Last but not least, in the thankless role of Conrad's mutinous second-in-command, Jesus Pastor, a under-used dancer great ardor and dramatic presence, brought a simmering passion and delightful menace to a role that's often little more than a disgruntled (if technically flashy) second banana. Pastor was on fire in his happy-pirate and piratess character dances with the equally game Jennifer Alexander, and seemed on the verge of making some real mischief in his sword-striking dance with his fellow pirates. I wondered what sort of a Conrad he might make.

Herman Cornejo was the Joker on Friday, and while he leapt about with his usual abandon, he (or the character) seemed more an annoying intrusion than a comic presence. He did rally nobly, however, when a piece of black tulle tore loose from a dancer's skirt and he swept it up and made a bit of comic business out of it.
Otherwise, Irina Dvorovenko made a pretty but blank Queen of Hearts, and Xiomara Reyes underplayed the Two of Diamonds. A strong quintet of Hearts ? Jesus Pastor, Craig Salstein, Eric Underwood, Sascha Radetsky and David Hallberg ? again looked too determinedly cheerful but provided the high point of the ballet from a dance standpoint. Charles Barker conducted.
