【Determination】
◎ Fri. Mar. 31st 【Determination】This morning I made up my mind about something,which I have been worring for a long time, after a verylong time of consideration.As I mentioned in my diary several times, I lovesomeone who almost all of you don't know she is, but I've decided to completely give up this person in terms oflove. It's 100% impossible. I should know this well.Instead, I am going to focus more and more on the womanI met with on Feb. 10th, or even if I fail to have a goodrelationship with this woman, I'm gonna focus on a womanwho is closer to me in age. It must be better for me.In fact, I e-mailed this woman yesterday, but no reply yet now.She's been very busy in moving from a place to a placegiving consultation to college students who would like tofind an employment. I hope to get a reply from her soon.It's taken me quite a long time, actually too long timeto make this decision.Now that I've determined like this, I wanna meet heras soon as possible to talk with each other.I want to express my sincere gratitude to those whoadvised me about this matter.-----------------------------------------------------Ken

March 30th 【INSPIRE】 Do you have any favorite English words????I have many favorite English words.They include turn, give, get,have, make, let,inspire, rise, take, work, pay, play...etc. "TURN" is a really functional word.If you learn how to use turn, you will get your Englishcommand higher. Among them, I love "inspire.""INSPIRE" means 【人の心に灯をともす】. As a translator and business promoter,I would like to offer excellent translation service, its related serviceand English instruction to the public. I want to encourage,inspire and make them feel happy all the time through myprofessional service. For this purpose, I have to prepareany possible inspiring service and make it ready all the time. If you run your own business, you have to inspire and/or make your customers feel comfortable and happy throughyour products and service. This is a very important principlein doing business and making your business survive.Just receiving orders and delivering products are not good enough.-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- This day, I visited Kyushu Mitsumi Co.,Ltd, a local manufacturerof electric parts and components to teach how to translateJapanese information into English. This company has many sections.My deshis and I deal with every section of this company. The company has Switch Engineering Section.This busy section trades with overseas companies and sothey need an English translator. No staff members can communicatein English well. A deshi of mine and I often receive translation orders. Last November, this section accepted a new worker.She's from a local outsourcing company and has been responsiblefor English communication and translation at the section since then. Last week I got an e-mail from her.Never did I expect any e-mail or call from Switch Sectionbecause I broke off the business relation with them due to some misunderstanding they had against me last December. She said she had hard times in translating Japanese-writtentechnical documents into English and asked me for help.So, I decided to visit the company and teach or advise her about the tips of technical translation. I visited the company around 5:00 p.m. and taught the staffmember several tips of translation.After the lesson, she said that she would like to take my lessons again if I was OK. This day I gave her this lesson as a part of after-sales service.The purpose of this lesson was to inspire this translator to dobetter job at Switch Section, which will surely benefit this companysometime in the future. Hopefully this benefit will bring something goodto me later. After this lesson at Mitsumi, I had another English lessonwith a new student. She also would like to work using English.She's one of the two new students who finished English Course of 嘉穂東高校. So she's my junior.This day I taught how to translate short instruction manuals.-- -- -- -- After this, I went to a local pub restaurant.This day I was supposed to treat Hiromi-chan and a student of minewho goes to 活水. Hiromi-chan is going to work as a full-timekindergarten teacher. I just wanted to celebrate her employment.She's cut out for handling infants and young children.So kindergarten teacher is her calling, I'm sure. ----------------------------------------------Ken Suetsugu

【Three English Lessons】
◎ Wed. Mar. 29th 【Three English Lessons】 Got up at 5:00 a.m.This day I wanted to finish checking and correctingall your e-mails of translations. But I failed to secure enoughtime to do so. I had three English lessons this day. First, I had an English lesson with one of my new students at 10:00.At the beginning of the lesson, I talked about our trip to Kyoto.During this trip, we came across many surprising things atan inn where we spent the second night.One of these surprises was that I had to go into and through other's room to enter my small/tiny room.I talked this to the student and she burst into laugh.I don't blame her for this. In the second lesson with one of my deshis (with whom I went toKyoto for her English training), I had a three hours long lesson.In the first two hours, I taught her how to pronounce English wordsand how to express things in English.In the another hour, we practiced how to make variationsof one basic English expressions. (I'll email you about this later.)This practice will help her teach English to junior high schoolersin her own classes. I had the third lesson with a college student.The above-mentioned deshi is also a college student.They are the same age. This college student goes to 活水大学in Nagasaki. I taught English pronunciation and how to catch Englishwords, sentences and meaning.She sometimes makes fun of me and so becomes a hot potato to me.

【Commitment to Inspire Her】
◎Tue. Mar 28th 【Commitment to Inspire Her】 Felt still tired after the trip to Kyoto and got up later than usual. Also felt blue about the fact that I had to, once and for all,give up something important for me. I had so many things to do on this day, even thoughthey were trifle matters. Right after I woke up in the morning, I had a phone call from a friend who lived in Oita.She said that she wondered if she should be here or not this day. It was her day-off this day.Sometimes she visits me and take English lessons from Oita.She drives from Oita to the place I live. It was stormy this day and so she concludedthat she wouldn't be here. But later, somethingchanged in her and she decided to come here.But I turned it down. I always appreciate her for her kindness.She is always open to me when I ask her for advice or help. In the afternoon, I had a two-hour long English lessonwith one of my disciples.In this lesson, I let her know my idea to inspireher much more in the way of English learning. For example, I'm gonna introduce her some translationwork and she's gonna experience business & private translation.If you start to do the translating for money, you'll surely be ableto raise your English command. I guarantee this.You'll also develop a stronger drive to learn English. In this lesson with the deshi, I made her try to translatea short business e-mail. This day I had several inquiries for oral translationand I was very pleased to have them. Plus, I had an inquiry from one of my ex-students.In fact, I had a talk with the mother of the student.I used to teach him about 7 years ago.I strongly remember the family. They are originally fromKagoshima and so the parents have a very strong accentof Kagoshima dialect. Even their kids have strong Kagoshimaaccent. At that time, I taught English to their son who wasa 6th grader. But now he's in the third year of a technicalcollege(高専). I have to accept a fact that time flies. （Ken's Office）

