1) THE NEW FACE OF IRAQ 2) Real Fakes 3) Scientists Can Now Make Diamonds. Is This the End of a $60 Billion Industry? Mihoko is a new face in my English class. Mr. Tanaka is one of the old faces in my English class. Scientists Can Now Make Diamonds. Scientists Can Now Make Diamonds⇒科学的にダイアモンドの製造が可能になっている という意味合いですね 動詞の現在形は、「現在形」という用語では説明がきちんと出来ません動詞の現在形は、「普段からしている動作の形」と言い換えるべきです 上記の場合、can がない文章では、普段から(=いつも)ダイアモンドの製造をしている、という意味合いですね これは大切な点です。I get up at 6:30 in the morning. Is This the End of a $60 Billion Industry? Is this the end of LiveDoor? Is this the end of 民主党? Mr. Nagata's problem shows an end of 民主党. Is this the start of New Giants? Is this the end of--?Is this start of -- ?

A friend in need is a friend indeed. I need(want) some water. I need(want) some water. KEN

◎ Monday Feb. 27I held an English Seminar at SOHO Support Center this day.I had two participants: One is a member of Iizuka Toastmasters'Club. This gentleman works in Hakata.Another one is also from Iizuka. She studies at 青山学園大学 in Tokyo and she saidthat she was back in Iizuka now during her spring vacation. She finished the English Course at 嘉穂東高校.She finished the high school three years ago.I got a little bit surprised at her story. She is one of my juniors and a friend of one of myex-students, T・Y.T・Y-san was a 嘉穂東 High School student. She was a tennis player. I taught her English for two years. At first, she wanted to become a flight attendant in the future. That was why I decided to teach her English. She was a really good student, showing a great sense of word-selection.But I broke off the relationship with her two years later. It seemed to me that she became very loose in her behavior. For example, she did not show up at an appointed lesson several times, etc.The change of her attitude took place around when she had a steadyboyfriend. I came to know that she became intimate with him,and so I got shocked very much. After a long consideration, I decided to get her out of my course. Then, one day, I let her know that she no longer needed to take my course, and she accepted it. But I had a second thought and I came to realizethat I shouldn't have removed her out of my course, sendingher some letters to cancel my decision. But it was too late.---------------------------------------------------Anyway, in the today's seminar, we practiced oral translationin the first one hour and did learned and practiced so manyuseful English expressions using coins.I hope that this seminar has inspired them.I came home in the evening.I had two English lessons: a Kaho High School studentand a college student at 活水女子大.The college student is now back and stays here during spring vacation.---------------------------------------------------------------------

They will be able to meet lots of peoplethere, enjoy my English-mixed presentation and my English lessonas well as drinking (with beauties around). As you know, I have three 弟子s.Two of them are adults and fellow translators. One of them is a college student. The college student and her sister kindly helpedme in the business show as their part-time job.Of course, one of my part-timers, Chie joined theshow to help me from 下関. Why did I ask the sisters to help me in the show?I had the following three reasons or purposes:1) I wanted the sisters to meet and make friends with chie.2) I just wanted them to learn something through business meeting which will help them in the future.3) I wanted the deshi to use her English command. I knew that one of the participating companies was run by a British gentleman and the present would join the show. I wanted her to try to talk to him and wanted to show her my business talk with him. Whenever I ask my deshis or my pupils to do a part-time job,I give them additional opportunities or something beneficial to them, not only work itself, strongly hoping that such opportunities or benefits will help them later, especially when they begin to workfor a corporate organization. This is how I always try to develop human resources. The theme of this business show was "Sports, Tourism and Leisure".So, businesses in these fields are supposed to join the show. The show always start with presentation by designated companies. Each representative from such designated companies are allowedto introduce their company or services or products within three minutes. This time, I was the 8th speaker. Since the theme included "sports", so I started my business presentationwith the introduction of myself as the designated translatorfor Japan Wrestling Federation, especially for women's team.I talked that I am always ready to work for an international sports eventas the translator and I am very happy to provide my translation serviceto trading companies(I found some trading companies among the participants). At the same time, I introduced my new translation service,<無料通訳サービスthrough mobile phone> and gave them a quiz about the logic of one Japanese sentence. After the presentation session, lots of business people came tothe booth floor. I had to admit that I did not have so many inquiriesthis time, but I got a couple of reliable inquiries and they will benew customers of mine, I am sure. The sisters were responsible for handing our fliers, but they seemed to have got confused due to lack ofexperience in that work. I don't blame them for this. During the show, I introduced chie to the sisters. Chie will be a mama in several months and looks to be very happy. Chie is a really wonderful lady I love from the bottom of my heart. She a lady of talents: She's a piano & guitar player(Her father was a pro-jazz pianist.)Chie is an expert in punk rock(I call her "Punk Chie")She's also a good Japanese traditional dancer. She's a great dressmaker. She does dressmaking to sell at a localclothing shop in 下関. She's also a very good cook so that she saysthat she could publish a few books now.Plus, she is gentle and pays a good attention to everything around her. The sisters, who often heard about chie from me, really enjoyed meeting with her. Chie also felt the same way as the sisters did. This was an alternative purpose I had plannedabout the attendance of the sisters to the show.I'm sure that both of chie and the sisters will make good friends soon. The sisters are also very charming and attractive ladies.Their meeting with chie will benefit the sisters, I guarantee. After the show, I, together with the three wonderful ladies, paid a visit to Taiwan Trade Center, Fukuoka Office andItalian Trade Center, Fukuoka Office to say hello to thestaff members.-------------------------------------------この大学生の弟子には、期待をしております。 As for the young deshi, I expect her very much now.She has a good drive to learn English.I would like to try my best to train her into a goodEnglish communicator. This is the reason I decided to stay in Iizuka.I have had a certain number of pupils so far who wanted to be a pro-translator or to use English professionally in the future. Most of them failed due to various reasons, including shockingreasons, before they achieved their dreams. But this deshi seems to be different from them.Ken Suetsugu

