Fairfax County Public Schools is developing the boundary for our new school, Skyview High School, which is located in the western part of Fairfax County. Establishing a boundary for a new high school affects surrounding schools and pyramids. The following western pyramids will be included in this process:
Based on community feedback, FCPS has eliminated adjustments to elementary school boundaries from this study. While feeder patterns — the middle and/or high schools that some elementary schools would attend — may change, elementary school boundarieswill not be adjusted at this time .
The Fairfax County School Board is scheduled to vote on the new boundary for Skyview, and for the western pyramids as needed, in July. Boundary changes will not be implemented until the 2027-28 school year.
Skyview’s boundary development follows FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review , which was initiated by the School Board with their update to Boundary Policy 8130 in July 2024. The policy provides guidance to help ensure that enrollment, facilities, programming, and student well-being remain consistent with the needs of an evolving community. The comprehensive review aimed to address long-standing challenges within the current boundaries, including split feeder patterns, attendance islands, and enrollment imbalances. The School Board approved boundary changes at its January 22 meeting. Since FCPS’ purchase of Skyview occurred while the comprehensive review was well under way, FCPS decided to defer consideration of boundary changes for schools in the western pyramids listed above pending a separate review this spring.

Developing Skyview High School’s boundary involves extensive collaboration, careful analysis of data, and opportunities for meaningful community engagement — similar to the comprehensive boundary review. The following goals are guiding this work and helping to ensure a transparent and successful process:
FCPS is committed to providing opportunities for robust community engagement during the Skyview boundary development process. It is also required by FCPS Boundary Policy 8130 and the Code of Virginia .
Our first round of community meetings were held on April 28 and April 30. The same slides were presented at both events. We shared initial draft scenarios and gathered feedback from the community. Feedback from the meetings will help inform the development of one or more revised scenarios.

The revised scenarios will be presented during a second round of community meetings in May. These meetings will be held in person at Skyview High School and virtually via Zoom. If you plan to attend in person or virtually, please click one of the links to register.
The same information will be shared at both meetings.
Families can now explore and visualize how the new draft scenarios may affect school boundaries using our Boundary Explorer Tool .
Developed specifically for the Skyview High School and Western Pyramids boundary study, this interactive tool — similar to the one used during the comprehensive boundary review — helps families understand how proposed changes could impact their school or neighborhood. Community members can also share their feedback in the Boundary Explorer Tool, which will help inform the boundary development process. The commenting function in the tool will be open through Wednesday, May 13, at 11:59 p.m.
Please note that these maps reflect very early draft scenarios, based on more than 1,400 feedback form responses and other input. They will be revised and shared with the community again for additional feedback.
Explore Draft Boundary Scenarios
To help organize and communicate the changes, we’ve grouped our proposed adjustments into three scenarios, each focusing on a different set of high-impact boundary issues across the county.
More information about each of these scenarios and the projected outcomes are included in the community meeting presentation starting on slide 47.
Balance Utilization and Feeder Patterns
Address feeder coherence and overutilization. Targeted near-term disruptions, some vulnerability to future residential growth.
Improve Utilization & Minimize Disruption
Moves the fewest students of any scenario. Achieves the best current utilization balance, though does not account for future development pressure. Introduces new split feeders to limit reassignments.
Maximize Feeder Alignment/Utilization Balance
Greater near-term changes in exchange for thorough boundary alignment. Reduces future overcrowding due to development pressure.
FCPS has been collecting the data submitted from various tools used during the Comprehensive Boundary Review that reference the “western high school.” FCPS has also been on-boarding a consultant to assist with the technical components of the boundary development. FCPS will provide the previous data as well as facility and student data to begin their data analysis.
A kickoff meeting with the community was held on Wednesday, March 25, at Westfield High School. At this meeting FCPS outlined what to expect, reviewed criteria guiding boundary development, answered questions, and gathered additional input on key themes related to boundary planning. A feedback form was also shared with participants and will be open through Wednesday, April 8.
Input collected will be provided to the consultant who will then begin to draft scenarios for the next phase.

FCPS' consultant will develop three draft boundary scenarios (maps) based on established criteria and community feedback received during the kickoff meeting as well as previously collected feedback.
The consultant will present the three draft scenarios for the Skyview boundary. Meeting participants will have an opportunity to provide feedback using the Boundary Explorer Tool. Additional details, including meeting dates and locations, will be shared soon.
Revised boundary scenarios will be shared with the community for additional feedback. The consultant will use this input to further refine the maps in collaboration with FCPS leadership.
We will share more information as it becomes available.
The superintendent will present a final recommendation for boundaries to the School Board for consideration and action at a board meeting in July instead of June, which was previously scheduled. This will provide more time for the consultant to analyze feedback received after the second round of draft scenarios are shared in May and prior to the community meetings to be scheduled in June. Boundary changes will go into effect for the 2027-28 school year as planned.
