What's up, everybody?
It's Evan Winter with A to Z Sports, and I wanna talk with y'all just real quick about a sneaky detail I found in Baker Mayfield's contract.
According to Over The Cap, if Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers have not reached a new deal by February twentieth, '27, then that's six days after the Super Bowl, by the way, then Mayfield's contract will officially expire.
Why is this a big deal?
Well, if that happens, the Buccaneers are gonna have to eat more than thirty million dollars in dead cap.
That's not good, especially for a team that's currently projected to have around thirty-nine million dollars in cap space next year.
Additionally, this takes the franchise tag and the transition tag completely off the table if it does happen.
I mean, th-there's no way, and that's because right now, for quarterbacks, the franchise tag next year is projected to be around fifty million dollars.
The transition tag is projected to be around forty-three million dollars.
So using simple math, that means Baker Mayfield could cost anywhere between seventy-three to eighty million dollars against the cap by himself.
That's simply unsustainable.
That's not how good NFL franchises are ran in terms of front office.
So will this push the Buccaneers timeline up?
We'll just have to wait and see