◎Mon. Mar. 27thThis day was one day after my (our) return from Kyoto.In the previous night, say, March. 26th, after I arrived at myapartment, I checked my e-mail box in my PC.I found lots of new e-mails.Two of them were from my correspondence studentswho we met in Kyoto on March. 25th.In the second day in Kyoto, I, together with my four students,met with the two students who lived in Kyoto.We had dinner altogether at a bread-based restaurant nearour inn. (*About this inn, ladies & gentlemen, please look forward to receiving my report sometime soon!!)I talked with them about love, my love, etc.The two students in Kyoto seemed to have a stronginterest in who the lady was!! --the one who I sometime mentioned in my own English diary.So when I sent them my reply, I told to themwho I really loved. After that, I received their replies.One of them gave me questions about it.Another gave me some hurrahs.Anyway, they both hoped that I would be able to find a good &suitable lady to marry. I really appreciate them for this point.Of course, I know well that my love of this will not bear fruitsand that I have to give up the lady and this love.In the morning I had an English lesson with one of my deshis.I introduced some businesses to him so that he would be able todo translation work with these companies.Now, we have had a problem of arrearage with one of the customers.That customer has failed to make the due payment to the deshisince last October.IT IS OUTRAGEOUS!!!!In the afternoon, I was very busy and had to go to many places.A camera shop was one of them. I asked them to get the negasdeveloped. I took many photos of my students talking to peoplefrom other countries. I will introduce some of them throughmy Blog and this diary.By the way, I will send you all some long reports about our 2nd tripto Kyoto. This second trip was a good trip all in all except for some matters to be improved.Ken

Have a Dream. Work hard for it and...
今日は、思うところがありまして、以下の講義をお送りします：私が一般に認められる通訳翻訳者になれましたのは何故でしょうか？――答えは簡単です：何よりも、「通訳翻訳者にどうしてもなりたい」という 以前からの気持ちを忘れなかったからです。これは、他の方たちもそうでしょう。例えば、イチロー選手も、良いプレーヤーになりたいと子供の時から思っていて、その気持ちを忘れていないからこそ、現在があるものだと思います。小さい頃に抱いた夢とか、物事をスタートした時に立てた目標を達成する事は難しい事ですが、夢とか目標は達成できるものです。それを忘れ去ることや、逃げる事さえしなければ。私は、ここまで紆余曲折がありました。かなりの遠回りをしております。ですが、どんな状況にあっても、夢は忘れる事がありませんでした。３０歳の頃に、何もかも嫌になって２年間英語に全く触れずに、英語から遠ざかっていた時がありました。そのころは、工場で働いておりましたが、この２年間のブランクの間でも、夢や目標（つまりいずれは通訳翻訳者へ）という考えは心の底に留めておりました。弊所の受講者の皆様も各々、希望や夢、目標があります。どうぞ、何年かかっても良いですからそうした目標は達成できる様に取り組まれて下さい。私は、立てた目標や夢を途中であきらめてしまう人は嫌いです。皆様におかれましてはどうぞ、頑張って、各々の夢や目標をいつまでも忘れずに取り組まれて下さい。Have a dream.Work hard for it andyour dream will come true.末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝

The Same -- As Yours の表現
私が英語独習方法として考案しました硬貨を用いての練習方法をご紹介します：お手持ちの硬貨を沢山出して以下の練習をしましょう：-----------------------------------------------★比較の表現 ＜the same -- as -＞の使い方 「私が持っている１０円玉と君の持っている１０円玉は 同じ大きさです」My 10-yen coin is as big as yours. 中学で学習する言い方ですね。これは、同じものを比較対象しております。この場合は、お互いの１０円玉ですね。したがって、your 10-yen coinとしなくてもyours と所有代名詞を使って言えますね。 ここで、「大きさ」「重さ」「色、形状」が相互に同じ場合に便利な言い方があります。 the same～as という言い方が便利です： 同じ大きさ：My 10-yen coin is the same size as yours. 同じ色：My 10-yen coin is the same color as yours. 同じ重さ：My 10-yen coin is the same weight as yours. 同じ直径：My 10-yen coin has the same diameter as yours. 同じギザギザ：My 10-yen coin has the same milled edge as yours. という風に言えます。 ★ same ですが、この単語はどんな場合に於いても 必ず、the を付けます。 the same と覚えて下さい ★ ちなみに、milled edgeとは、 硬貨にあるギザギザのことです。 これを応用して、⇒ I am surprized that I am the same age as your father! 「あんたのお父さんと同じ年ね！」という意味合いですね。 車の場合は、ageは年式という意味ですねYour car is the same age as mine. 君の車は俺のと同じ年式やね ビジネス、特に貿易などでよくありますが、当初のサンプル品と後から受け取る実際の商品が仕様や色が異なる場合があります。クレーム（complaint）の対象になりますね。 以下の文書はよく起こりがちな文章ですね。 「誠に残念ではありますが、当初の貴社サンプル品と 昨日受け取りました今回の商品は色が異なります」 "Dear Sirs， We received your products yesterday. ◎ Thu. Mar. 23rd I got up at 6: 30 this morning.I had an English with a local college student at 7:00 a.m.She studies at 活水女子大 in Nagasaki,majoring English,She stays with her parents during her spring vacation now.This morning, we practiced pronunciation. At 10:00, I had another English lesson with one of my deshis.She's also a college student, the same age as the abovestudent. For your reference, I'm gonna go to Kyoto with her,her sisters and another student of mine to letthem use English there. I started this lesson with Carpenters' song,"Top of the World". I sometimes use their songs, say,"Sing" "Yesterday Once More". Whenever I use their songs,especially "Yesterday Once More", I tend to shed tears.So, I cannot spend a long time in singing their songs in mylesson. In the afternoon, I went shopping to buy things and clothesfor a planned trip to Kyoto. After I came home, I got a good inquiry for new translationwork from a big organization.The volume of the documents to be translated seemsto be big and so I will ask two fellow translators for help. In the evening, I was supposed to have two lessonsand so I was waiting for them.One of them cancelled due to her work.Another sent me an e-mail later.She said she forgot mylesson.-------------------------------------------------Ken Suetsugu

