Seahawks’ “dark side” defense propels Seattle to Super Bowl LX win over Patriots
Seattle's dominant defense set the tone from start to finish, carrying the Seahawks to a Super Bowl LX victory and the second championship in franchise history.

So we're here at Levi's Stadium, Super Bowl 60 just wrapped up.
The Seahawks won 29 to 13.
JB, my esteemed colleague and columnist for USA Today, just give me your initial reaction from the game.
How many times have we heard defense wins championships, right?
Yes.
And the, the, the score was a lot closer than the actual game was- Mm-hmm ... because Seattle's defense, which has been the best or one of the best, you can go by a couple different measures, all season, they really proved their worth tonight, and they just shut down the Patriots' offense.
And it was never really- Yeah ... a game once they got the lead, and the, the, the things started flowing where the Patriots couldn't barely get a first down.
Yeah, and I mean, I know Kenneth Walker got MVP, but you really could award that entire defense the MVP, especially the defensive line.
They had, Drake May under siege the entire game, six sacks.
He never looked comfortable, and ironically, I thought it was Drake May, the one that looked like they were seeing ghosts, because he threw an ill-advised interception to Love.
Then he had a- another fumble interception that turned out to be a pick six.
I mean, he really never looked comfortable throughout the game, and you have to give credit to the Seahawks' Darkside defense.
They lived up to that game, and they're right up there, in my opinion, with the Legion of Boom, because they have a Super Bowl title just like the Legion of Boom, and so this is one of the great defenses in the NFL that we've seen.
Yeah, and you know, that's interesting that you mention that, Tyler, because there have been some signature defenses that kind of put their mark on Super Bowls.
You can talk about the Ravens defense.
You can talk about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense.
You can go way back to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Steel Curtain defense, Dallas doing You know, a lot of them.
Yeah.
And so the- I think the thing that will separate this defense in time, if it continues, is if they could do it again and do it some more, more than for just one season.
But for one season, one game, you know, you put them there.
Yeah.
But I want to circle back to what you said about the MVP thing, because, you're right.
There were so many players that had impact plays for the Seahawks defense, that it was tough to just pick one guy.
Yeah.
Now, Kenneth Walker, they had to have him, too, because he had- Yeah ... over 150 yards from scrimmage.
Mm-hmm.
And he kept that offense moving, and, hey, it, it didn't end in touchdowns early.
Mm-hmm.
It was field goals, but they needed that essential part.
And the, the other guy who you could talk about as an MVP candidate, Devin Wethers- Witherspoon.
Yes, yes.
And all those blitzes made a huge difference.
So over in the Seahawks locker room, they were talking about how Mike McDonald schemed that and maybe even adjusted as the game went on- Mm-hmm ... to blitz him more.
They found a weakness, and they exploited it- Yeah ... with the blitzes.
Yeah, and th- that front four, they got pressure constantly, and like you said, Witherspoon, I thought that was a, a sack fumble that he had.
They ruled it a interception, but he was a, a man possessed.
I thought he was probably maybe second in the MVP voting.
Somebody had to win.
If it were up to me, I would have gave it to the entire defense, 'cause that defense dominated the game entirely.
Okay, so if it's up to you, you're gonna break the rules.
Yeah, I'm gonna break the rules.
That's what he said- I'm gonna break the rules.

Anyway, hey, looks like the Seahawks made their own rules tonight.
