe coming back here, did have a rehab start today, but they needed some starting pitching.
On the other side, what about the Houston Astros?
Atop that division, but were not all that aggressive.
Dalton Barshaw is the only player they added.
They thought maybe they'd had some starting pitching.
They didn't.
Was that a mistake?
No, I don't think so.
I mean, I think they're at the top of this division, right?
I think that the division is dictating the moves that they make, right?
The Mariners and the Rangers, everybody picked to, to win the division at the beginning of the season.
They haven't ran away with it.
And the Astros are standing pat with the team that they have.
I mean, they have some good young stars.
They're getting some pitching back.
Josh Hader's been great.
So you know, it, it's, it's really them kinda letting the division dictate whether they're gonna make moves or not.
Yeah.
Both these teams should be in the mix when you look at some of the star power they have.
On the offensive side you have Yordan lvarez and the Triple Crown conversation.
We'll get to him in a second.
But how about Fernando Tatis?
Not many people would believe this, but he leads all of Major League Baseball over Yordan lvarez in hard-hit balls that's 95 miles an hour or more.
Does that surprise you?
This is, the stat surprising me, right?
Yes.
When you hear that, and all we talked about at the beginning of the season that he hadn't had a homer yet and, you know, he needs to step up for this offense.
But when he's hitting the ball that hard on the barrel consistently, good things are gonna happen for you.
Yeah, I mean, he wasn't getting the results early on, but he has carried this offense at times.
So do, do they have enough here?
Manny Machado, the way he's playing, Fernando Tatis on the offensive side, Merrill heating up.
Yeah, they do.
I mean, especially if Jackson Merrill's gonna step up and, and play the way he's played the last 20 games, you know?
You said he's hitting 375 the last 20 games.
Yeah.
With those two, with those three, with that trio, yeah, that should be enough to get it done, for sure.
Mize can pitch like he did in Detroit.