◎ Tuesday, Feb. 21st<サンボ着と柔道着>As mentioned in my previous diary, I visited a localelementary school in Kaho Town.I had a partner this day who is from Russia. We were supposed to talk about Russia, its sports, and culturesas well as other Asian countries. The Russian guy, named Edward, talked first for about 40 min. While listening to his story, I sometimes saw students to check howthey were listening to him. After his introduction, I began to talk about SAMBO.First, I introduced myself, saying "Hello, I'm Ken, an English interpreter.I'm very pleased to be here. And I am really happy to introducethe Russian national martial arts, sambo. Whenever I visit localschools, I teach English to the students. But today I am here to talk aboutsambo. This is the very first time for me to do so at a local school."Student were all surprised, because I spoke English just likean American does. This is what we call [掴み].I introduced myself as the designated translator for Japan WrestlingFederationespecially for Women's Team, joking about Mr. Animal Hamaguchi. After this, I said to them, "I've been a judo wrestler, Olympic-stylewrestlerand sambo wrestler. ", showing photos of wrestling, 柔道着、and サンボ着.I asked students of 5th and 6th graders if any of them experienced judo. One boy raised his hand and so I asked him to come to me.I told him to try 柔道着 on.He said that he did judo only for three days and quit.(Other students laughed at this story.)Then, I gave them a quiz:柔道着(他の着物でも)を着る時は、着物の左の裾を上にするでしょうか?右の裾を上にするでしょうか?I told them to raise their hands at each question.More students raised their hands when I asked them allif they thought the right-side hem (右裾) should be on the left.I told them, 着物を着る時は左側を上(前)にします。 (when we wear kimono or 柔道着, we should put the left hem on the right. )Japan was a samurai country, or samurai-oriented countryfor quite a long time. Samurai wore two swords on the left.If they had wore kimono with the right hem on the left, the right hem sometimes would have been an obstacleto them when they wanted to pull out their swords. That's why they should wear kimono with 左前.In Japan, the left side has been more oriented than the right side. For example, we keep left when we drive a car.I explained the above matter, helping the judo boy wearing 柔道着.I have a black belt (黒帯) and so I helped him wear black belt!!-------------------------------------------------------Next, I showed サンボ着 again.サンボ着 looks similar to 柔道着, but サンボ着 has severaldifferences from 柔道着.I found a relatively big boy who sat close to me and so I askedhim to come to me and try サンボ着 on.While helping him wear サンボ着, I started to talkthe differences between サンボ着 and 柔道着.First, my サンボ着 is a red-blue reversible type. Now, about how to divide people in two colors:In Japan, we tend to divide people in a white team and a red team(紅白).紅白歌合戦 is a good example. This comes from 源平合戦.Or sometimes we use black and white. But in case of wrestling, boxing and sambo,we use red and blue.Why???--- People in the word have different perspectives or images toward colors.◎ We, Japanese see the white color as pureness, finenessor something like that. On the other hand, western peoplesee the blue color as pureness and fineness. That's why European countries insisted that blue-colored柔道着 should be used and now in an international championships, they use white 柔道着 and blue 柔道着.Different from 柔道着, サンボ着 has a belt loopon both sides.*サンボ着には、帯を通す穴があります。These belt loops are designed not to let 帯get loose and fall down. When we watch 柔道の試合, we sometimes notice thata wrestler's 帯 become loose and falls down and the judge calls[待て]. This is really waste of time. The belt loops attached on サンボ着 preventa sambo match from becoming non-smooth and aim tomake the match go more smoothly and briskly. Feb. 21st Ladies and Gentlemen, Do you know I'm a 「賛美人」? Let me start my diary with humor--it's like a pun.But I love this name [賛美人]. Yes! I am the 賛美人. I do sambo, Russian style of wrestling and athletes whodo this grappling are called sambist(賛美人).What a charming nickname it is!! Sambo is very similar to Judo.We can say that sambo is just like a brother-in-lawof Judo. It may be right. Seemingly they are very similarto each other in their costumes, throwing techniques, controlling techniques, submission hold-techniques, and so on.But there are so many differences between them. One of the things I can say about sambo is that this sporthas less limitations than Judo and so it is really fun. Unfortunately, I've not enjoyed this grappling sportdue to my poor condition, my extreme busy work, etc.But as a semi-active sambist, I would like to get back tothe mat as a strong sambist. Let me introduce you about my small achievementsin this Russian martial arts: In 1993, I won the bronze medal (took the third place)in Aichi Pref. Sambo Championship. In 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996, I took part in All Japan SamboChampionships(全日本サンボ選手権), even though I lost at an early stage each time. Besides, I joined 全日本コンバットレスリング選手権大会as the representative of Fukuoka Pref. in 1993-1996. In the first half of this year, I would like to lose weightdown to at least 58kg at which I weighed when I took part in -60kg category at the competitions.I want to recondition myself and would like to join全日本選手権 to be held this summer. When I join major championships or competitionsin Tokyo, please come and cheer me up there. Many people think that Sambo is an unauthorizedbranch which occurred in the development of Judo. But this idea is 100% wrong. -------------------------------------------Today I visited 宮野小学校 as a guest teacherwho is supposed to introduce foreign cultures tostudents of 5th and 6th grades. Originally I had been asked to talk about foreign culture andcultural differences between Japan and Russian or othercountries. So, I decided to talk about sambo, one of the well-knownRussian cultures. I went to the school by motor bike.It was a really nice trip to visit there by motor bikeunder the blue sky and warm weather like today. It took me about one hour to get there from my apartmentin Namazuta, Iizuka. On my way home, I passed by 小次郎の里 where I saw some shopsalong the road. Who is 小次郎? I know about a legend that 佐々木巌流 stopped over嘉穂町 for have a training camp of 剣道 for a while. At the same time, he brought seeds of persimmons thereto be planted. Local farmers in this town grow 小次郎柿, namedafter him. 佐々木巌流 was one of the Sasakis, a school orgroup of Buddhist monks practicing in mountains(山伏), especiallyMt. Hiko (英彦山).Many people think that 佐々木巌流 came from越前 or 岩国, but this is fiction.----------------------------------------------------- Just when I arrived at the school, I saw a car getting into thegate and a young gentleman getting out of the car.He was Mr. Edward, a postgraduate student at 九州大学.He is a nice and gentle guy. He is really easy to talk to. At 10:40, we were invited to the library where we saw about 26 studentssitting at the table and waiting for us.Mr. Edward was the first speaker. He's from ウラル地方 and then began to introduce where he was from, what part of Russia he was from, how people live in Russia depending onseasons, etc. It was very interesting. He talked mainly about how people in his country live andabout geographic characterizes, introducing some stories or showing beautiful pictures.**I will report the details about his story later. Mr. Edward talked for 40 min. Then, I became the second speaker. (to be continued)----------------------------------------------- Ken

