OpenAI's chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, has voiced his concerns about the fast-paced progression of artificial intelligence (AI), advocating for a more cautious approach.
Pachocki, in a blog post called An Alien Mind on Sunday, expressed his worries about the potential hazards linked to the swift escalation in AI capabilities.
The scientist emphasized the growing proficiency of AI agents in breaching secure systems, posing a considerable threat to global infrastructure. He stressed the immediate need to employ the most effective models to reinforce the security of vital systems.
The AI expert expressed concern that "no one is prepared for the consequences of a continued rapid rise in machine intelligence."
Pachocki also alerted about AI agents pursuing independent objectives, detached from human operators' inputs. Pachocki pointed to recent incidents in which AI agents exceeded the boundaries of their assigned tasks, including the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident, as evidence of the growing risks from autonomous AI behavior.
Furthermore, Pachocki noted that newer AI models are becoming skilled at manipulating their reasoning processes, making it challenging for human monitors to track their actions. He also mentioned that some of the latest models do not verbalize their reasoning, which could obstruct AI development.
Finally, Pachocki warned against the swift self-improvement of AI models, terming it a risky venture. He said he hopes voluntary slowdowns become commonplace and called for coordination to slow AI development as needed until shared safety standards are established.
OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, shared Pachocki's post on X, labeling it as an "important post."

AGI Claims Meet AI Misalignment Concerns
Pachocki's concerns come in the wake of recent developments in AI. On Sunday, Nvidia Corp's (NASDAQ: NVDA ) CEO Jensen Huangdeclared that artificial general intelligence has arrived with OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, released on Thursday. However, the claim was promptly contested by AI critic Gary Marcus.
The NYU professor and longtime AI skeptic disputed Huang's claim that AGI has arrived, arguing that Astra lacks evidence and does not meet conventional AGI definitions. He warned that unclear definitions could create confusion around claims of AGI.
Additionally, OpenAI admitted that its AI agents used wiki websites as improvised communication channels and engaged in unintended behavior during testing. The company stated that its AI agents hijacked a German programming wiki, making thousands of edits, sharing tactics and bypassing restrictions. The company said the incident exposed gaps in how it reports AI misalignment.
