Falls Church High School Construction Updates
Questions and comments about the construction project are shared at community meetings, via feedback forms, and through email. We will share answers and updates in this section.
- The safety of our students, staff, and community members is paramount. During construction, FCPS Design and Construction staff ensure that the site and all areas occupied by the school are safe. In actively managing the project, our team also makes certain that the contractor adheres to all FCPS safety procedures and complies with all applicable regulations.
- FCPS Design and Construction remains committed to prompt resolution of any safety concerns.
- Upon project completion, there will be a total of 546 spaces on the school site.
- Due to an increase in building footprint and construction activities, there have been impacts to available parking. At present, the school has approximately 228 spaces on-site. Design and Construction staff are working to help mitigate these impacts; one example is the leasing of 79 additional parking spaces at Providence Recreation Center for use by staff and students during school hours.
- The project started in the summer of 2022. The school building is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2026. The athletic fields renovation is scheduled to be completed fall of 2026.
- This is a phased-occupied renovation project. Phases 1 and 2 have been completed. Phase 3, in which we are presently engaged, is the final phase of the project.
- Current Phase 3 efforts include the physical education wing, main gymnasium, weight room, auxiliary gymnasium, and additional classrooms. This scope is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2026. The school will gain access to some areas earlier.
- The Performing Arts Wing is scheduled to be fully completed in the summer of 2026.
- The renovation of the Athletics Field Complex is slated to take about 9 months, running from January to early fall 2026. Fields will be completed in phases, which means the school will begin to gain access to newly renovated facilities beginning summer of 2026.
- To be consistent with FCPS energy and environmental sustainability goals, the project is designed following guidelines from the Collaborative for High-Performing Schools (CHPS).
- The project is designed to feature advanced building control systems, improved air quality, increased natural light, and deliver a healthy, comfortable learning environment.
- The front entrance features exciting elements such as expansive cantilevered glass walls.
- The renovation of the music wing, including the auditorium, has been completed.
- The performing arts supportive space wing is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2026.
The project includes a comprehensive renovation of the athletic fields complex, accompanied by the construction of a new parking lot with a capacity of 134 cars and a new stormwater management facility.
The current athletic fields project scope features:
- A new softball field that will be rotated to improve solar orientation, with all new restrooms, press box, scoreboard, dugouts, bleachers, batting cage, field lighting, lighting controls, irrigation system, fencing, and sidewalk access.
- Renovations to the baseball field, highlighted by all new dugouts, press box, field lighting, lighting controls, irrigation system, and accessibility upgrades.
- Stadium enhancements are planned to include all new entry plaza, concession stand, restrooms, ticket booth, storage facility, press box, light pole heads, lighting controls, and accessibility upgrades.
- Six newly-located tennis courts. The tennis courts are slated to include court fencing with gates, court accessories, landscaping, practice walls, fencing connecting to the softball and practice fields, and accessibility upgrades.
- A new synthetic turf, multi-sport practice field. This field is designed to be equipped with football and soccer goals, new lighting, and new lighting controls.
- Two refurbished shot put areas.

Past Engagement, Planning & Construction Information
Safety
- Streetlights are located on the residential side of Marc Drive. FCPS visited and all pole lights are now working, however some tree branches are blocking light.
- FCPS Design and Construction walked through the school building during evening hours and found out the wall pack lights and light poles are working.
- One additional temporary light will be added in the back of the building, adjacent to the construction entrance.
- If other issues are found or complaints submitted, FCPS Design and Construction will work to resolve them promptly.
- The Office of School Safety will be engaged regarding safety along the street to Providence and at intersections.
Parking
- There will be 516 total completed parking spaces once the project is complete.
- FCPS is currently leasing 79 parking spaces at Providence Park (this is not included in the 516-count above). During school hours there are spaces available at Providence Park.
- During Phase 2, the increase in building footprint and construction activities around the building will impact parking.
- FCPS Design and Construction is reaching out to Saint Philip’s Church about the possibility of allowing parking for FCHS.
- FCPS Design and Construction is reaching out to VDOT and local jurisdiction police departments for information about potential parking along Jaguar Trail.
- FCPS Design and Construction is reminding contractors to park in their designated parking areas.
- FCPS’ Office of Transportation will confirm if overnight bus parking is needed.
Construction Schedule
- FCPS Design and Construction is working with the contractor to make up time in phases 2 and 3. Time can be made up during the interior renovation as long as additional material delays or unforeseeable issues during demolition occur.
- An addition or renovation project in an occupied building typically has a longer duration compared to a similar project in a non-occupied building. High school renovations are typically four years or longer.
- There is no incentive built into the contract with the general contractor to finish early. Follow-up and progress meetings are held with the contractor to ensure they meet deadlines.
Design and Planning Elements
- Removing ceilings is necessary to facilitate the installation of new utility lines, both temporarily and permanently, during construction. Additionally, it allows for easy access to building systems for modifications and is frequently required for inspection and testing purposes during phased construction. This also allows for the removal of existing utilities when no longer needed.
- Budgeting for interior items post-renovation is determined by school leadership and is not part of the renovation scope.
- Solar panels are not part of the design.
Theatre
- The theater seats are relatively new and could last 35 years once reinstalled in the renovated auditorium.
- The theater stage floor will be replaced with a new floor. No change was made to the stage floor in the project plan.
- The theater stage lighting is consistent with Oakton High School’s stage lighting. No changes were made to stage lighting in the project plan.
Athletics
- New wiring and lighting circuits for athletic lighting are in the project scope. FCPS Design and Construction has records of existing lighting systems and newly proposed lighting, which can be shared with individuals upon request.
- Athletics revenue is not covered with the renovation scope and cannot be addressed by FCPS Design and Construction.