Today I'd like to talk to you about some interesting thingswhich have happened to me. 1) I'm supposed to visit Miyano Elementary School inKaho-machi tomorrow. Going to teach English to them? No. No English tomorrow(, but I might have a shortEnglish practice with school children if I have an opportunitytomorrow.) Tomorrow I, together with a student who is from Russia, willvisit the school and introduce the relationships or differencesbetween Japan and neighboring countries like Russia, Korea, China and others. The Russian student, who studies at Kyushu Univ. is goingto talk about his country, showing picture cards and otherthings. I will talk to the 5th and 6th graders about the national sport in Russia -sambo-, the differences and similarities between sambo and judo from the viewpoint of cultural differences. Then, I will introduce some basic expressions in Chinese and Korean languages. The guy and I have been registered in a program called"Let's Look at the World from a classroom", designed topromote an international friendship. Last week, I had a sudden call from Fukuoka PrefecturalOffice(福岡県庁), which manages the project which asked me to visit the school together with the Russian guy. It was a really sudden call, but I willingly accepted the request. Guys, please look forward to the report I will show you tomorrow.I am also looking forward to seeing students and introducingsambo to them. This is the very first time for me to visita local school to talk about sambo, even though I have visitedmany local schools to teach English so far though. 2) As you know, I have started a new translation service. The other day, I introduced you this service, picking outsome translation samples:One of the samples goes as follows:「幸せになるために生まれてきたんだから好きなことをやっていきなさい」 I got this message from a pupil of mine who lives in Houfu, Yamaguchi. A couple of days later, one of my deshis, who married last year, asked me whether I took the above message from a song.I was not so familiar with where this message came from and soI sent her question to the pupil in Yamaguchi. He said that he took the message from one of the songsby TAMAKI, Koji. He said that this song was not so popular implyingthat the deshi was supposed to be a real fan of TAMAKI, Koji.As soon as I received this message, I transferred this messageto the deshi. Later, she sent me an e-mail that she was a big fan of the singerfor many years. She became one of his fans when she was in herelementary school days. When she was a junior high schooler, one of her friends was one of his fans, too. Then, according to her story, she met another a deep fan of the singerthree years ago. It was her husband. Anyway, I hear that the pupil and the deshi began to exchangee-mails as big fans of the singer. Interesting story, isn't it??-----------------------------By the way, it is important to have something in common withour own future mate. As for me, I am a great fan of ATSUMI, Kiyoshi(渥美清), a great actorKANO,Kaori(かの香織), a skillful singer, and OGAWA, Tamaki(緒川たまき),a wonderful actress.I like judo, sambo and wrestling. I am just wondering who iswilling to share with me a good time to talk about them. ------------------------------------Ken Suetsugu

