Oliver Anthony, the country music sensation whose viral song Rich Men North of Richmond became a cultural touchstone, is taking an unexpected step back from the conventional music industry.
The 32-year-old, whose real name is Christopher Anthony Lunsford, recently stunned fans by announcing in an Instagram comment that he’s “in the process of getting out of the music industry.”
His reason? A sense of disillusionment with the commercial side of music. “It’s a big joke,”he shared, adding that he’s eager to focus instead on a new mission: ministry.
Rather than leaving his music behind, though, Anthony is restructuring his career entirely, choosing to operate as a ministry.
In this new approach, he’ll blend his music with a message, creating a “Rural Revival” focused on connecting with and uplifting small-town and rural communities.
In response to a fan worried he might stop making music, he clarified, “I’ll still be releasing music just like normal; I’ll just be set up legally as a ministry.”
For Anthony, this isn’t just about leaving a career that many dream of—it’s a conscious choice to go beyond fame and bring something deeper to his audience.
He’s always been about more than just catchy tunes. With his rise to fame, he’s talked openly about what matters to him: values like self-reliance, community, and the strength found in small-town life.
As his audience grew, he felt a need to find a way to help beyond his music, which led him to the idea of a “Rural Revival” ministry.
His plan is to bring his music to the people who need it most, and his new ministry will allow him to do that on his own terms.
With this shift, Anthony wants to support communities that feel left behind or forgotten.
He’s no stranger to speaking on topics like the struggles of rural life, the frustration with big industry, and the importance of values-based living.
This ministry, he says, will give him a way to connect with fans directly and make a real difference in their lives.
Even as Anthony prepares to step away from the music industry’s traditional setup, he’s not letting go of his passion for performing.
In fact, he’s gearing up for extensive tours in Europe and Australia in early 2025.
Starting on January 30 in Oslo, Norway, he’ll make stops in cities across Europe, wrapping up in Dublin, Ireland, on February 24.
Then, from March 7 to March 16, he’ll take his music to Australia, visiting major cities like Brisbane, Cairns, Newcastle, Sydney, and Melbourne.
Tickets for his Australian shows go on sale November 15, and he encouraged fans to set their reminders. “I’m bringing my music down under, and I’d love for you to be there,”he wrote.
His choice to tour internationally first was intentional. Anthony says he gained new insights from traveling abroad this year, which sparked a desire to connect with audiences outside the United States.
“Until I visited Europe and Australia during this year’s tour, I had no idea how similar we all lived,” he shared.
“I assumed we were completely different. It’s not anything like on TV.”
Instead, he found that many people abroad shared similar values and struggles to those he sees in small-town America.
Anthony’s travels inspired a new mission for his ministry. He envisions a global movement that unites people across borders who share the same small-town values and way of life.
“There is much of rural and small-town Europe that reminds me of older times in North America ,”he wrote, reflecting on how European countryside communities mirror aspects of rural America.
His dreams for this ministry reach beyond just music. He hopes to foster real-world connections among rural communities across continents.
Anthony even imagines a future where Scottish and Irish descendants of Appalachian settlers visit their ancestors’ homeland.
Or where British people who feel restricted by urban life find freedom and opportunity on overlooked American farmland.
“Times are changing, and we must unite if we’re going to survive all of this mess,”he told his fans, explaining that he sees the world at a crossroads and believes in the strength of collective action and community resilience.
This Rural Revival, as he calls it, could bring a fresh sense of purpose and belonging to people across the globe who feel alienated by modern life.
Anthony is quick to acknowledge that this new direction isn’t a seamless transition—it’s a “DIY” project that he’ll be building “in baby steps.”
His music journey started with humble, grassroots beginnings, and it seems fitting that his ministry will follow the same path.
Just as he found success in a nontraditional way, bypassing typical music industry channels, he’s now aiming to create something with the same authentic spirit.
His new ministry may take time to develop, but it seems that Oliver Anthony is ready to bring a new dimension to his music and message.
For his fans, Anthony’s ministry feels like the natural evolution of an artist whose songs speak for the people who often feel voiceless.
Now, they’ll have the chance to be part of a movement that goes beyond the music and aims to connect communities, strengthen values, and bring hope to those in need.
This isn’t the end of Oliver Anthony ’s journey; it’s just the beginning of a new path, one driven by a powerful vision of unity, resilience, and revival.
