New Cellphone and Smart Device Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

A Heartfelt Thanks to Oakton PTA & our Parent Community

Our OES staff is incredibly grateful to the PTA and our wonderful community for making this week’s Staff Appreciation so special. Breakfast, lunches and snacks to sweet and salty treats and Tropical Smoothies, every detail was appreciated and truly brightened our days. Because of your generosity and support, the week was a tremendous success. Our staff had so much fun and looked forward to each day’s celebration. Thank you for making us feel valued and cared for!

Oakton Pyramid Art Show

A big thank you to our wonderful art teachers, Mrs. Gleason and Mrs. Georgacopoulos, for helping make the Oakton Pyramid Art Show such a special event! The show highlighted incredible student artwork from across the Oakton Pyramid, including many beautiful creations from our Oakton Elementary artists. Our students were so proud to share their creativity and talent with families and community members who attended.

It was also especially meaningful to see former Oakton Elementary students—now attending Thoreau and Oakton High School—continuing to pursue their love of art that first began here at Oakton Elementary. We are so proud to see our students’ creativity continue to grow for years to come!

FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a safe menu for students .

2026-2027 Class Assignments

At Oakton, we strive for healthy, heterogeneous student enrollment in each classroom. We have a process in place whereby teachers, specialists, and administrators confer with grade level teams to make recommendations that will result in a well-balanced classroom.  These settings include a broad range of academic levels, behavioral characteristics, and learning styles.  Teacher styles are also taken into consideration when completing teacher assignments.

To further outline the process, there are eight areas used in the determination of class assignments.  These include:

  • Heterogeneous groupings
  • Gender balance
  • Balance of special needs
  • Peer interactions
  • Special services
  • Learning environment
  • Health and medical concerns
  • Equitable distribution of students

These criteria play a role in the final decision for assignment. While parent input is welcomed, a request for an individual teacher cannot be granted.  Assigning students is a complex and educational process that we take seriously.

Parents are welcome to share information about their child on our Parent Input Google Form . All input must be shared via this google form by Friday, May 15.  We will only be using this document when we create classes, emails will not be considered .

Staff Appreciation Week

Next week (May 4-8) is Staff Appreciation Week and we join with our entire school community in honoring the dedication and skill of our tremendously talented staff of educators - teachers, special education teachers, specialists, counselors, resource teachers, instructional assistants, and office staff - who are devoted to making a positive difference in the lives of the children at Oakton ES. The faculty of our school is committed to excellence, and this special week of recognition is one way that we can show our appreciation.

Throughout the week, we invite parents and students to share thoughts of appreciation through notes, cards, and kind words.  We thank our wonderful PTA for all they have planned for next week to treat our staff!

Volunteer Appreciation

We are deeply grateful to our parent volunteers for the time, energy, and care you bring to our school community. Your support—whether in classrooms, at events, or behind the scenes—makes a meaningful difference for our students and staff every day. Thank you for being such an essential part of what makes our school a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Spring Band Concert

Our Spring Band Concert was a fantastic celebration of our students’ hard work and musical growth. A special thank you goes to our Band Director, Debra Cockey, whose dedication has helped grow the program over the past several years to nearly 100 students. It’s inspiring to see so many of our musicians extending their talents through area band, as well as solo and ensemble performances. The concert featured several impressive solos, and the band’s rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody was a true highlight of the evening. We are so proud of all our performers and grateful for the strong, vibrant program Ms. Cockey continues to build.

FCPS School Board Recommends Delaying Non-Essential Smartphone Use Until the Completion of 8th Grade

On April 23, 2026, the FCPS School Board unanimously voted in support of a Resolution recommending that FCPS families delay providing their children with smartphones for non-essential use until high school. This Resolution makes clear that the School Board supports community initiatives like  Wait Until 8th  and empowers the parents, PTAs and administrators to support such campaigns.

To keep everyone safe, please follow these simple rules for your art:

SPRING PICTURE DAY - APRIL 15, 2026

Order pictures HERE .

  1. When an order is placed online, the parent/guardian will receive a camera pass via email. This can be brought to picture day. The photographer will photograph the printed camera pass along with the student.
  2. If a student is not able to print their camera pass, that is not a problem. We will match up the student to their order manually in the production process.
  3. A parent may order from the flyer up until 24 hours after picture day. After 24 hours, the online ordering access may close. This will allow our imaging team to "Pull" all orders submitted and match them with the students photographed.
  4. When pictures are returned to school, all students that purchased pictures will receive their prepaid package. Any student that was photographed but did not order a package, will receive a "Proof" (PX) of their picture that was taken on picture day.