○Sunday. Feb. 19th This morning I found an interesting article about English educationat an elementary school.I have already made 30 copies of it and so I will send them toyou (correspondence students) all later by post. Iizuka City, where I live, is surrounded by several towns such asHonami, Sasaguri, Shonai, etc.Kaita Town is one of them and the town has been receivingmuch attention probably from all over Japan or at leastall the municipalities in Fukuoka Pref including Chikuho District. The town has been designated as one of the few English Education promotingtowns here in Japan. So the town started English education at elementaryschool as a regular subject. Last Sunday, Feb. 12th, the elementary school had an open classand they invited parents, teachers from other school and the pressto their English class. I actually wanted to go and see the class, but I had a previous appointment and I had to give it up. As for the details, please refer to the copy of the articleyou will receive from me soon. As for English education at a grade school, I am 100% against it.I don't think that even if children start to learn English at an elementaryschool or at a much earlier stage, they won't be able to speak Englishas well as their parents (especially their mothers) expect. How to communicate should be more addressed in the elementaryschool education, I think. I will talk about this later.----------------------------------------------------------------- Ken

I teach a textbook to them. I teach English using a textbook. 他には、I use a textbook and teach English to them. How long haven't you met her? How long have you both been separated? とかHow long have you been away from her? She lives along the road which I take to the factory. That student greeted his teacher without honesty(sincerity). I wrote my report without consideration. thinking carefully. When we argue, I always lose. is a better negotiator than--. ⇒When I was checking if my lottery bills won or not, I got excited very much. I was close. The number of my own was one-digit different from the prize-winning one.-------------------------------------4)『危うく~』・・・「あまりの眠さに、危うく事故を起こすところだった」★この情報も英語で言う場合は、時間の順番、時系列の順番に言っていきます。でないと、聞き手には何の事やらわからない場合が発生するからです⇒I felt sleepy while driving the other day, and I almost caused a car crash.★[危うく~するところだった]とか、「あと少しで~するところだった」と言う場合は、almost が対応しますね。 うっかり忘れるとこでした⇒I almost forgot it. I almost missed my train this morning. I almost passed the exam. The bottom line was 50 points. But I got 47 points and so I almost passed. I failed the test by only three points. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー5)『至難のワザ』[自分の気持ちを言葉で正確に相手に伝えるのは、至難の技である」⇒We (may) need a special skill to make ourselves 100% understood only by words. It must be (one of the) tough(est) things) to make--でも◎OKですね!! ken

I don't want my school to (come to) know I do a part-time job. I don't answer an unidentified call. a strange call. an unknown call. (I think) the important thing is to (try to) find the answer together with students. I came to know how women, who cannot have a body, feel. You'll find many levels of teachers: from excellent ones to terrible ones.「幸せになるために生まれてきたんだから好きなことをやっていきなさい」Everybody is born to have a happy life. You have the right to do whateverintrigues you.「KENの*すばらしい英訳を見て毎日、目から鱗が落ちています」I've come to know how English should be through Ken's *professionaltranslation.*日本語の力がつきますと、素晴らしい、というのは、プロフェっショナルと同義であると、考えられる事が可能になります。ken

◎ Mon. Feb. 13th Today, I had four English lessons.I have a translation lesson with my fellow translatorin the morning and then three English lessons with new students(English learners) of mine every Monday. 1) In an English lesson with a new student at 11:00,we are going to practice pronunciation mainly.Today I gave her a DVD of Gershwin and I hopeshe will enjoy the film. 2) In another English lesson at 1:00 p.m.we are going to practice English conversationand I am going to train her in other aspectsof English command, too. 3) In the other English lesson at 5:00 p.m.we are going to learn comprehensive aspectsof English command including pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, grammar, translation, etc. This student is also a Kaho-Higashi graduate. She is keen in learning English and it is a great thing. Basically, I have these three lessons only in English, but sometimes I have to use Japanese for explanation porpuse. As you may know, my English lesson costs you just 1,000yenper time.(4000 or 5,000 yen a month). It's very reasonable. When I let new comers know this fee, they are all surprised. Usually if we find that price of somethingis very low, we tend to have doubt about its qualityor reliability, wondering there must be something hiddenbehind the low price. But IN MY CASE, NO STRING ATTACHED.(私の場合は、何か裏がある訳がない) Why so reasonable?-- To have English lessons with students in English is a very good training for myself. That's why. \1,000 per time never pays.I believe that it is very important for me to experiencethe very profit-limited state of my activity or life on purpose. This suffering will surely give me a power and strategy to survive and improve myself in the long run. I am going along the way against Mr. Horie.---------------------------------------------Today I had two surprises with one of the new studentsI share the time with. The lady at the 1:00p.m. student turned out to be thefirst person who was able to understand almost 95%the punch line of the three cartoons, PEANUTS, I showed her. Whenever I meet new students or potential students,I show the cartoons. None of them was not able tounderstand the punch line correctly. But she did.I got surprised. Another surprise was that she sometimes writes toreaders' column of news papers. As I sometimes recommend you, writing logically to papersmust be one of the most practical English trainings.I recommended one of my deshi to do this, and thenshe sometimes did. But, the new student is the first personwho did that activity for herself. I got amazed at her.She is in the right orbit in the way of English training. I wish my three deshis would do this for themselves.Writing to papers are good resources for making small money. Writing is very important, although many people put an importancemore on speaking. But the writing is the base for speaking. If we write something about an event or something,we are surely able to say comment about that whenwe are asked for it. Then, writing our own commentlogically is a great part of our own English command. [This is one of my reasons I keep diary in English now.] Judging from these surprises, I think she will gethigher English command in coming years. --------------------------------------------Ken

