2週間に1回来る、杉田先生とクリスさんのトークの日は、分量が多く
大変です。(>_<)
その分、勉強になるセリフが多いのも事実ですが・・・。

Hello, everybody
Welcome to the show.
This is Chris Matsushita.
Let's take a good look at business English.

Now Chris, what advice do you have to expand horizons and situations
like one at the Shuzo is facing.

keep your resume up to date.

That's good advice.
Yeah, because sometimes you need to send it out fairly quickly.
I think also in the cases someone like Takahashi
you could have two or three versions of your resume ready, sort of
focusing on different areas of your experience, or ... you know ...
that's in you've done.

Dietician, working in fast food chain and PR background.

Right, PR background. So, you know, it's the same information, but you
can highlight different parts of it. And then you're ready for anybody
who comes asking.

You should be always open to new opportunities, right?

Yeah, I think so.

Never turn down a call from a headhunter.

Right, I mean, why should you turn it down if
nothing else you might get a nice meal out of it.

the headhunter, you might find out a lot of information about
whatever field they are coming from.

Exactly. And know a little bit about your own market value.

Yeah, I think it could tell you a lot about that.
So maybe you start thinking a little more about the next time you're supposed to
get a raise. You know, maybe you can negotiate for something more
than you're expecting originally.

And I understand that you're sometimes involved in job interviews.
Is that right?

Yeah, the company I work in developed what I think it's a pretty nice series of interviews
when they are hiring especially higher level managers and that.

So now and then when English is fairly important for the position that they're hiring
for, they'll ask me to interview candidates to check their English ability.

Respite from English ability, what else do you look for, umm..., high level interviews.

Umm..., of course I want to see how well they communicate.
So, I'm not looking so much for where they make mistakes or not in English.
But can they express themselves in spite of mistakes, because in a second language
people are gonna make some sort of mistake, you know, from time to time at least.
So, I look for people who try to give full answers. But even more than that people who check
if they understood the questions or who add extra information or who sound really interested in the
company, so that they ask their own questions.

Right.
You have to show your interest and ask your questions to the other side.

Yeah, I think so.
I understand it's so a lot more nerve-wracking to be interviewed in a second language.
But some people are really almost like doormats, which means they don't produce very much
except in response to questions. And then when they answer, it's only just that question.
Right, so they're not they're not showing me what they can do or what they might be able to do with
a little more training or practice.

That's what you mean by being a doormat, right?
Yeah, not not giving anything extra buck.

I see.

And From what I've read, that's important in any kind of job interviews,
not just one checking somebody's language skills.

Right, Uh-huh.

あんな時、こんな時

I think for English speakers saying Lady Luck makes it sound a little fickle
like she might give you luck or she might hold it back.
But you have no way to predict which way it's gonna go.
Also related to the phrase Lady Luck is a song that I think Frank
Cinatra originally sang. And it's called "Luck, Be a lady tonight."
So in that case he is hoping for good luck.
He is hoping that luck if you think of luck as a Goddess will be gracious and
kind and helpful.

There aren't too many ways to talk about good luck.
But you could say something like, "I hope you get the breaks you need."
or "I hope you get all the breaks."

get the breaks 幸運である

I think that's friendly use teasing because its have an accent, you have an accent.
But if they are friendlier use, teasing use, and it's usually because
they are fond of you.

And "May I wish you every success?" is a question form, so it's possible to raise
your voice at the end of this question because it is a yes-no question.
But you can also say it as a sentence, "May I wish you every success with your book."

A lot of people say you make your own luck. It's not sitting and waiting for something good
to happen to you.

down on one's luck ついていない時

People use that phrase to say it's not because that's a bad person,
it's not because of lack of effort or lack of ability, it's just circumstances went
against the person.

born under a bad sign 不運な星のもとにうまれた

Although I think down on one's luck often refers to a temporary state whereas
born under a bad sign might mean your whole life all you have is bad luck.

Yeah, similar phrase is you're out of luck.

There are all kinds of ways to wish somebody congratulations.
But here is a fairly common way you could say at.

"Congratulations. I wish you the best of luck in your new position at headquarters."

Look at the note below.
You will hear a man leaving a message about a meeting.
Fill in the blanks with the appropriate information.

The answers are
1, proposal
2, boardroom
3, designer
4, budget

Which of the charts shows the current market share of three publishing companies?

The answer is B.

That's all for today.
Please join us again next time.
