Perloff: Cousins going to be better than you think
Andrew Perloff believes Kirk Cousins may keep Fernando Mendoza on the sidelines longer than people think.
Video Transcript
My first warm take today is about Kirk Cousins.
Now, Kirk Cousins is named the starter in Las Vegas.
I think everyone's waiting for him to lose a few games and, and yield the floor to Fernando Mendoza.
I gotta tell you right now, Kirk Cousin is gonna be better than you think.
I'm gonna call it commitment to competence in Vegas- with the Raiders.
No commitment to excellence, but competence.
Because he's very, very good in Clint Kubiak's offense.
They were together in Minnesota.
Every year they were together, Cousins had a passer rating over 100.
They run this wide zone run game and play action, Paul, and all quarterbacks are better under play action, especially if you can sell the run.
Cousins knows what he's doing.
Listen, he's like me.
He had no athleticism when he was young.
He has none now.
It does not matter.
He knows where to go with the ball.
He's gonna throw the ball to Brock Bowers over the middle, and Kubiak makes receivers good.
It's not the other way around.
The offense will create a good receiver, even though there's none on the depth chart right now.
Just wait.
This passing offense is gonna look way better than we think it is.
Will they win a lot of games?
Maybe not, but I think they are gonna have a, a higher level than we thought with Kirk Cousins.
Because they've been bad the last few years.
They're gonna be very pleased with just sort of competence quarterback play.
A couple things.
Yeah.
You crushed that warm take.
That may go in the warm take hall of fame.
It had comedy.
It had, you know, a little against the grain in it.
I think this is a very interesting take by you because if Cousins plays well- Yeah and they win a couple of those games they're not expected to win, and somehow they're four and three at the halfway point, you can't bench him.
And now Mendoza, no fault of his own- Yeah is just sitting and sitting and sitting.
But, you know, there'd be pressure to not play a guy.
You know, I always said that week eight game against the Jets- Right that's the target game.
If somehow you beat the Rams or beat the Bills or beat them both, you're not sitting anybody.
Yeah, I mean, I think the, the high end would be Alex Smith in Kansas City- Yes right before Patrick Mahomes got there.
That's possible.
It- If they got 10 wins, that'd be like winning the Super Bowl.
It's possible from the standpoint of Alex Smith is similar to Kirk Cousins in good, not great, but I don't know if the supporting cast with the Raiders will support Cousins to that level.
Oh, just because they've been terrible for 20 years?
Yeah, because they've been terrible for 20 years