I'm going to write my own diary twice today:In this Diary, Part 1, I would like to write about my own big problem, which is of private nature and may interest all of you. The other day, one of my part-timers, named Hiromi-chan,asked me this question: "Ken, why don't you get married?"She sometimes repeats this question. ---'Why don't I get married?' ★ I have several reasons for this questions: 1) Originally I had an idea that I would try harder to get married AFTER I move to and re-settle in Tokyo again. I had this idea until a couple of months ago. I stayed in Iizuka "just temporarily" so far, not "permanently" until two or three months ago. ★ Now, the situation may have changed. I would like to train the deshi of mine to be a pro-English speaker in the future, and until then I am going to stay here. 2) Some people say that I have few encounters with ladies. This is WRONG. In encounter-wise, I have had so many encounters with ladies including younger ones and young ones so far. I have so many encounters, especially mainly through my English seminars, English courses, and other opportunities related to English. Unfortunately, however, I have a strong self-disciplining principle that I shall not feel or have love toward any female students. 【I always think that if I fall deeply in love with any of my female students and date with her, my English command will be sure to fall or get deteriorated.】 To tell the truth, my personal feeling and this self-principle go against each other and this makes me worry a lot. I don't know why, but I have more female students. Among them, I sometimes meet a lady who is my types, in fact, if I honestly speak to you. I am not a perfect person and very often affected by earthy desires, then I sometimes think that such a lady is my type and want to date with the lady. But this is against my own self- principle.I have to give up having love toward the lady in the end. I have suffered from this self-contradiction several times so far, for example, when I had English lessons with M-san, A-san etc. Actually there is one lady who is my type now, but it's a great pity that I am forced to giver up having love toward her. I have worried about this problem and it has been tough to accept a fact that I have to give her up as my love-target. But I have to accept this fact, even though I am ready to make her very happy, no, not very happy, but the happiest on earth. Sometimes, I try to talk to ladies on the street or other placesfor new encounter with ladies. You may call this ナンパ(lady-hunting). I've got to do this to finda suitable lady outside my English course. I used to do this activity when I was in the 20s and very slim witha better appearance, especially at discos or clubs.I used to enjoy dancing cheek-to-cheek or hip-hop dancing with my young ladies in those days, trying to hunt them. Last week I had a happy talk with a very wonderful & charming lady over coffee. Many of my friends and elder students recommended meto keep the lady, and I think so too. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm not a very good man and.Something must be wrong with me especially in communicationwith ladies, especially with young ladies. Otherwise, I would be really more popular among ladies with more good opportunities to date someone or marry someone without trying hard.------------------------------------------------------------Ken Suetsugu

◎Sat. Feb. 10th---Part2 As some of you know, I put an ad(広告) for more studentslate January, and then 4 ladies began to takemy English course (as of Feb.11th) as the result of the ad.Now I am really pleased to know that all of themare very enthusiastic(熱意がある) about learning English. In the morning on Feb. 10th, I met with a verycharming lady I came to think I'd like to keepa very good relation with from now on.The meeting with this lady will probably have a great impact on my entire life.(私の人生に大きな効果をもたらすかもしれません) Then, feeling a great satisfaction, which I did notexperience for a long time, I came home just around 11:00 in the morning. I had to have a trial lesson with a lady at 11:15. I was just wondering what kind of person shewould be. I had talked with her on the phone andexchanged some e-mails before this day.Seemed to me that she was very eager to learn English harder. So I had a good expectation before I met her.And actually she was a very eager, keen and enthusiasticin learning English. I was really delighted at this. I also found that she finished the same high schoolas mine, 嘉穂東高校(she took its English Course) and then finished a university in Nagasaki. That university is the one which one of my young students studies at now. Whenever I have an English lesson with a highly-driven person, I feel happy very much. I had a very good timein the trial lesson with her.Thanks.She decided to take my course, and then I will giveher very good English lessons. I speak only in Englishwith her, I've determined. By the way, this lady and another lady I met in the morningare both from 金田町. I have another fellow English learnerwho lives in the town. Changing the subject, I sometimes feel a certain differencesbetween young students and adult students. When I have English lessons with adults,I feel it very comfortable to talk with them either in Englishor Japanese. Because they are eager to communicate with me orother people. Plus they already know through their social experiencesthat it is very important to develop the communication or conversationwith other people. In other words, they willingly talk about things they experienceor they are committed to in order to develop the conversationor friendly relationship. On the contrary, when I have English lessons with young students(some of college students, high schoolers), I sometimes, not often, feel it very difficult or tiring to talk with them regardless of the languages. This is what I have worried too much about those young people for several months. Then I was always wondering why. But I've got a clue to understand why through the meeting with thelady in the morning on Feb. 10th.Young students are just young. That's all. They have little social experience and so actually they don't know the importance of cooperative communication with adult people. In a way, they might be "selfish" in terms of interactive communication. For example, when I ask them one or two questions to try to develop the conversation, they don't answer or they fall silent. It has been a big problem to me and the cause I begin to feel blue.On the other hand, adult students would give me good repliesto my questions to try to develop the conversation into goodcommunication. So, if you, young students under 20, want to continue to take English course also in the future, you are requested to be more outspoken, talkative and cooperative in communication with me. Otherwise, I might have a really hard time in developing the conversation. But I am sure that you will improve yourself in communication afteryou turn 22 or 23 years old. At that time, you will be able toreally fully understand what I am now writing here.It will be too late, I'm afraid, if you ingore my advice now and then you end up in remorsing it after you turn 22 or 23. This is what I think now.If I am wrong, please do not hesitate to correct me.Plus your comment of any nature will be appreciated.