BREAK
◎ Wed. Mar. 22nd In the morning, I had two English lessons.In the first lesson, I taught how to say things in English.I taught them several useful English expression.Plus, I showed them how to use "break".Break means "sudden change."For example, suppose you now see a thing as it is.Then, something happens to it and it changesits shape or property. This process means "break." Let me share with you all some good expressions:1) 転機 a (big) break Disappointed at that accident, I moved to Tokyo. It turned out to be a big break to me. 失望して上京したがそれが結局は大きな転機になりました 2) 故障 breakdown （動詞 break down） I was upset when my PC broke down. The PC was the last PC of mine to break down. まさか私のパソコンが壊れると思ってなかったので、 壊れた時はショックでした 3) 破局 breakup（動詞：break up） I broke up with Ms. K・・ on the day when an arsenic-using murder case happened in Wakayama 和歌山カレー事件の日に K さんとお別れました 4) 発生 breakout （動詞 break out） Bird flu broke out in Asian countries. 5) 突破口・糸口 breakthroughI finally found a tenichal breakthrough to getover this slump.ようやく、このスランプを脱すべく、問題を技術的に解決する糸口を見つけた。 6) 声変わりMy son's voice began to break.ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーSpeaking of 声、let me show you the following expressions: 1)マオの声は通りが良いMao' voice carries well. 2) 怖くて声も出なかったI was so frightened that my voice failed me.ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーIn the second lesson which started at 11:00 a.m.,we practiced how to translate TIME SHOCK's questions intoEnglish as quickly as possible.I introduced some of the techniques to her.She's an excellent English speaker. In the afternoon, I focused on technical translation.After four hours of translation, I had another two Englishlessons with my deshi and a highschooler respectively. In the lesson with my deshi, we sang two jazz songsto practice pronunciation and rythm of English.They were "Love Me or Leave Me" and "'S Wonderful.""Love Me or Leave Me" is a very fast song, and it is goodfor rhythm practice.----------------------------------------------------This day, I received an e-mail from a staff member who worksat a local company as an in-house translator.She works at a department with which I decided to break offthe business relationship due to their rudeness.I was surprised to receive her contact.The staff member is not an employee of this company.But she's a worker sent by a local outsourcing company.She says that she's responsible for English translation at thedepartment. But she has to translate technical documentsand has hard times in doing translation.So, other staff member at the department advised herto contact with me for any help.Her translation has lots of things to be improved.--------------------------------------------------------（Ken's Office）

硬貨活用英語練習テストのご案内
対面式、通信講座の受講者の皆様お世話になります。添削です。皆様のご存知の通り、硬貨や紙幣を用いての各種表現の練習を私は独自に編み出し、授業に取り入れております：既に、硬貨活用の英語表現練習帖を手作りですが作成し、配布、使用しております。受身、比較など、多種多様な表現が、お金を使って練習できます、そこで、弊所では、この硬貨活用の英語表現練習に関して、いわば「免許皆伝制」を実施したいと思います。希望者の方は、一通り一緒に練習し、その後、口頭テストとして、硬貨を使ったあらゆる表現を私の日本語の後に続いて通訳して貰います。その全部に於いて、スラスラと言えれば◎OKです硬貨の表現から色々と応用しますのでの表現形式をパタン化し、それを自在に応用できる事がこの稽古の目的です。例）「１０円玉は、１円玉の１０倍の価値です」A 10-yen coin is ten times bigger than a 1-yen coin in value.これを応用して「弊社の2005年度の売上は、10年前の3倍です」皆様、これをサッと英語でいえますか？？？100種類以上の英語の表現とその応用の全てをスラスラいえると免許皆伝です。免許皆伝だからといって、何かもらえるわけではありませんが、良い練習になると思います。ご希望の方には、4月はひと月、これを実施し、連休後にテストをします。ご希望者はご連絡ください末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝

Shoulder Separation
◎ Tue. Mar. 21st. This day was a national holiday named the Spring Equinox(春分の日).This day, 11years ago, (11年前の今日は)I joined a national wrestling championship.It was called "National Combat Wrestling Championship"At that time, I weighed 52kg, but now.. I weighed ・・・・. 7 years ago, I had shoulder separation in my judo match.The first aid treatment(応急処置) right after the separationwas pretty good, On the following day, I went to a hospital where I took medical treatment from an occupational therapist who was my school mate. It was a wrong treatment.My shoulder separation was badly treated.The separated bones and muscles around them are combined now,but the muscles have been too tightly contracted(過度の硬直）,which's resulted in smaller range of movement of my left shoulder.（その為、左肩の稼動範囲が小さくなっている）. Even now, I have a little hard time in trying to pull down a stringhung from the ceiling light to turn it off with my left hand. This condition has discouraged me to do exercise everyday,although I used to jog and other physical training everyday. This day I had two English lessons in the morning.After that, I glued myself to TV. I enjoyed the final gameof World Baseball Classic between Japan and Cuba. From this day on, I started to give a special English trainingto a high school student, while she has her spring vacation. ◎発音について◎
3月19日の飯塚での「合同英語練習会」で若干触れた事を少し詳しく説明します：ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー 日本人が、「私」という場合はWA/TA/SHI ワ タ シ という風に 母音と子音を同時に発生します。 ですが、外国人（英語のネイティブ）が「私」 という場合は、＜わ・た～し＞ という風に１）間延びし、また ２）強弱のリズムが生じます： 英語には、強・弱のリズムがあります。 さて、何故、間延びするかといえばネイティブは、音を発する感じとして、（連続して）個々のモジを各々、発音している為です。 WA/TA/SHI ⇒日本人の発音わ・ た ・ し W/A/T/A/SH/I ⇒ネイティブの発音 ワ た～～し 1) Ｗの音を出して２）Aの音を出します３）Tの音を出して４）Aの音を出します５）SHの音を出して６）Iの音を出します。 この６つの工程を連続して行います。個々の音を出していくのですから時間が多少長くなり、間延びします。しかし、強弱のリズムで、間延びが間延びに感じられず、独特の英語の音になります。 SLEEP という場合も同様に１）Ｓ （スッ）の音を出して２）L（Lの音）の音を出します３）EE（イー）のおと出して、４）Pの音を出します。 個々の音を出す感じで、発音をし、同時に強く言う箇所をきちんと強く言う事が大切です。 皆様も練習してみて下さい。 ご参照ください。 （Ken's Office）

