This prize was established through gifts from the family and friends of Chandler T. White, Dartmouth Class of 1916. The income is to be used annually for an award to be made to one or more undergraduate chemistry students in recognition of outstanding performance in an independent research project. The winner's name is also inscribed on a plaque displayed in the Marx Lounge of Burke Laboratory.
Chandler T. White taught and studied at M.I.T. following his graduation from Dartmouth. In the early 1920's, he joined the General Aniline and Film Corporation (which changed its name to GAF, Inc., in 1968), retiring in 1959 as its vice president. He died in 1982 at the age of 88.
