Thank you for attending the 2026 Special Education Family Conference -  Stronger Together: Connecting Families & Schools . This no-cost, in-person event is hosted by Fairfax County Public Schools in collaboration with a host of internal and external community partners. Families and community members had the opportunity to hear a  keynote address from internationally renowned educator and advocate, Dr. Shelley Moore. Following lunch, conference attendees connected with resources and community organizations available in the exhibitor hall , the student showcase , and participate in breakout sessions

Shelley Moore

Keynote Session: Dr. Shelley Moore

Time: 9-11 a.m Location: Auditorium

Based in British Columbia, Canada, Dr. Shelley Moore is a highly sought-after inclusive education researcher, teacher, consultant and storyteller. She has worked with school districts and community organizations around the world. Her research explores how to support teachers to design for all learners in grade level academic classrooms that include students with intellectual disabilities using strength based and responsive approaches. Shelley completed her undergraduate degree in Special Education at the University of Alberta, her Masters at Simon Fraser University, and her Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia. 

During the Special Education Family Conference, Dr. Moore facilitated the keynote address titled  The Evolution of Inclusion . She will shared how inclusion has evolved as we better understand diversity and identity. She led participants to reflect on their own experiences and consider simple, meaningful next steps for advocacy and action.

  • 2E: What I Wish Teachers Knew About Being Neurodivergent

    This session was developed by an autistic high school student who is also labeled as "gifted" and her mom, a national expert on UDL, inclusive practices for students with extensive and complex disabilities, and system change. Together they share behaviors that adults often misunderstand, how that can impact students, and what can be done to create a more neurodiverse affirming environment.

  • AI as a "Thought Partner" for UDL: Custom Scaffolds at Home

    Transform home learning by using AI as a personalized "thought partner" to create custom scaffolds for your child.   • An Overview of the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions Model

    This breakout session introduces parents to the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) model, a practical, relationship-based approach for understanding and addressing children’s challenging behaviors. The session will offer a clear overview of the model along with concrete strategies parents can begin using at home right away.

  • Building Effective Goals and Support for Dyslexic Students

    This session will focus on how to build effective goals and accommodations for dyslexic students. We will discuss how to determine baselines using data and how to craft goals that complement instruction and intervention as well as meet the student's needs. We will discuss multiple facets of reading and reading development with a focus on decoding, encoding, and reading fluency as well as how weaknesses in these can affect comprehension. Finally we will address some of the social/emotional challenges for students living with dyslexia.

This parent-led session centers family perspectives on AAC implementation, highlighting common barriers, communication breakdowns, and practices that supported meaningful progress. Through a moderated parent panel and guided discussion, families and school-based staff will gain insight into real-world experiences and identify ways to strengthen collaboration, consistency, and shared expectations to better support our AAC users.

  • Highly Capable & Chronically Exhausted: Parenting in the Special Education World

    Many parents of neurodivergent children are deeply informed, proactive, and resourceful—yet also burned out. This session validates that experience while exploring why capability often coexists with exhaustion. Starting with a guided visualization exercise, parenting coach JoAnn Perry and licensed therapist Leslie Kilpatrick of Presencing Parenthood will explore the often invisible labor of advocacy, emotional regulation, and navigating systems. Participants will learn practical strategies to reduce burnout while staying engaged with their child’s needs, with a focus on sustainability, self-compassion, and redefining what “doing enough” really means.

  • Multiple Pathways for Twice Exceptional Learners: FCPS' Continuum of AAP Services

Attendees will be able to identify how multiple pathways are designed to flexibly respond to the strengths, needs, and asynchronous development of twice-exceptional (2e) learners.

    Participants will gain practical, trauma-informed strategies that families and educators can use together to support learning, emotional well-being, and a sense of safety—especially for children with disabilities.