1st 合同英語練習会 （Ken's Office）
本日は、飯塚市にて、第1回（初）となる、英語発音セミナーを『合同英語練習会』と銘打って実施しました。---------------------------ー―---------------------------◎ Sunday Mar. 19thI got up by 5:00 a.m. and began to preparefor today's seminar. This seminar is mainly for my face-to-face English course students and correspondence course students.It's the first seminar held in Iizuka City, on the other hand,I have held English training seminar many times in Fukuoka Cityso far.I copied over 20 kinds of written references at a conveniencestore near my apartment in the morning.At 9:00, I had an English lesson with a local grade school teacher.This day he talked mainly about his students.At the beginning of the class, he asked me several questionsabout tense, especially "Past Perfect"(過去完了) and "Present Perfect"（現在完了）.I told him that we cannot use "Past Perfect" without"Past Tense" just like we cannot drive a car outsidea driving school unless we go to the third training phase.After this lesson, I was very busy in preparing for the seminar.The venue, Urata Community Hall, was close to my apartment,just 200 meters.I borrowed the key to the hall from the head of the communityand entered the hall around 12:30.This day, the sisters helped me a lot.I really appreciate them for their help.15 members (10 students of mine and 5 guests) joined the seminar.One of them came from Hakata and one of them came fromHofu, Yamaguchi Pref. I specially thank them for coming allthe way from their places.In the seminar, I focused on pronunciation, intonationand rhythm of English.I started this seminar with Japanese tongue twisters:The beginning section aimed to make participants speakloudly and raise their voice.Next, I invited the participants to copy the way a gaijin speaks Japanese.English native speakers speak Japanese with typical English rhythm:Strong & Week Rhythm (Beat).For example, 【 Hi, Wata～shi, Tom (タ-ム）de～su!!!】Followed by the training of saying Toyota, Kawasaki and Karatewith English accent:TOY/O/TA （トィオウラ）KAWASAKI（クワせあ～キ）KARATE （クラーテ・鞍手）★ Now, I regret that I forgot to do 九九 in English with the participants.ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーEnglish has its unique rhythm.Spring has come.If a native English speaker say this sentence with their normalspeed, "Spring's come."（ハズ） should be （ズ）.Next, I introduced 5 or 6 famous English words which many JapaneseEnglish learners fail to say correctly.Those words include McDonald, Madonna, Hot Coffee, Hot Dog,Hot Potato, etc.-----------------------------------------------------After a 10 min break, I moved on to English tongue twisters andjazz chants. Jazz chants are the main part of this seminar.I prepared four chants, but I just did two of them due to timelimitation. I stressed the importance of English rhythm whileintroducing Sandwich Chants.After chants, I moved to Jazz songs.I picked out "Come-on-a-my-house" and "Love for Sale."If you sing"Come-on-a-my-house", you should have a strongvoice."Love for Sale" had a good English rhythm, say,1) Who'd like to sample my supply? 2) Who's prepared to pay the price for a trip to paradise? Actually, I prepared 10 kinds of jazz songs but I failed todo all of them. I should have been careful in time management.-----------------------------------------------------After we sang these two songs, it was already 4:00 p.m.I got surprised that I couldn't do even 50% of what I had planned to do.So, I changed my plan a little and in the third section (after the second recess) I let each participant introduce himself/herself to other participants.Finally, we practiced how to say things smoothly and effectivelyusing TV quiz show, TIME SHOCK.I handed out a piece of paper, on which one question was written,to participants each. The paper should be turned over untilI said OK.Each participant had to come to the front andtranslate his/her question into English as quickly as possible.I introduced some of the techniques on how to express thingseffectively.----------------------------------------------------Around 5:00, the seminar was closed.After the seminar, one of my deshis kindly played the guitarand sang a song for us.I was exhausted.The participants said that they had a great time, butI had lots of things to be improved.Especially, I completely forgot to use 九九 trainingand give them detailed explanation about pronunciation.Due to poor preparation, I was very nervous during the seminar.That's why I forgot to do other important things.Plus, I should've used 【Mary Had a Little Lamb】 to helpthe participants understand the English rhythm.------------------------------------------------Finally, I express special thanks to the Sisters, the singer withguitar, and all the participants.Ken Suetsugu

Mar. 18thEvery Saturday is packed with English lessons.I start every Saturday with an English lesson witha grade school teacher.He has taken my course for the longest time, nearly6 years.This day, we watched a CNN news show which reportedan on-going controversy happening in the States.I will mention this controversy later.I hadn't known that a national-wide controversywas going on in the States.I came across several new words.One of them was "hot potato".This means something troublesome.After this lesson, I usually have another lesson with a lady.But this day she was out of town due to some private reasons.She was absent. But instead of this lady, I had a substitute lessonwith a different student.We used TV Show titled "Quiz Time Shock", to be more exact,I used the questions used in the show and told the studentto put these questions into English within five seconds.We did about 30 questions as the translating training.After this lesson, I am supposed to have another lessonwith a different student. But this student cancelledthe lesson. I cancelled a lesson in the afternoon, because I wasvery busy preparing for the meeting of Toastmaster's Club.In the afternoon this day, I joined the meeting of the Club.In this meeting, I was supposed to work as a MC ofCurrent Topic Discussion.I picked out "English Education at Elementary School as a regular subject" as the topic of the discussion.This day a dozen of people joined the meeting.I asked many of them whether they were for or againstEnglish Education at Grade School.I wanted to ask all the members, but I failed todue to time limitation.It rained all day today.When I got home, I got a call from a deshi of mine.The deshi joined the meeting as a regular member this day, too.The deshi was still at the venue.The deshi asked me for help, but later she cancelledthe business the deshi wanted me to do, when the deshi knew that I was already back home. But I insisted on going back to her to help her.I braved(ものともしない) rain or any hardship to satisfy her demands as her mentor. So I rode my motorcycleand rushed there. It was only 5-6 min. trip. Very fast, wasn't it?But I failed to meet her.As their mentor, it is my responsibility to satisfy demands ofmy deshis and make them feel happy or happierthrough English or related things.After this, I had an English lesson with a high school girl.------------------------------------------------Ken

