With the 2026 off-season program hitting a wall, let's take a look at the six biggest, most landscape-shifting trades that have been executed by the San Francisco 49ers franchise since twenty twenty and evaluate their impact.
Starting off with trading away defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, in return received a twenty twenty first-round pick, the number thirteenth overall pick.
One of the most scrutinized, heavily debated transactions of the Shanahan era is this one.
Coming off of a Super Bowl app- appearance, the front office faced a brutal salary cap crunch and elected to trade away All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
The 49ers pivoted by signing Arik Armstead for a cheaper deal and using that number thirteen overall selection to find Buckner's direct replacement, Javon Kinlaw.
The calculus collapsed.
Meanwhile, Buckner immediately earned first team All-Pro honors in Indianapolis and rattled off multiple Pro Bowl campaigns.

In twenty twenty two was the Christian McCaffrey trade.
They traded away a second, third, fourth, and fifth round pick for Christian McCaffrey, who of course, is fully locked in to serve as the anchor of the backfield once again in twenty twenty six after winning Comeback of the Year Player and in another year, Offensive Player of the Year.
And of course, in twenty twenty three, the Chase Young rental experiment where they traded around-- traded a twenty twenty-four third round compensor- sorry, compensatory pick for defensive end Trey Young, which had mixed results.
And finally, in twenty twenty six, they restructured the interior front for Osa Odighizuwa, trading away a third round pick, the number ninety-two pick overall for Odighizuwa, who's promising in prime anchor position for the twenty twenty six season.
