New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

Finish the School Year With Strong Attendance!

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.

Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.

If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE . Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.

If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact your child’s school so staff can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources

Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update

On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.

Read Dr. Reid’s message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities .

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Message from Ms. Hinkson

Dear Coates Students and Families,

As we approach the final weeks of this school year, I want to share some personal news with you. After three wonderful years at Coates, I will be transitioning to a new role as the Assistant Principal at Floris Elementary School for the 2026–2027 school year.

It has been an absolute honor to serve as part of your school community. I am so grateful for the warm welcome you gave me three years ago and for the privilege of partnering with you to support your children’s growth and success.

To my students: seeing your smiles in the hallways, your hard work in the classrooms, and your kindness toward one another has been the highlight of my time here. You have taught me so much about resilience and joy. I leave Coates a stronger and more reflective leader because of the time I spent with you.

While I am excited for this next step in my journey, I will truly miss our community. I leave as a proud STAR, and I look forward to watching you all continue to SOAR.

With gratitude,

Resheeda Hinkson

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th Graders

The following immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grade each school year.

All students entering 7th gradeare required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

  • To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
  • To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.

  • Activity: With your child, brainstorm a brand-new invention to solve a problem, like shoelaces that tie themselves or a clothes dryer that folds clothes. Ask your child to tell or write a story about someone using the invention.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website .

FCPS Commitment to Weather Safety

At FCPS, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our highest priority — no matter the season. In extreme cold, we monitor National Weather Service (NWS) guidance, adjust outdoor activities, and ensure our buildings are warm and secure. In extreme heat, we modify or cancel outdoor activities, use on-site measurements to guide athletic decisions, and promote hydration and cooling breaks.

FCPS has plans in place to provide guidance during severe weather, including storms, flooding, and tornadoes. Decisions are informed by industry best practices, weather alerts, and a commitment to keeping our school community safe and healthy year-round. Read more about weather safety , including the differences between an advisory, watch, and warning.

Provide the County Government With Feedback on Its Budget

About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Opportunities to provide feedback to the county include Budget Town Hall Meetings airing on Channel 16 on Tuesday, April 7, at 7 p.m., (Springfield District) and Friday, April 10, at 6 p.m., (Franconia District).

You can also provide your input during the county’s Budget public hearings on Tuesday, April 14 , at 4 p.m., and Wednesday, April 15 , and Thursday, April 16 , at 3 p.m. at the Government Center Board Auditorium. Register in advance to speak

School Social Work Week

March 2-8 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. At Coates, we are grateful for our social worker, Mrs. Grady❤️ Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS .

Parent Coffee on Boundary Adjustments

This quarter’s Parent Coffee Hour will be focused on helping families navigate the implications to the FCPS Boundary Adjustment.  Impacted families will receive communication from the Division, including an opt-in/out form for eligible rising 5th and 6th graders, which will be due on March 13th.  It is important to note that per the school board meeting last night, FCPS will not be providing any transportation to elementary students who are opting to remain at their non-base school.

Parents may use the updated Boundary Location Tool linked here on the FCPS website to verify your base school location for the Fall of the 2026-27 school year.

If you need any assistance or would like to discuss any implications of the Boundary Adjustment w/ Mr. Basdekis, please join us in the Coates Cafeteria on Friday, March 6th from 9:15-10:15am. We will also have a virtual opportunity to discuss these implications at the PTA meeting on Thursday, March 12th

Would you like to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Coates ES

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey . This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvemes.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23.