Ken's Diary◎ Friday, Feb. 10thGuys, have you felt any breath of spring??--I have.Today I felt a sign, though it was slight, of springnamed "love-new love".This morning I met with a lady I mentioned inmy previous diary, then I had a really wonderfultime with her. We got together at a cafe in a localhotel. We talked a lot of things ranging from English, variations of English such as Spanglish(combination betweenEnglish and Spanish), problems by single 40years-old woman,to professional wrestling. Lots of topics in about 50 minutes.Anyway, we had a really nice talk and she has a very humorousway of speech which made me break into laugh many times!!!!I enjoyed this get-together.I got amazed at her. How charming she was!!!Then, it was very cozy or comfortable for me totalk with her. Probably she also felt the same way. This lady is smart, interesting, charming and knowshow the communication should be.Plus, she loves 格闘技 and so I have lots of thingsin common with her.One of my love advisers recommended me to take care of this new relationship and develop the friendship. Yes, this advice is what I am thinking now. This get-together with her, hopefully will open a doorto a new love for me.I would like to try my best to develop this potentialityinto my real, long-awaited love. After she returns from her business trip,we probably go to the theater as a date.As you may know, I have worried about love for these several months. This love is an impossible one, if I dare to say.So I had a hard or tough time in trying hard to turn the impossiblelove into a potential love. But the new love will surelybring me a new opportunity. Please give me hurrahs.Ken

◎Thu. Feb. 9thI had an English lesson with a high school girl in the morning. She's a third year student and so, this time of a year, she just has to go to school once a week until her graduationceremony.I practiced with her English pronunciation. In the afternoon, I went to Iizuka the First Junior High Schoolto teach shogi to its first-year students.I, together with two gentlemen, one of them is a famoussoroban instructor and another is a famous shogi armatureplayer, were invited to the school. The soroban instructor was one of those who I respect.Kindly he called me and invited me to join them. This time of a year, the junior high school has a specialcurriculum titled "Let's learn with local experts" invitingtennis players, dancers, artists and shogi instructorsto the school as guest teachers.Actually I wanted the school to invite me as an Englishexpert, but they did not have a section for it.We had 24 students in the shogi course. After short speeches of us, the students pairedto play shogi. At first, we let them the students play shogiwith their mates and sometimes advised them, especiallybeginners, how to make a good move according to the situation. After the first game finished, some of the students asked meto play shogi with them. So, I played shogi with them.Actually none of the students were so strong, but I foundsome of them were stronger than others, and then I startedto teach them my own favorite strategy(戦法) called筋違い角(please refer to http://6630.teacup.com/fuku6340/bbsfor details of this strategy)If you learn this 戦法, I guarantee that you can beatyour fathers or grandfathers or anyone who plays shogi.Whenever I taught how to use this strategy to students, they were all amazed at its systematic trap and development. It was really fun for me this day.-----------------------------Ken

A few days ago, I re-determined to be just myself this year.My fellow English learners* will not be affected bythis re-determination unless they are lazy in learning English.*By the way, I don't want to use the word, students or pupils anymore.I do want to keep myself on the same position as you are.I don't want to be in a upper position as an English instructor, instead, I would like to be very friendly to you all. That's why I don't want to use the word anymore. What does it mean by being just myself, especiallyin my English courses(face-to-face lesson and correspondencecourse). It's simple.I continue to give you a hard and strict English lessons as I used to do.★以下の事は対面授業の受講者の方にむしろ当てはまります。 The following matter is applied more to face-to-face English coursefellows. If I find any of you lazy or short of the daily English traininghe/she has to do, or if any of you don't try to correct orimprove your weak point I mentioned, I will say good-bye to the guy.Probably I will do this, even if the person is one of my deshisor old students.Because, I have noticed that some of my fellow English learnersdon't practice as told or don't try to correct their weak pointswhich I pointed out before. At first, I didn't have any intention to do such kind of thingthis year. But I had a second thought that if I am not so severein my English lessons, my fellows won't improve themselves.Sorry for this second thought, but I promise to offer youvery good English lessons from today on. I promise.I also promise that if you try harder in learning English andmake it in improving, I will give you good opportunities asreward.Ken

Today when I was rearranging letters or other kinds ofdocuments, I found some letters and printed e-mailsfrom my ex-student.She is Asuka. She went to the USA after her high school. When I saw her for the first time about 8 years ago,I got stunned (again) at how cute she was. Then, at that time I came to know she wanted tostudy in the States and offered English lessons beforeher departure.Asuka is one of my unforgettable students or ladiesI love(ed). She has been the tops among the ladiesI ever met. I once enjoyed driving with her.One day she said that she wanted to buy something Japanesefor her host family. So I proposed her to buy Hakata Dolls, since one of my customers is a Hakata Doll manufacturer. Then I rent a car and drove her to Hakata Doll manufacturerlocated in Sawara-ku, Fukuoka. It was the first drivingwith a high school lady. So I was very happy about this at that time.(I NEVER suffer from Lolita Complex. Pleas don't get me wrong.l)After she went to the States, I got her e-mails.One day she said that she had a steady boyfriend in USA.That was a Japanese guy! Then, I replied "I was shocked at it."Since then, I had no e-mails or letters from her.I shouldn't have replied like that. Now I am tring to get in touch with her.She is now around 25, I suppose.Ken