将棋の有用性
将棋と私将棋はとっても面白い。また、将棋をする事で色々と勉強になる。私は、普段の節活や仕事、その他の事で、難しい局面を迎えたり、苦しい状況に陥ると、その状況を将棋の局面に置き換えて判断をする癖がある。将棋は、ややもすれば屋内の単なるボードゲームに見られがちであるが、実際は、将棋は、「人生、仕事、日々の生活という諸事の面で応用が利く、深遠な道」と考えている。将棋は、小学生の頃、父親から手ほどきを受けた。しかし、覚えたての初心者の頃は将棋の指し方がよく判らずに負けてばかりいて、全く面白くなかった。が、将棋を題材にした万が本を中学の時に、たまたま見つけこれを読み出す様になって俄然、棋力も向上し、以来、将棋は私の生活に欠かせない趣味となっている。将棋の面白い所、或いは、怖い所は、何と言っても、「自分との戦い」という面である。将棋は、自分の性格がそのまま出るものである。将棋は、勿論、相手と指すゲームであるが、「相手との戦い」とは、結局は「自分との戦い」である。将棋では、自己の判断を要する場面が頻繁に現れる。例えば、ある場面で、「攻めを行うか」、或いは、「守りに行くか」など千差万別の変化が現れる。この様な場合、正解の着手（判断）を選択したり、考慮するのは、大変難しいののである。攻める場合でも、守る場合でも、その後、「どんな展開に持ち込むか？或いは、「先々の有利な展開を想定して」、その局面に持ち込むにはどの様にして着手を展開していくか？？などなど、様々な事を考えながら慎重に手を指していかねばならない。この様な判断に必要な視点は「大局観」、「構想力」、「論理的思考力」「相手の心と作戦を読み取る力」、「企画力」ひいては、「人間としての器の大きさ」、「人間力」である。企業の社長さんで将棋や囲碁を趣味にされている方が多い。そして、社長さんには強い方が多い。それは色々な人生経験や仕事上の経験で、上述の多種な能力が身に付いており、将棋にそのまま反映されている為であろう。将棋は、人生の勉強にもなり、企画力、構想力等を養い、人間性を高める教育源にもなるのである。私が将棋に惹かれる点はこうしたところにある。将棋を指しているとよく見られる事であるが、好調に相手に攻めていて、気が緩んで見落とし（うっかりミス）をしてしまったり、逆に負けそうな苦しい状況をしのいでいる内に勝利への希望が見えてきたりと「勝負のあや」について考えさせされる。勝負というのは「表裏一体」である。勢い良く攻めている内に、段々、攻めの効果が空回りし、段々と攻めが先詰まりしてきて、情勢が変わり苦しくなってくる。これは景気が良い頃に、大手の企業が海外投資などをしてやがては経営母体が弱体化していく過程と同じである。将棋を指す時に大切な事は、優勢局面でも調子に乗らず、心を落ち着かせてリスクのある手でなく、確実な手を指していく事である。また、その様な着手ができる位に冷静に局面を判断できる心を持つ事が肝要である。これはそのまま企業の運営や人生の展開にも当てはまるものであろう。これは、将棋を通して得られる哲学である。将棋をすると色々と勉強になる所以である。（Ken's Office）

使えない英語・教育の再考を！
『使えない英語教育の再考を』日本ほど英語教育が盛んで、その一方、英語を話せない人が多い国はあるまい。滑稽である。私は小学校での英語教育には反対である。英語を楽しむという点に於いては小学校の英語教育は良いであろう。が、海外の人たちと十分にコミュニケーションを取れる事を目的とする場合、別に小学校やそれ以前から英語を習っているからといって、それで英語が上達し、国際的に活躍できるという訳ではないし、その保証もない。これは仕事柄断言できる。日本の英語教育は長期的に一貫した方針が欠けている。小学校で楽しく英語を習ったとしても中・高校時に英語が嫌いになる場合が多いのである。一方で、英会話では私達が中学で学習する単語や表現を使う回す事で十分に用が足せるのに、習っている筈の単語や言い方を使えない人が多い。中学・高校の英語教育の在り方も見直すべきであろう。（Ken's Office）

Problem with OCN Line
◎Mon. Mar. 13thI usually get up around 5:00 a.m. and turn on my PC to check e-mailI receive from you, my customers and other people.This morning, I got up at 5:00 and turned on my PC.Then, I tried to get my PC connected with the Internet.But I failed. My PC displayed an error message that went"Sorry, you failed to get connected with the Internet."I wondered why and tried to get my PC connected withthe Internet again. But I failed again.Every time I tried to get my PC connected with the Internet,I failed and the error message was displayed.So, I pulled the cable from the socket and waited forabout 20 seconds. Then, I inserted it into the socket.Sometimes this method of recovery works very well.But only this time even this method failed to work.Gradually I came to be in a panic gradually, because I would neverbe able to do any work without the Internet or PC.Finally I called the customer supporting center of OCN after9:00 a.m. when the center was open.The staff member in charge gave me lots of instructionshow to fix the Internet-connecting system.Even after I followed her instructions and operatedthe system as told, I failed to get my PC connected withthe Internet.While I was talking to the staff member, she suddenly seemedto receive an urgent information and told to me that a certaintrouble happened with one of OCN Lines I used in Fukuoka Area.She went to say that many people in Fukuoka or Kitakyushu calledthe center for inquiries about their failure to get their PCs connectedjust like I did. I came to know that a certain problem happenedwith the line and, in a way, I got relieved.It wasn't my PC or my system which was responsible for the connectionfailure.After this, I had two English lessons.Then I left for 天神 around 00:30.This day I had an English-translation seminar at SOHO Support Center.I had a two-hour-long session in which I used problems of TV Quiz Shownamed "Time Shock."This day I had three participants including one of my deshis.After the seminar, I had wanted to take the deshi to Beneton FukuokaShop which was next to SOHO Support Center.But my mind was on the connection with the Internet and so I rushedback to Iizuka.After I came back, I tried to get the PC connected with the Internet.Seemed to me that the problem which had happened this morning was alreadyremoved. I was able to get it connected with PC.I got fully relieved.Ken

