Music and Computer Technology (MCT) I

Music & Computer Technology I is a hands-on introduction to modern music creation, composition, and production using industry-standard technology. Students create original music across a wide range of genres while working independently and collaboratively with MIDI, digital audio, and notation software. Using tools such as Pro Tools, Arturia, Native Instruments, Sibelius, MuseScore, Musition, and Auralia, students explore beat making, songwriting, arranging, ensemble and chamber writing, film and video game scoring, live sound fundamentals, and digital audio theory. By the end of the course, students develop a professional portfolio of compositions, arrangements, and recordings that demonstrate both creative growth and technical skill.

Music and Computer Technology (MCT II)

Grades:12 | Credits:2 | Prerequisite:Music and Computer Technology I

Music & Computer Technology II is an advanced, project-based course that builds on MCT I and focuses on real-world music production and industry experiences. Students spend the year developing large-scale creative projects while exploring advanced topics such as mastering, professional live sound, studio workflows, and event production, including planning and running a festival-style performance. Students gain full access to the lab’s inventory of synthesizers, microphones, and production equipment, participate in studio visits throughout the Fairfax area, and engage in job-shadowing and career exploration opportunities. The course emphasizes independence, collaboration, and professional readiness, preparing students for collegiate study, careers in music and audio technology, or serious independent creative work.