<Feb. 6th>In the evening of this day, I talked with a friend of mineover the phone. This lady is nicknamed Nobu-chan.She advised me to try to find a lady which is closer to my age,if I want to date with someone. She's got a point. In a way, she is right. It is true that, however, Coincidentally, while I was talking on the phone,I got an e-mail from a lady who is originally from Tagawaand has been asking me to have a chat over coffeesomewhere in Iizuka. Nobu-chan and I were just talkingabout this lady. This lady also has been asking me togo to the movies someday when it is convenient for both of us.This lady is open-mined, very active and charming. She once came to take my free seminar last Decemberand at that time I saw him for the first time.Seemed to me that she and I had a good chemistry.(呼吸が合う様に感じた)Anyway, we will meet again this Friday to have a talkover coffee before she leaves for Kumamoto on business. To try to be good friends isn't bad, is it? --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---By the way, Nobu-chan and I have been getting along wellfor almost eight years. At first, we were not able to communicateat all due to generation gap. Now we are good friends. She is 10 years younger than I. She is one of my good part-timers.She knows everything about me.--------------------------------------------------I am so sorry to my face-to-face lesson students. This day, I decided not to hold the New Year's Partydue to several reasons after a long consideration.Honestly speaking, I have little intention to hold a large-scale party anymore now, except for small-sized meetings.By the way, I am planning to have an English seminarin collaboration with one of my students sometime soon inthe future. Details will be unveiled later.-------------------------------------------------Ken Suetsugu

◎Monday, Feb. 6th ★雪の朝と 10年来していない事★I didn't know that it had been snowing for several hours alreadywhen I woke up. Until a decade ago, I used to go up a local mountainknown as Mt. Fukuchi(its peak is about 900m high) wheneverit snowed. The mountain would be decorated with pure whitewaist-deep snow (腰くらいまでの雪)on a snowy day. I have not conqueredthe mountain for these ten years. Unbelievable!!I do wanna spare an enough time to go up the mountainas soon as possible. ★反省⇒末次流の発揮を!!★Watching snow, I reflected on what have done for these 70 dayssince the start of 2006. (元旦からの70日を反省した)I found out that I was out of my elements (本領を発揮していない)for these 70 days and greatly affected by something like stress. This morning, I determined to show myself at the best in any fieldsI am committed to.(関わっている分野で末次流を発揮するべく決意した)When I made such determination, I felt as if I had been able tofind out a stream of light ahead of me in the pitch-dark tunnel. I think I am a lone wolf. I don't like to work with many people.I like to be just myself. According to "Animal Characters' Category"(動物占い),I am in WOLF, especially Friendly Wolf(好感の持てる狼).This classification is correst as for me. As a lone wolf, I do wanna be a legendary ninja named In a story, he was full of energy, tactics, strategies, ideas, innovations negotiation skills and logical way of thinking. He was so excellent single ninja that he could make a small-sized castle surrender with ease. ★Please refer to the following URL for your better understandinghttp://6630.teacup.com/fuku6340/bbs↑「二刀一流」この掲示板をご活用ください。匿名で英語に関する質問等してくださいね ★新規の受講者★From this week, I have four new students who had a trial lessonlast week and decided to take my course.I am pleased very much. As I mentioned before here,I need a little more students while I try to shift my main businessfrom document translation into oral translation.(業務の中心を翻訳から通訳に変える間)I think I keep my English training severe and hard for them. ★破門の条件★For example, if anyone of my new or exisiting students fails to keep practicing Enlish on a daily basis, I will get him or her out ofmy school. Any execuse won't work with me.(どんな言い訳も通じません) For instance, even if you are an old face in my English course butfail to do your own daily training or other daily training of EnglishI recommend you to do, you will be out of the course regardlesshow many years you have taken my course.(年数に関係なく破門する)Only daily self-training makes you improve. I just help you improve. This year I will use jazz songs and movies more in my lessons to get my students exposed to real strong, powerful and rhythmical English. ★ビジネス英語研修★By the way, what field of English do you like best?In my case, Business English is my bag.I would like to start teaching business English to local companies.I also would like to teach logical Japanese to them.If you happen to have any info about a local company which might beinterested in the in-house English or Japanese training, please let me know. ◎ Sun, Feb. 5th.I still have a sore throat and a little fever.I have a cold, even it is slight. That's why I didn't go tothe party last night. I didn't want others to catch it.Just it.----------------------------------------I am holding a new years' party next Saturday.I, together with participants must be looking forward to it.But this shin-nen-kai might be the last. This is because it has been very tough for me to coordinateeverything whenever I plan to hold this kind of get-together.I intend to have get-together of smaller scale, but large-scalegathering might be the last this time.I just wanted to share the gathering with all of my students 100% out of my goodwill. But there are so many different perspectives which I feel sickand tired of.-----------------------------------Today I had four English lessons.Three in the afternoon and one in the evening. After that I spent several hours in doing 添削.When you try to learn English, you should focus onone thing, not many kinds of things.一点集中主義 is the name of the game.決め手-------------------------------------By the way, one of my students who is a college student hasalready her spring vacation. I envy her, because she has two month-long vacation!!-------------------------------------Today is the birthday of one of my students. So, I decided to send her a basket of flowers, using Flower CupidService. I hope she loves it.---------------------------------Ken