Fri. Mar. 10thThis morning when I woke up, I found myself feeling a pain in my lower back.This must be because I always sit on tatami mat with bad posture.I felt severe pain in my back. I have to admit that I'm a person who tendto have a pain in my back, especially lower back.I have been a judo wrestler for over 20 years.My favorite throwing technique is 背負い投げ.If I apply 背負い投げ to my opponent, I have to have the load ofthe opponent all over my back. This is one of the causes of the painin my back. Probably other judo wrestlers, whose favorite throwingtechnique is 背負い投げ must suffer from this pain.In the evening, I had a two-hour long English lesson with one ofmy deshis. Then, she talked about 三井物産 and so I developedthe topic and talked to her about what a real 商社 should be like,what kinds of dealings they (should) do and what field of businessthe deshi should work for in the future.As I told you before, I DO WANT to employ her and developour mutual business with her sometime in the future.I am determined to train her to be a good English communicatoror interpreter for her happiness. At the same time, I realize thatshe needs to experience working for a company as one of hersocial experiences for a couple of years.This experience is necessary if she'd like to become a pro-interpreter in the future.I talked a lot about 商社 this day to let her knowhow things work in 商社. Since I originally worked for 商社before starting my business, I love 商社 very much.I used to be responsible for the sales promotion of building materialsnamed TOGGLER and a car wax named PERMAGLASS.These two products are still available in DIY shops and other stores.This deshi is very appropriate for 商社, I guess.We talked a lot about her future and 商社.Then we reached a conclusion that 1) this deshi had the greatestpotentiality among my young students and 2) she is not a personwho feels happy if she work in 筑豊地区 or in Fukuoka.If she moves to Tokyo for employment, I might change my life-planand move my office to Tokyo, too.------------------------------------------------------------Ken Suetsugu

Trial English Lesson
This day I had a trial English lesson with a local resident.I got surprised to find that she was a really good English speaker.She was so great that I didn't think she needed to come here to take my course.She teaches English to local children. I was very happy that she uses jazz chants or chantsin her English lessons and that she sometimes usedthe English version of 九九掛け算 in her classes.Seems to me that she and I have a lot in common. In the evening, I had an English lesson with a deshi.I had it for two hours, teaching how to express things withcorrect pronunciation & rhythm, how to read and understand English, and doing listening practice. By the way, today junior high schoolers took the entrance examfor high school. Two of my students took the test today.I am hoping that they will pass the test. Before the English lesson with the deshi, Hiromi-chancame to see me for any part-time job. I asked her to putsome posters, which introduce my English Course, in localsupermarkets. She agreed and started to do this work.I am going to drink with her sometime soon to congratulateher on her graduation from her college. -----------------------------------------------Ken

Dancing Cheek to Cheek!
最近、あるテレビコマーシャルが新たに流れています。確か、航空会社のCMと思いますが、その中に、DANCING CHEEK TO CHEEK というジャズの歌が使われています。私がよく授業で使う歌で、好きな歌ですしょっちゅう、この歌は歌います。ルイアームストロング（サッチモ）のバージョンが好きです。 ジャズのボーカルで発音などを練習したのですが、当然 今でもしております。また、この歌は、結局女の子とチークダンスを踊るのは楽しい、という内容ですが、これを歌うと、私はディスコ（ジュリアナ東京）クラブ（パラノイア（osaka）やクーosakaミナミ）時代を良く思い出します。週末はしょっちゅう踊りやその他の目的で行っていました。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー◎以下の歌詞をうまく日本語に訳してみて下さい ♪Heaven! 王様ラーメン
I am very happy that my new course named ＜携帯電話使用通信講座＞,【the translation drill using mobile phone】 is well-reputedamong the students of mine. As you know, I have three deshis.One of them is a college student who I'd like to share mytranslation business with in the future to come.Since she is a college student now, she needs to learn moreabout English train herself in the way of English.So, as her mentor(師匠), I always think what I should keepdoing to get her exposed to English. 携帯電話使用通信講座 is originally one of the ideasI hit upon for her. Today I had a sudden visit of a friend of mine, Nobu-chan.She lives in 宝泉寺温泉, 九重町, Oita where we can enjoy many types of hot springs. She came to see me to practice English and something.After our practice, I took her to a local ramen restaurantcalled 王様ラーメン in 小竹町.王様ラーメン offers us the best ラーメン in the world, I believe.Actually nobu-chan completely agrees with me. ○武蔵著『兵道鏡』後書きについて
宮本武蔵の最初の著作（で、現在明らかになっているもの）は『兵道鏡』です。宮本武蔵は、養父・新免無二之助一真の十手術「当理流」を引き継ぎ、これに工夫をして『円明流』を創始しました。『円明流』は後の兵法・二天一流の基盤になります。『円明流』は名古屋を中心に広まりました。（＊実は、名古屋では笠寺観音に武蔵道場があったとの事で、 かってこの笠寺観音の裏手に以前私は部屋を借りておりました）尚、「円明」は、武蔵の実際の生誕地、兵庫県の米田村、つまり高砂の地に所縁のある言葉です。慶長10年（1605年）12月に、武蔵は当時の高弟・落合忠右衛門に『兵道鏡』を相伝しております。慶長10年といえば、前年の慶長9年に、京都の吉岡と試合を重ねておりますので、その翌年に伝書を製作した事になります。『兵道鏡』は２８ヶ条から構成されております。その＜後書き＞は以下の通りです：原文は漢文ですが、読み下しです：「右、六七々八の条々（注：２８ヶ条）、 慶長十年初冬の頃、 忽然として細やかに的伝（てきでん）の秘術を積み、 明鏡の書を作り、『兵道鏡』と名付け、 ことごとく妙術を伝うる弟子（ていし）、 印免の者にこれを授け、 今古無双（こんこぶそう）の兵法、 後々末々まで絶えずベからざる為に、 先跡無類（せんせきむるい）の秘事等を 書き付け置かしむるなり。 たとえ、予（注：武蔵の事）が直筆の免状の手形を 有すといえども、この秘巻無き者は、 必ず、状（じょう）用ゆるべからず。 この条々を学ばずば、 如何でか勝負を決せんや。 親子兄弟たりともこれを授けずという、 その覚悟によりて、誠に他事をなげうって、 執心神妙の旨、 この一巻、相渡すものなり。秘すべし、秘すべし。 円明流天下一 宮本武蔵守 藤原義経 落合忠右衛門慰殿 参 慶長十年極月吉日良辰」 ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーken

