Grant Cohn and Brandon Deutsch discuss whether San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will win the MVP award this year.
Video Transcript
I'm just, I'm just playing.
All right, I got a question.
Kyle Shanahan.
Who knows?
Do you think, do you think Brock Purdy will be an MVP candidate this year?
I mean, obviously you'd have to stay healthy, but Mike Evans on the team, we saw what Devonte Adams did for the Rams and Matthew Stafford.
Like they just completely.
You know, goosed up his numbers.
Like, let's, let's throw the ball from the 2 yard line 40 times this year, and all of a sudden he's an MVP.
I'm sure the Niners looking at like, oh shit, we could do that.
Why don't we get Mike Evans and throw him the ball from the 2 yard line?
That's an easy throw, and it's, I mean, Mike Evans might even be better at that than Devonte or just as good.
So what do you think, man?
If he stays healthy, you think, well, I'm not gonna say if he stays healthy.
Do you think he'll be an MVP candidate this year?
Shocking because I know people deem me a Brock Purdy hater, but I do think he'll be an MVP candidate this year if Mike Evans stays healthy.
It's a big if, like, if Mike Evans stays healthy, like, and Pierce Hall can be healthy, he should have about 40 to 45 combined touchdowns, rushing and passing.
Now, he'll throw pace for it last year, right?
I mean, he had 20 touchdown passes in 9 starts last year.
Yeah, yeah, and he'll throw about 10, he'll he'll throw 15 interceptions or close to it, but He'll be first in QBR if those guys stay healthy, and if McCaffrey stays healthy, he'll be, like, 1st in QBR and 45 touchdowns, they'll probably have 12 wins.
Now, they won't win a Super Bowl, but could he win the MVP?
Absolutely.
I think there's there's an avenue for that.
I mean, heat pads against these bad defenses, he had what, 66 touchdowns against the Bears, and then he had 0 against the Seahawks the following week, so, like, I, I don't know, that's if he's gonna do it again.
They have a ton of bad teams on their schedule that they're gonna just demolish and Brock Purdy's stat pad for 4 or 5 touchdowns with Mike Evans, but the Rams did that with Stafford, so I'm like, I, I don't deny that, I don't deny that stat padding, I don't hate on it, but yeah, I think there's an avenue he can win MVP.
I do.
I think so much depends on Mike Evans for this question, because I mean, obviously, Christian McCaffrey is a great receiver, and probably will continue to be one unless he misses time.
Um, but I think for Kitttle, I mean, excuse me, damn it, for Brock, a big key for him has been Kittel.
I mean, Kittel's the best, or he was, best tight end in the league.
And when Brock targeted him last year, quarterback rating of 138, I think George has always had a quarterback rating.
I mean, when targeted, that's extremely high.
Here are my prize picks for the 49ers 2026 season.
Brock Purdy, 25.5 passing touchdowns, more or less.
I'm gonna say less.
Christian McCaffrey, 974.5 rushing yards, more or less.
I'm gonna say less.
Mike Evans, 924.5 receiving yards, more or less.
Hm, that's a tough one.
I'm going with less.

Again, that's code HMA prize picks, it's good to be right.
And the thing about George last year, he missed a bunch of games at the beginning of the season because he tore his hamstring, and that coincided with Purdy's absence.
So when Purdy came back, Kittle was back.
And I mean, he's the, he's the go to guy in the red zone.
He's, he's the he's the safety blanket.
He's just always a good option.
And is he gonna be there week one?
Is he gonna be there week 6?
Is he gonna be what he used to be?
I don't know.
So, if, if there's no Kittle out there, and it's, And it's just Mike Evans and Christian McCaffrey.
I don't know.
Maybe, maybe he won't be an MVP candidate.
It's gonna be interesting to see what Brock looks like without his Hall of Famers around.
I mean, what if Kittle's on the decline?
What if McCaffrey, we already saw him without McCaffrey, it wasn't great.
That's all I'm saying.
A lot depends on my game.
And Ricky, like the, the connection between Brock and Ricky kind of sucks.
Last year, when, when Ricky was targeted, the Niners quarterback rating was 68.
I don't know.
He hasn't practiced that much.
It's hard to get on the same page with him, he's hurt a lot.
It's hard to throw over the middle of the field to a guy who's 175 pounds.
When you're 6 ft tall, and he's 6 ft tall.
