店先で焼かれている鳥肉↑（2009年8月9日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2009年8月9日。 今日は、アヒル肉の焼鳥屋さんへ来ています。 時間が早いので、店の中にはまだそれほどお客さんがいません。 店先では、炭火を熾して肉を焼いています。 しばらくしたら店は満員になってしまいました。 ラオスでは、道端や店先で、肉やソーセージ、魚、バナナ、さつまいもなどを焼いている光景に出合います。 何を焼いているのか見ながら道を散策するのも楽しみの一つです。【Bon appétit !】 遺伝病を遺伝させない技術 Scientists have developed a technique that, when combined with in vitro fertilization, could prevent certain hereditary diseases from being passed from mother to child. ラオスの麺カオソイ２
ヴィエンチャンで食べたカオソイ↑（2009年7月29日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2009年7月29日。 黄金の塔があるタートルアンの近くにいます。 カオソイを出してくれる新しく開店した食堂に来ています。 カオソイと言えばルアンパバン等ラオス北部でよく目にする麺です。 きしめん風の米粉麺を使った食べ物で、からし肉みそが乗っています。 一緒に行ったらラオス人によると、ルアンパバンで食べるのと同じ味のカオソイだということです。【Bon appétit !】Clue in Honeybee Colony Collapse Beekeepers and scientists alike have been alarmed and puzzled by a mysterious phenomenon, known as colony collapse disorder (CCD), which has affected nearly one-third of US bee colonies over the past few years. ラオスの棚田
だんだん田んぼ↑（2009年8月6日、ルアンパバン） 今は、2009年8月6日。 ルアンパバンの町から３０ｋｍほど南の方にある村に来ています。 山の中の村で、一番低い所に道路が走っていて集落があります。 周りは、山になっていて、集落と山の間に田んぼがあります。 田植えをした苗がどんどん育っているところです。 平地はあまりありませんので、田んぼのあぜ道は等高線にそってカーブしています。 だんだん田んぼが、あちこちにあります。【Bon appétit !】 妖精の輪 Also known as pixie（小妖精）rings, fairy circles, and elf circles, fairy rings are naturally occurring rings or arcs（円弧）of mushrooms found in forested areas or grasslands. ラオスの麺カオソイ
カオソイ↑（2009年8月5日、ルアンパバン） 今は、2009年8月5日。 ルアンパバンに来ています。 ルアンパバンの名物の一つは、カオソイと呼ばれる麺です。 ちょっと幅広の米粉麺で、辛めの肉みそが乗っているところがみそです。 ライムを絞ってカオソイに入れます。 付け合わせの、生のインゲンをぼりぼりかじったり、カピと呼ばれるエビ味噌をつけて食べながら、カオソイを食べます。 また、レタスやクレソン、ミント類もついてきますので、ハーブの味を口に含みながらカオソイを食べるのも違う趣があります。【Bon appétit !】 Multitaskers Media multitasking - using multiple forms of technology such as computers, televisions, radios, and cell phones at once - has become fairly routine in both the workplace and the home. ラオスの在外選挙
「在外選挙人証」の裏面↑（2009年8月22日） 今は、2009年8月22日。 今日は、第45回衆議院議員総選挙の投票を行ってきました。 外国にいながらにして選挙ができるとは有り難いものです。 日本では民主主義は当たり前のことのように思われていますが、このような権利はしっかりと行使していくことが民主主義を守ることにつながるのでしょう。 在ラオス日本国大使館に自転車に乗って行きました。 入口のわきに自転車を駐輪し、入口で身分証明証（旅券）を示し荷物検査をして中に入ります。 受付で投票手続きについて説明を受けます。 通常の日本での投票であれば、小選挙区と比例代表の二枚の投票用紙が渡されるだけですが、ここでは、このほかに投票用紙を入れる中封筒と、中封筒を入れる封筒を渡されます。 二枚の投票用紙に記入して、中封筒に投票用紙を入れて封をして、それをもう一つの封筒に入れ封をし、封筒の表にラオスに来る前に所属していた選挙管理委員会のあて先を記入します。 一連の書類を渡し、立会人の確認を得て、すべて終了となります。 ラオスでは有権者（在外選挙人証所持者）が120名くらいと聞いています。 ラオスでの投票期間は19日から23日の5日間ですので、投票率１００％となれば、一日平均24名が投票に来ることになります。 私が投票した時には他の有権者には会いませんでした。【Bon appétit !】 リングワンダリング When humans are not presented with reliable direction cues, they really do walk in circles. お布施のためにお寺に集まった人々↑（2009年8月20日、サワナケート） 今は、2009年8月20日。 今日は、月に4回ある仏さまの日です。 いつもの仏さまの日と異なり、かなり多くの人がお寺にお参りします。 今日は、ブンホーカオパタブディン。 先祖の供養を行う日です。 日本でいえばお盆でしょうか。 ラオス語でお祭りはブンと言います。 ブの発音は、ブとボの中間ですので、日本語の「盆」の発音と似ていなくもありません。 早朝から、村中の人がお寺に来ています。 ゴザを敷いて、お坊さんにお布施をするための席取りをしています。 子供もたくさんお参りに来ています。【Bon appétit !】 ハッカー、クレジットカードのデータ盗む Albert Gonzalez, a Miami hacker who once worked as a government informant tracking down identity thieves, was indicted recently for the alleged theft of some 130 million credit card numbers. ラオスのベトナム料理の朝食