宗伯の槍・武蔵の剣
福岡県京都郡豊津町に小笠原家に所縁がある小笠原神社があります。その神社の前に、石碑「双雄の碑」が建っています。その碑文の末尾に漢詩があり、それを読み下しますと次の内容になります：ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー「養之昇平」これを養えば昇平（しょうへい）「用之戦陣」これを用うれば戦陣「父子相承」父子相承け「刺撃遒健」刺撃遒健（しげきしゅうけん）「隔世異時」世を隔て時異なるとも「厥技胡遜」厥（その）技 胡（なんぞ）遜（ゆず）らん「宗伯之槍 武蔵之剣」宗伯の槍・武蔵の剣小倉藩の幕末の剣士、青柳真武・武知父子の武技と高田宗伯と宮本武蔵の双雄を顕彰したものです。高田宗伯とは、宝蔵院流槍術の名手・「高田又兵衛」の事ですが、武蔵が明石藩に滞在中、召抱られました。宗伯の槍と武蔵の剣は、長い間、小倉藩のシンボルでした。

今週、お取引先企業の新規担当者と【ある事】が生じました。 2月中旬、この方から見積もりの依頼がきました。ですので、翌日までに見積もりを提示致しました。 尚、その見積もり文書中に、「貴社の検討結果が仮にネガティブな内容になったとしても、その旨を仰って貰えれば、妥協・交渉の余地がありますので、宜しくお願い致します」との内容を書き添えました。 というのは、最近では、相手の見積もりを提示してもその後全く音沙汰なし、という会社が多いためです。 私は独立する前は、しっかりした商社で色々と勉強させて貰いましたが、【見積もりをお取引先に要請し、御見積もりを頂いたらその検討結果を必ず返事する様に教える事が次の商売に繋がる】、という風に教えられ、また自分もまさにその通りと思っておりますし、これはお取引の鉄則ですから、上記の様な企業には嫌気を覚えております。 で、2月中旬に御見積もりを出して、その後、10日経過しても何とも言ってこないので、3月2日に、こちらからお問合せをしました。その際に、「返事くらいはするのが礼儀である事」を丁重に申しましたら、逆ギレされました。驚きました。 結局、先方からのお返事は、「検討中です。合い見積もりの先を断りましたのでいずれ末次通訳事務所に依頼する方向です。追加の発注もあります」という返事でした。しかし、「いずれ」とは、何時の事なのかなど詳細が記載されておりませず、具体性のないものでした。 ＊合い見積もりとは、複数の会社から見積りを取り、その中から 一番良い先を選ぶ、という事です 当初の見積もり依頼時は、この文書翻訳について先方は急いで納品を求めておられましたので、私は当初の見積書内に「3月1日から作業開始したら、貴社の希望納期には間に合う」という事を書き添えておりました。それにも拘らず、その日を過ぎても担当者からは返事もなく、こちらが連絡してやっとお返事がもらえました。[検討中なら検討中で構いませんので、その旨を連絡する事が大切であると思っております] この会社はとても良い、素晴らしい会社で、この会社の社長さんを私は尊敬しておりますが、この担当者はなんという姿勢であろうか？と思いました。この会社（というか、この担当者）からの発注は受けない事に決めました。この女性は若い事もあるでしょうが、というのは商売というのを理解していない為です。10万円くらいの発注金額でしたが、今回は自分の理念を優先しました。 きちんとした商売（取引）を知らない女性はヒステリックになる場合がありますので正直な所、扱いが[やっかい]です。 私は企業間取引を主体にしたいのですが、最近はあまり良い企業（担当者）が少なくなった感じがします。良い企業とは正しい商売のあり方を熟知し、実践している会社です。（自分の業務について企業主体の方針を見直そうと思います）ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーken

This day was packed with six English lessons.I was very tired when I got through them.Since I went to Tenjin this Monday and had to cancelsome lessons on Feb.27th(Monday), so I had substitute lessons this day. As you know, what I teach in my English lesson depends on the needs of students. For example, I teach how to pronounce words to a student of mineand I teach how to communicate with gaijins to another student.I teach how to translate some other of my students. Having English six lessons was very tiring for me, anyway.These lessons include the one I had with one of my deshis(弟子s).I feel very happy and inspired whenever I have an English lesson withmy deshis. In the night, I had a phone call from a friend of mine who lives in 鎌倉.He has been one of my best friends since my college days.He said that he would marry a lady who was from a foreign country,planning to have a wedding ceremony in her country this May or June..He asked me to come to their wedding party. I said "Yes."There was no reason I said "No" to him.This friend was a boxer and once won the championship ofKICK BOXING some years ago.We used to do physical training together when we lived in the dormitoryof 佛教大学.He sometimes came to support me in my wrestling and sambo championships several years ago, playing the role of my second. -------------------Ken Suetsugu

戸籍謄本の英語訳These days, I've received inquiries or orders of translations offamily registers, what we call "戸籍謄本".The demand for translation in this field must be growing nowas the number of Japanese who married foreign people has beenincreasing. This day I had three orders of translation: Two of themwere the translation of 戸籍謄本 and the other was the translationof 自動車保険証書.All the order-placers said that they would move to Australiaand needed to get the documents translated in English. I'm very happy to have received these requests.But I have one big problem in translating 戸籍謄本, especiallythe traditional type. I feel very nervous before I work on the translation. I know that there are two types of Family Register Form: Old one and New one.New one is a table in which short items of personal informationare filled in. Then, the old form is a problem to me.It contains personal data of family members.Sentences are very long, complicated and hard to read.Because there are no punctuation marks（句読点） in these sentences.The letters and numbers are all kanji-written.It is really hard to read. For example, 昭和2２年 is writtenlike 昭和弐 拾弐年. This type of form sometimes causesme to make some mistakes when I read and understand the information. In fact, at the beginning of this year, I was ordered to translate戸籍謄本 for a family who was supposed to move to Australia.This 戸籍謄本 contained lots of old kanjis which made me misunderstandthe information. I made some errors in the translation and had tocorrect them after I delivered it to the customer.So I was forced to make the charge for the translation free,feeling so sorry to the customer. Since then, I feel very nervous just before I translate 戸籍謄本.But I have to get this feeling over ASAP.--------------------------------------------------------

