All right, how about Alex Fitzpatrick?
Up here at 18, trying to finish with a birdie.
And does.
Dynamic between those two, interesting, Steve.
Much different personalities.
JJ Spaun trying to keep it going.
And he does.
Saw him earlier today working on the practice putting green diligently on this part of his game.
All right, back out to the fifth.
In the rough again, Scotty.
And doing his best to try to muscle a seven iron to the green, but this is not gonna get there.
Just on these longer par fours, it is really tough to get it to the green from the rough.
Fitzpatrick back at the fifth in the fairway.
It's an eight iron, bringing it down.
Goes so hard.
Go.
Needs to go.
Go.
Got it to go.
All right.
Was asking for it.
Yeah, he was.
He was begging a little bit there.
Ended up in a great spot to putt from.
In the bunker here at five, Scotty.
On the upslope there.
Handled it pretty easily.
Turned out to be a heck of a shot in here for Fitzpatrick.
Good one, Matt.
And a birdie.
Oh, my gosh.
That one that way.
What a stretch of holes this has been.
And catching the hole.
Well, take a look at Scheffler and all that he's done.
There's a short miss at three earlier.
That one missed the hole.
Now this one a four, Kurt.
Just a little longer, but a violent lip out there, so very disappointed in that.
Yeah, he couldn't believe that one didn't fall.
And then moments ago at the fifth.
He said he misread it, so he didn't move left like he thought.
He's This putt he has left now at the par three is about that length right there.
He, he made six bogeys all week last week in Memphis.
He's already made three.
Fleetwood here at seven, coming across.
Boy, good-looking stroke right there.
Gotta drive you crazy.
Yeah, where do you aim?
Clark's second at the last.
Boy, a driving exhibition out of this guy today.
Ooh.
He missed one fairway, and that's one of the reasons why he's playing the round he is.
He's able to attack.
Up to 18.
Brilliant shot in here for Clark, and trying to match Woodland.
He does.
How about the back nine for him?
How about that?
5 under 30, having, finishing the day with three in a row.
Meanwhile- Scotty at seven Really good lie here, 132.
Crowds are murmuring like they don't like it.
That's why.
Nothing has been easy.
What a crazy game this is.
Now, this is a pretty simple shot here for him off an upslope and a good lie.
Cut it a little too much, Paul.
Thank goodness for spin.
Another one of those, though, Kurt.
Yep.
13 tee with Rory.
Another fabulous par three here at Bellerive.
193 today.
Wind off the right, flag located in the bowl in the back right.
Really gotta hit that bowl.
This one's left.
Good shot.
Oh, it's getting better and better all the time.
That's what happens when you catch that bowl.
Through seven holes, it is a scorecard that you don't see often for this man.
Let him have it.
If ever.
64 today, so take a look at some of the highlights from that round.
After Gary Woodland posted the 64, Clark went to work on the back nine.
Beautiful there.
That was 25-footer at 13.
We've seen JJ Spaun go out and shoot 30 on the front nine today, and Clark doing that here on the back nine from downtown at 16.
You know, there won't be a ton of birdies at 16.
Let's see if McIlroy learned something.
Got a great read from him.
Oh, yeah.
So McIlroy gets to three under par.
What a weird game.
You said it, Kurt.
McIlroy last week, now look at him.
Scheffler last week, now look at him.
Matt Fitzpatrick, 604 yards.
He's going for it here.
Driving a three wood.
Yep.
Up the center of the screen.
Needs a big kick.
Even through that soft soil, it's up on the green.
What a shot.
604, no problem.
Two shots, eagle putt upcoming for Matt.
Matt Fitzpatrick hit a couple of really nice shots at this par five, setting up an eagle try, Smiley.
A very makeable downhill right to left.
A little too much left.
He's hit it really nice today, Steve.
You know, he's about to get it to 3 under par, but there's a couple other ones that he could've made it and easily been 4 or 5 under.
Mm-hmm.
All right, drop you back to Fitzpatrick now, his approach.
Trying to dial in a pitching wedge.
Looks good from my eye.
Here it comes.
Using it.
Caught a lot more of that slope Fitzpatrick now trying to read this to get it to four.
Oh yeah, walked it in.
Back to Rory at 15.
156 gap wedge for Rory.
He can hit this one.
Oh.
Just plopping it right down there close to the cup.
McIlroy, what a look here.
Yeah, just four and a half feet.
That's why he's the favorite.
He's now four under par.
Playing very nicely.
Bobby Mac, who nearly won this last year.
Remember coming down the stretch, it was Scotty who caught him and passed him, that great chip in at 17.
Little uphill, little bit slow.
Oh yeah.
Oh.
Just enough.
Now McIlroy, see if he can reach this green in two.
Xander has laid up.
This is a five wood.
A great line.
Yeah, that hole location is on the right side.
633 yards, no problem.
Beauty.
An eagle putt upcoming to tie for the lead.
In this first cut.
Sitting up a little bit.
Tons of spin on this golf ball.
Just left.
That's a little more Scottie-like it.
Good speed.
That should be his fifth birdie of the day, with no bogeys on the card.
At the 15, JJ's ball did end up in the bunker.
Rolled through the fairway.
Looks like a good lie.
I think he likes it.
And he should .
What a shot.
Hey, is there a rake over there?
Center cut for Scotty.
Birdie number two on the day.
Three over par.
12 of the 50 players are over par, including the favorite coming into the week.
JJ Spaun for a share of the lead.
Out of the bunker off the tee at 15, and there's a new man at six under par joining Gary Woodland and Wyndham Clark.
Let's see what Gutterup does.
Just push fade one right at it.
He said, "Forget about that ridge."
Yeah.
"I'm going right at the flag."
Tee at the last, McIlroy.
Seems to have figured out the tee ball, I think, with this driver, Terry.
305 to the fairway over those bunkers on the left.
It's okay.
It's okay.
It started on a good line.
Maybe turning too much.
No.
No.
Absolutely destroyed up that left side.
Boy, on a pretty line.
Good distance, too.
So Rory with a chance to make a putt and share the lead at six under.
Got it, to finish up.
Pure roll on that ball.
Brett Faxon will be happy.
Share the lead.
Gutterup.
He sets up open to every shot.
It's sometimes it That's really well played there.
But with Gutterup, you can't just go because he's wide open, he's gonna play a cut.
He could play a cut, he could play a draw.
Saw the approach for Gutterup.
He's within one.
It looks, this looks like the proper way.
Yeah, with the spin.
Oh, yeah.
That was it.
Yeah.
At the 15th, Chris Gutterup has a chance to get to six.
And does.
Scheffler back at 14.
Yes.
Hey, chipping away at it.
Outside of 21 feet for par, Gutterup.
Still slow, right to left.
He got that one there.
Just a two putt.
He's expecting a little hurt.
This is a seven iron.
Not easy to get it all the way back there.
Oh, he went after it.
An aggressive two.
On a good line, I think.
All over it.
Oh, yeah, what a shot.
One of the best we've seen here in the last hour, hour and a half.
Yeah, the right side, this is the highest point of the green, so quick heading down the hill.
Not a ton of break.
Yep.
Pure roll.
That line just right end over end.
Excellent opening round for Fitzpa-
