Second grade is a year of growing independence and discovery. Students begin to see themselves as confident learners, building on what they know while stretching toward new challenges in a supportive, caring classroom community.

Growing as Readers and WritersSecond graders continue to build fluency as readers, exploring books with growing independence and joy. They practice talking about stories, making connections, and applying comprehension strategies to deepen their understanding. As writers, students develop their voices through composition and writing mechanics, learning how to share ideas with clarity and creativity.

Expanding Mathematical ThinkingIn math, students strengthen their skills in addition and subtraction, learn about place value, and begin working with more complex concepts like measurement, geometry, and early multiplication. Problem-solving is at the heart of their learning, helping them see how math connects to the world around them.

Exploring the World Through Science and Social StudiesSecond graders’ natural curiosity shines as they investigate habitats, weather, and cycles in science, and explore communities, geography, and the responsibilities of citizenship in social studies. Hands-on learning, projects, and discussions keep them engaged and eager to discover more.

At Forestville, second grade is a time to nurture curiosity, celebrate progress, and build confidence. Together with families, we encourage students to grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, and friends—ready for the adventures ahead.