    Specially Designed Instruction is indicated on the Individualized Education Program (IEP). There is a direct link between the goals that have been identified on a student's IEP and the services (SDI) they are to receive. This presentation will present a more explicit way to indicate SDI on the IEP and include the correlation between explicit SDI indications and inclusive practices.

  • Think Like An Advocate: Turning Information Into Collaboration

    Navigating special education requires parents to understand complex processes and unfamiliar language while also managing strong emotions. Meetings can be overwhelming or confusing, which limits meaningful participation. This session introduces tools used by professional advocates to document and interpret information, communicate needs clearly, and avoid disputes before they form. Parents will learn how to be their own best advocate rather than hiring one, and how to build stronger, more collaborative relationships with their school teams.

  • When It’s Easier to Stay Home: Holding Onto Relationships While Honoring Your Child’s Needs

    Parenting a child with a diagnosis can quietly change relationships, often leaving parents unsure how to explain their child’s needs to friends and family. This session explores how to talk about a diagnosis with honesty and boundaries, while navigating social situations that can lead to withdrawal or self-isolation. We’ll discuss why isolation can feel easier—and why parents still deserve connection, friendship, and support. Practical, compassionate guidance will be shared to help families maintain relationships while honoring their child’s unique needs across different ages and stages.

  • Annandale High School Special Olympics Teamempowers students with and without disabilities through sports to build friendships, break down barriers, and create a school community where everyone feels valued and included. Learn more about Annandale High School .
  • ATConnect , the Assistive Technology Club, is a student-led organization at Thomas Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology using innovation to support the special education community! We organize student-led community events like ATConnect and school field trips, develop tailored assistive technology for others, and help students work with Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) software through fun games. Join us for a unique perspective on how student passion can help create inclusive experiences for everyone and an opportunity to see cool tech demos.
  • Bull Run Elementary Special Olympics Teamwill be sharing about Inclusion and their experiences being an athlete and being a peer helper. Learn more about Bull Run Elementary .
  • Pieces of Illumination (POI) is a youth-led initiative dedicated to supporting autistic children through sensory engagement, cognitive enrichment, and community connection. Our mission is to bring joy and belonging to neurodiverse individuals and their families. We organize large-scale puzzle donation drives and make regular visits to autism centers across the DMV area to deliver toys and engage with the kids. Through our work, we've formed lasting connections with over 20 local partner organizations. We also offer enrichment classes individually tailored to special-needs learners, strengthening relationships across the community. Follow us on Instagram @poi4community.
  • Marshall High School Unified Special Olympics Team, with and without developmental disabilities, play soccer, basketball, and track on the same team throughout the school year.  While they build community together during practices, competitions, and collaboration, they lead through purposeful action creating truly inclusive opportunities and rethinking spaces of belonging for all students in their school and across FCPS.   • FCPS offers telephone support to parents who do not speak English as their first language.  Participants can access the  Family Information Phone Lines and a school system employee will respond to your call in your preferred language within 24 hours, Monday through Friday.

Location: C113/114Childcare, available for students of varying abilities, was provided during both the morning and afternoon sessions. Special education staff was available to care for children with high support needs. The childcare team is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment with an appropriate staff to child ratio.

Public Transportation Options to Marshall High School

On Saturdays, public transportation near George C Marshall High School (7731 Leesburg Pike) in the Falls Church/Fairfax area is primarily served by Fairfax Connector routes along Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) and nearby Gallows Road, connecting to the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metro station. Key routes operating on weekends in the vicinity include Route 402 and 462, although specific stop schedules vary.

  • Metrobus F20 Route (King St-Old Town Station to Tysons Station)
    Operates on Saturdays between King St-Old Town Station and Tysons Station.  Connects with multiple Metro stations including, West and East Falls Church Station, King Street-Old Town Metro Station and Tysons Metro Station.  The F20 provides service to the Seven Corners Transit Center, Bailey's Crossroads, Northern Virginia Community College-Alexandria Campus, and travels along Duke Street in Alexandria.