◎ Saturday, Feb. 4thAs I said to you before in my previous e-mails,every Saturday is packed with English lessons. This morning I had to cancel the first English lesson with alocal elementary school teacher due to my cold.I had a fever and a sore throat. But I had four Englishlessons afterwards.I also did a translation work for one of my customers. The company is in the medical field and always developsnew products. Today I translated new product informationfrom Japanese into English.Today I was invited to a dinner party which was held nearmy apartment. But I determined not to join it.This is not because I had a cold, but I thought I should NOT bewith other guests. I am very sorry that I can't describe the detailsof this matter. But I thought like that.I am now thinking of doing something new or innovativeto change things.Today I found an article in a local paper, Nishi-Nippon Shimbunwhich wrote about 佐々木小次郎(佐々木巌流).There are several theories about where he was originally from. Some say that he was originally from 越前, the current 福井Pref. Others say that he was from 岩国.But they are wrong according to my research.I have studied about that for several years, and I think he wasa member of the Sasakis(佐々木一族) who controlled 岩石城.He must have been from Tagawa. He was hired by Hosokawa Clanas his strategic and fencing instructor, but he tried to give too muchinfluenceon the politics of the Clan. So the Hosokawas attempted to murder himin a form of dual between two swordsmen; 巌流 and 武蔵.However, 武蔵 did not know the background of this duel andcame to Kokura as a normal duel as a swordsman. I am very happy today.Today one of my part-timers, Hiromi-chan joined me in the evening, when I went to a workshop of my students. They are a couple and artists. As soon as she arrived there and saw me, she said that she passedthe employment exam and got a job at a nursery school locatedin Kaho Town, about 30 min drive away from Namazuta. Today I tried a new style of English lesson.I asked Hiromi-chan to ask questions in English and talk with the couple in English. Why Hiromi-chan? I have got used to the placeand the couple too much. So, they need, I thought, to try todevelop a fresh conversation with someone new who has a differentperspective from mine. She asked them several questions to them in English. If the couple had a hard time in answering in English,I helped and taught them how to say things in English. The room where we study English together is decoratedwith many pictures and works. One of them caught her attention and she asked the artisthow much it would cost. The work is an iron-made decorationwith the noon on the top.It costs 65,000 yen. At the end of the lesson, she asked meto buy the work for her as a present commemorating her employment.I wish she would have been joking. The couple has three kids. The youngest is an infant.Hiromi-chan would like to see and play with the infant sometimesoon in the future. She's cute and has a very unique perspective and that's what intrigues about her. After the lesson, we went back to my apartment. Then, I had an English lesson with a new potential student.I mean this was a trial lesson. She is a young nurse and would like to stay in other countries, using working holiday visa. She had a good pronunciation, better than I had expected. Speaking of Hiromi-chan, by the way, she has been one of mypart-timers for about 5 years. We had a harsh argument several timesin the course of our work relationship and then experienced lots of thingsso far. But now we have developed a very good and firm relationship aftergetting over the conflicts. Almost all of my current part-times have been working for me for at least 5 years. Don't you think it is amazing? When I ask people for part-time job, I always try to let themuse their own original talent or capacity and make the best use of it.For example, if you are good at handwriting, I ask you for writing addresseson the envelope or something to make letters or DM.------------------------------------KEN

How many younger sisters do you have? How many elder sisters do you have Are you the second dauther? I'm the third dauther. Are you the first dauther? でも-- the second dauther? Shiitake mushroom is good for health and available at low price.Shiitake mushroom is full of benefits. Ken

There are many things I like or I love in this world.Sex or "make love" is one of them. Not one of them, but the tops.I like making love with a lady I love. Nobody doubts that every person likes sex regardless of gender. In fact, I used to be a professional in this field for your reference.Even I have a strong sexual desire. So, younger people must have astronger desire to sex with person they love. Especially young menwant to sex with a lady they love everyday or all day long.I don't blame them for that strong desire, but I just want themto treat their young ladies very gently and kindly.Plus, I want young ladies to treat themselves properly, I mean thatI don't want them to give up themselves for men easily. To be continued-----------------Ken

◎ Wed. February 1st As I had expected, I felt very tired this morning, sufferingfrom the sore throat.Gosh, I have to cure this sore throat. Otherwise, I willhave to develop a cold and give up a few days during which I have to work on translation. I took medicine early in the morningand then had some sleep. I got up around 9:00 again and started some work. However, I had a sudden visit of a friend of mine.I had to spend several hours with her, teaching her English. During lunch time, we went to a Chinese restaurant and atespicy dishes to make myself perspire to improve my condition. In the evening, I had an English lesson with the deshi. This regular lesson is the one I could not miss.Even if I am seriously ill in bed or in a critical condition, I shall dothis lesson with the deshi. I've determined to give her all what I'vegot(持っているものを全て授けるつもり). Why am I so involved in her? Because she IS my deshi, notjust a student. If she's just a student, I wouldn't give hersuch commitment. (単なる受講者であればここまでしません)I just just want her to become a splendid pro-English communicator. No other strings attached to my desire of this.(他に裏はありません)This is the same thing I did for other deshis of mine, and they madea success. (弟子と考えている方には同じように取り組んでおり、皆、上手く成長しました) After the lesson, I felt very chilly and I ate udon before going to bed. Ken Suetsugu