3rd Grade Wax Museum History came to life as our students transformed into famous figures from the past and present! From inventors to leaders to trailblazers, these young historians brought their research to life and shared the stories of the people who changed our world. We’re so proud of their hard work and creativity!

We were thrilled to welcome author and parent Alyssa Colman to speak with our 4th and 5th graders!

Mrs. Colman shared her journey as a writer and offered students insight into where stories come from and how curiosity can turn ideas into books. Thank you, Mrs. Colman, for encouraging our young writers to keep imagining, creating, and sharing their stories!

March 25 - 3 Hour Early Release

Our next 3 hour early release for teacher training and planning is on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

If your child care needs are different from what your child/children did on the February early release, please fill out the OES March 25 Early Release Child Care Update Form for each child so we can plan accordingly for this round.

If you plan for your child to follow the same routine as they did in February, you do not need to fill out the form.

We will send a confirmation to families by Friday, March 20.

Please note that there is also a 2-hour early release on Friday, March 27 for the end of the quarter.  There will not be any childcare (except for SACC) on this day.

Thank you!  Please reach out to [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

National School Social Work Week

March 2-8 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS .

Community Conversations: Share Your Thoughts With Dr. Reid

As a listening leader, connecting with community members across our school division is critical to FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Child care and interpretation services will be provided. Events are open to all. Visit the superintendent’s engagement page for the most up-to-date information.

Random Acts of Kindness Spirit Week New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-ins even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

That’s Was So Rad: A Look Back at the Variety Show!

Our stage transformed into a time machine this week for our "Totally 2000s" Variety Show, and let’s just say—it was "da bomb." From the frosted tips to the neon tracksuit vibes, our students brought the energy of the new millennium back to life in spectacular fashion.

The night was packed with iconic moments, including:

  • Boy Band Mania:Heartthrob harmonies and synchronized choreography that had the whole crowd cheering.

  • Dance Acts:High-energy explosions of color and rhythm that stole the spotlight.

  • Throwback Skits:A clever Back to the Future crossover and a messy, nostalgic Double Dare segment.

  • Individual Talent:Piano, drums, and strings instruments were showcased.

  • The "Tech":A huge shoutout to our emcees, who kept the show moving while "texting" on their vintage flip phones.

👏 A Huge Thank You

Putting on a production of this scale is no small feat. This show was made possible by the tremendous dedication of our parent volunteers and staffwho spent countless hours on rehearsals, costumes, and logistics.

We also want to give a massive standing ovation to our outstanding stage crew. They worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure every transition was seamless and every spotlight hit its mark.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our talented performers. It was truly a show to remember!

Dear Oakton Elementary Families,

We hope you and your families have stayed safe and warm during this week’s winter weather. After the recent snow (ice) storm, our Oakton campus is looking especially picturesque.

Preparing our school for reopening has taken a tremendous amount of effort. We are incredibly grateful to our hardworking custodial team, who have gone above and beyond to clear snow and ice from walkways, entrances, and parking areas to ensure our campus is ready and safe for students and staff. It is still a work in progress and we are thankful to the FCPS Facilities Office for partnering with us to continue to remove the remaining snow and ice from kiss and ride and our bus loop.

As we return to school next week, please plan for a little extra time during arrival and dismissal. While main roads have improved, many sidewalks and neighborhood streets remain slippery or narrowed by snowbanks. School buses will likely need some extra time to maneuver through the narrow streets.

Also, with temperatures expected to remain at or below freezing, please be sure your child is dressed warmly in layers.

We can’t wait to welcome our Panthers back to school next week and hear the hallways buzzing once again.

-Mrs. Kelley, Mr. Eck, & Mrs. Holzinger

Prior to the snow, we held two wonderful PTA events! Smiles, school spirit, and lots of learning on display! Our PTA Spelling Bee crowned an impressive winner - congratulations to Chava V. and runners-up, Tanaz A. and Sophia G. International Night brought our community together to celebrate cultures from around the world. Thank you to our amazing PTA for organizing these memorable events, and to our dedicated staff for supporting and cheering on our students every step of the way.

National School Counseling Weekhighlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

School counselors work with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. We are very fortunate to have fantastic school counselors at OES!  Thank you Mrs. Cahuantzi and Miss Jonesfor all you do for our students, staff, and families.