◎現在進行形の意味とは？
思うところがありまして、以下講義致します： 例えば、皆様が、お友達と駅前で待ち合わせしているとします：13時に待ち合わせですが、お友達が少し遅れている様ですこれを表現する場合、I'm waiting for my friend now. 今友達待っているんですWe're supposed to meet here at 1 p.m. today. 一時に会うことにしているんだ。 ↑の英語は問題ありません。 他の例：皆さんが今、小腹が空いたので インスタントラーメンを作っています I'm making ramen now. ですね これは現在進行形ですが、現在進行形とは、「まさに今、～（動作を）～している」という意味合いですね これを逆に言いますとどういう事になるでしょうか？ 現在、21：49分です：今、私はこのメールを作っている最中です。⇒I'm making this *e-mail for you now. *(lecture) あと10分～15分もしたら、このメールの作成も終わるでしょう。 つまり、「今このときだけ、～～（動作）をしている」というのが現在進行形です。逆にいえば、一定の時間がたてば、その動作は終わる、という含みがあります。だからこそ、＜今、刹那的に＞～～している、という意味合いですねーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー「私は今杉並区に住んでいます」と英語で言う場合、I am living in Suginami Ward now. という風に言う方がおられます。これは、間違いと言っても良いですね 通常は、I live in Suginami Ward now. ですね「現在形」とはもっと判り易く言い換えますと、「普段の動作・行動形」ですね 今、私は、残念ですが、飯塚に住んでいます。まだ、しばらく（長い間）こちらにいます。この場合は、I live in Iizuka. ですねというのは、明日も飯塚に住むでしょうし、明後日も、来週も、4ヵ月後も、飯塚に住むだろうからです。それが、間違いないためです。 I'm living in Iizuka now. でしたらいっとき、飯塚に住んでいる、一時的に滞在している、という事になり来週は、他の地区の実家に戻るかもしれません。 I am making ramen. は、今ラーメンを作っているのですが5分もしたら、10分もしたら、終わる事を示しています。 「今 ～しています】という日本語の表現には、今まさにこの時間～～している、という場合⇒⇒進行形で対応 と今（普段の事として、ガソリンスタンドで働いている⇒現在形で対応と2つのパタンがありますので、日本語で言いたい事を良く、深く考えて、英語で言いましょう ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝

捨て目を利かせる講義
さて、講義です：＜捨て目を利かせる＞講義です 昨日はニューズウイークのミニカレンダーから題材を取りましたが、今日は TIME誌からですーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー渡辺謙の写真の下の方に ASIA'S HEROES とあります そして、次の様に続きます： Our annual celebration of the courageous.the gifted, the inspired and the inspiring. ★ the に形容詞が並んだ表現は those who are形容詞 という意味合いと同じですね つまり、 the poor とは、those who are poor ですね 「毎年恒例の特集： 勇気ある者 才能ある者 やる気の高い者 人に感動を与える者」ですね ここで注目すべきは、the inspired とthe inspiring ですね 過去分詞や現在分詞はもはや「動詞」でなく「形容詞」です。 inspire とは、人に感動を与える、人を刺激する という意味合いです。他動詞には、常に、「他人を～させる」という風に「他人を」というのが意味に含まれています。これは基本ですが大切な事ですinteresting の interestも「他人に興味を持たせる」「他人をそそらせる」という意味合いですねですので、interesting は、「他人に興味を持たせる様な＝面白い・興味深い」となります inspiring は、他人を感動させる、 他人を刺激させる という意味合いですね 他動詞の意味合いには、常に「他人を～させる」という含みがあります the は、～という人たち という意味合いですから「人を感動させる人」となります inspired の場合ですが、＜元々他人を感動させる＞という他動詞的意味合いが、受身になっておりますので、＜他人に感動させられた⇒感動した＞と言う意味合いですねthe inspired は、感動した人たち、という意味合いですね gift は、神様が人に才能を授ける、という意味合いですが、the gifted は、才能が与えられた人たち、という意味合いですね 私は常に、斬れる英語、通じる英語を求めていますその意識が日常的になっておりますので、こうしたミニカレンダーの英語表現からでも或いは、街中の英語看板からでも、その他何からでも英語の練習に取り込めます。 大発見などをする科学者も普段から自分の研究内容について、意識しており（つまり、飯を食べる間も、トイレに入っている間もそのことばかり考えており、そして、日常生活の何かのふとしたきっかけで大きな発想転換や発明に繋がる、と思います）これが捨て目が利く、という事です。これは英語以外のどの分野にも当てはまりますが、どうぞ、ご参照ください。こうした事ができるかどうか？はそれが好きかどうかということであり、こうした事が出来る人は、必ず成功します。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。

March 1stIt's March 1st today when almost all public high schoolshave their graduation ceremonies in Fukuoka Pref.One of my face-to-face English class students hasher graduation ceremony at her high school today.She's a younger sister of my deshi.Today is the day which reminds me of my high schooldays and the days afterwards.It was already 21 years ago when I graduated from嘉穂東高校. 21 years!!!One day after my own graduation ceremony, I was hospitalizedin 飯塚病院 to fix my bent bone in my nose.I had an operation to get my bent nose bone straightenedand stayed at the hospital for 10 days.After I was discharged from the hospital, I packed things andprepared for my moving to Kyoto.On April 3rd in 1985, I left for Kyoto by 新幹線.At that time, never did I expect that I would need 5 yearsto finish my university, 佛教大学.故郷をある意味捨てた積りでした。When I was heading for Kyoto to enter the university,I decided to spend the rest of my life in other big city like Tokyoor Osaka, not Iizuka or Kyushu.I had no intention to work in Iizuka or in other places in Kyushujust like I do now.ですからある意味、今現在がちょっと恥ずかしいのですThat's why I sometimes feel embarrassed to live and work here.でも、まだこれからです。これから頑張りますBut hope is still alive.I will still have a good opportunity to move to Tokyo againas a pro-interpreter.----------------------------------------------------Ken