バンクアンと呼ばれる朝食↑（2009年7月19日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2009年7月19日。 早朝、クワディン市場に来ています。 この市場は、タラートサオと呼ばれるラオス最大のショッピングセンターの裏手にあります。 道路わきには、朝食目当てのお粥屋さん、フランスパンのサンドイッチ屋さんなどが目につきます。 道端や店先で、湯葉のようなものを作っています。 鍋の中にできた湯葉のようなものを、すくい取って、それを台の上に広げます。 春巻きの皮のようなものが出来上がります。 その中にひき肉を炒めた物や香草などを入れて、生春巻きのようなものが出来上がります。 バンクワンと呼ばれる食べ物で、ベトナム料理とのことです。 町中いたるところで見かけます。 たいてい長めのテーブルがあって、片側でお店の人がバンクワンを作り、もう一方に客が横に並んで座って出来立てのバンクアンを食べています。【Bon appétit !】 求愛 The lek is a traditional site where both males and females of a species congregate（集合する）during the breeding season. 米粉から作ったカオピヤックセン↑（2009年7月22日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2009年7月22日。 今日は、いつもたくさん賑わっている食堂に入ってみることにします。 このお店は、お昼ごろから始めて、材料がなくなると店じまいします。 というわけで、今までなかなか訪問する機会がありませんでした。 夕方、訪問してみると、今日はまだ店が開いています。 早速、カオピヤックを頼むことにします。 色が白く、ちょっと太めですので、見た目うどんの様に見えます。 こしがありませんので、日本で言うと、伊勢うどんのような感じでしょうか。 出てきたカオピヤックは、鶏がらスープであっさりしています。 アサツキや、揚げたニンニクなどがたくさん入っています。 これに、ライム汁を絞って入れ、漁醤を入れ味を整えます。 ラオス人は、さらに、トウガラシ、チリソース、ケチャップ、砂糖などを加えて好きな味にしています。 砂糖を入れるととても美味しくなるそうです。 茶色いかたまりは、豚の血を固めたものです。 皆さんも、自分好みの味に調えてみて、カオピヤックをご賞味下さい。【Bon appétit !】 プラズマフェレーゼ When it comes to organ transplants, people are more likely to find matching donors among those who share their ethnicity or race. お粥↑（2009年7月19日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2009年7月19日。 今日の朝食は、お粥を食べることにします。 今日は、今まで行ったことのない店に入ってみようと思います。 ラオス最大のショッピングセンターの裏にバスターミナルがあり、その近くにある食堂の一つに入りました。 ベトナム人が経営している店のようです。 ここのお粥は、米粒がドロドロになっています。 細くほぐした鳥肉が上にのっかています。 ラオスのお粥屋さんは、午前中だけとか夜だけというように時間限定の店がほとんどです。 この店は、夜中の2時ころ店を開け、昼過ぎにお店を閉めます。【Bon appétit !】 テレビの見すぎは血圧に悪い It has been widely documented that sedentary（いつも座っている、座業の）activities such as TV viewing, computer use, video game playing, and even reading contribute to obesity and overall poor health. ラオスの野菜炒飯
野菜チャーハン↑（2009年7月19日、ヴィエンチャン） 今は、2009年7月19日。 メコン川沿いにある食堂や屋台は、川岸工事のために、みな移転しています。 私が、よく行く食堂も移転しています。 この食堂は、道路から桟敷を伸ばしその上にテーブルとイスを並べていました。 簡単な屋根も付けていますので、若干の雨漏りはありますが、スコールの時でも、川を眺めながら食事をすることができます。 今日は、その食堂へ行ってみました。 川岸から７０ｍ位離れたところに移転していて、川を眺めることはできません。 夕陽を見ながらのビールは期待できませんが、メコン川を想像しながら野菜チャーハンを食べました。【Bon appétit !】 ドゥルセ・デ・レチェ Dulce de leche, Spanish for "milk candy," is a syrup prepared by slowly heating milk and sugar to create a product similar to caramel. ラオスの雨季の空
急に現れた黒い雲↑（2009年、7月13日、ヴィエンチャン） ラオスには四季はありません。 そのかわり乾季と雨季があります。 大体、５月から１０月が雨季で１１月から４月が乾季という感じです。 一番暑い時期が４月、一番寒い時期が１月になります。 今は雨季です。 雨季と言っても、傘をさすことはあまりありません。 たいてい晴れていますが、急に黒い雲が現れて風が吹いてくるとスコールがやってきます。 スコールのような雨の時は傘は役に立ちませんので、雨がやむのを待ちます。 スコールの後はからっと晴れ上がります。 一日中雨が降ることは、それほどありません。 夜中や明け方のスコールがよくあり、朝は気温が下がってとても過ごし安くなります。 「ラオスは暑いでしょう」とよく言われます。 実際は、気温がそれほど上がらず、湿度も高くなく、日本に比べればかなり快適な気候です。 確かに4月は暑いのですが、それでも日陰にいれば快適です。 快適な気候を求めて、退職後にラオスに住んでいる人が何人もいます。【Bon appétit !】 ドリフティング Drifting is a motorsport in which drivers deliberately oversteer their cars, sending them sideways through a series of turns.
