「ローソクの科学」の　some one

ファラディは、「ロウソクの科学」という著作に見られるように、生涯多くの講演をこなしている。ファラディのクリスマス講演は1827年の「化学」から始まって、この「ロウソクの科学」「The Chemical History of a Candle」は1860年におこなわれた最後のクリスマス講演である。

「ロウソクの科学」は1861年に出版されて、150年以上も読み継がれているベストセラーである。岩波文庫等を入手できる。

ローソクの科学の第１講の以下でのゲイ・リュサックが出てくる部分で　which Gay Lussac, or some one

Mr. Field, of Lambeth, has supplied me abundantly with beautiful illustrations of the candle and its materials. I shall therefore now refer to them. And, first, there is the suet—the fat of the ox—Russian tallow, I believe, employed in the manufacture of these dips, which Gay Lussac, or some one who entrusted him with his knowledge, converted into that beautiful substance, stearin, which you see lying beside it.

この'some one' が誰かと言うところで、気になり調査したところ、

ユストゥス・フォン・リービッヒ　と　エドモンド・フレミーが候補として考えられる。

脂肪の鹸化についての研究を行い、1850年にはゲイ・リュサックの跡をついでパリ植物園の教授（化学）に就いている人物。
