A Japanese solar-powered car won the World Solar Challenge, a four-day, 1,864-mile (3,000-kilometer) race through Australia’s outback(奥地), averaging speeds of more than 62 miles (100 kilometers) per hour. The car, named the Tokai Challenger, was made by a group of students from Japan's Tokai University and beat out 30 other vehicles brought by teams from around the world. Its nearest rivals were more than two hours behind when it crossed the finish line. The World Solar Challenge, which has taken place every two or three years since 1987, is intended to promote the development of environmentally friendly solar technology.
