エルビス・プレスリーとビッグ・ママ・ソーントンの Hound Dog

「ハウンド・ドッグ(Hound Dog）」は、エルビス・プレスリー(Elvis Presley)が、1956年に「冷たくしないで (Don't Be Cruel)」のB面として発表した曲です。A面、B面ともにヒット曲となり。「ハウンド・ドッグ」は1956年8月18日に、ビルボードのポップ・チャートの1位を獲得。以後11週連続でその座に留まり、この年の年間ランキングで第1位となりました。

しかし、この曲のオリジナルは、1953年にビッグ・ママ・ソーントン(Big Mama Thornton)が発表した曲で、ビルボードのR&Bチャートで7週連続1位となり、200万枚近くを売り上げた。ソーントンの最大のヒット曲だったそうです。

ちなみに、「ハウンド・ドッグ」とは猟犬のことではなく、当時の黒人のスラングで安っぽいヒモ男の意味であり、ソーントンの歌詞では、

You ain't nothing but a hound dog
Been snoopin' 'round my door
You can wag your tail
But I ain't gon' feed you no more
あんたはただのヒモ男(ハウンド・ドッグ)よ
ドアのあたりを嗅ぎまわっているばかり
しっぽを振ってきたってエサはやらないわよ

となっているますが、
プレスリーは、ヒモ男のことを歌うわけにはいかないので、歌詞を変えて、

You ain't nothin' but a hound dog
Cryin' all the time
Well, you ain't never caught no rabbit
お前はただの猟犬
いつも吠えまくっている
でもウサギの一匹さえ捕まえたことがないよ

と歌っています。
