FCPS’ Budget Story: Where We’ve Been and Where We’re Going

Today’s students are the architects of tomorrow. An investment in FCPS is an investment in every child and in our whole community because we equip today’s young people to thrive in a future we can't yet predict, with the skills to not only adapt to a changing world, but to shape it. But we can’t do it without resources. Our budget priorities are:

  • Competitive compensation to reduce turnover and attract and retain the best educators.
  • Investments for differentiated learning (e.g., Universal Design for Learning, multilingual learners, Algebra credentialing) and addressing increased special education needs, ensuring all students receive the support required for high academic expectations.

Support for student safety and well-being through vital but non-educational programs and services like mental health resources, meals, and technology.

Fairfax County Public Schools is the primary engine driving the success of our local economy.

When our schools have the resources they need, all of Fairfax County succeeds.

We know that today’s students — and the skills they need to thrive — are changing. We’ve dedicated more resources to advanced math enrollment, preparing more students for high-demand careers in STEM fields. This success pipeline is critical for our business community and the future of Fairfax County's innovative economy.

Every dollar in our budget is paid for by the hard-working residents of Fairfax County, and we take our fiscal responsibility seriously.

  • 85% of our budget funds instruction.
  • Just 1.1% of our staff is central management, compared to 2-4% in surrounding jurisdictions.
  • Our school budgets are zero-based — not based on what each school received the previous year. Funding is updated annually based on factors such as projected enrollment, free or reduced price meals eligibility, or specialized services.

FCPS has the fifth lowest per-pupil spending compared to other area school districts in the metropolitan area and continues to provide excellence in education.
