Did I mention that I was a priest?
ところで、わしが坊さんだって言ったかいな？

One of my favourite activities was to marry couples.
わしの一番すきなしごとは恋人同士を結婚させることだったんじゃ。

Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law,
帝王が結婚禁止令をだしたけどね、だから何さ

I kept on performing marriage ceremonies

- secretly, of course.
無論、ないしょでじゃがね。ｳﾝ

It was really quite exciting.
なかなか、スリルがあったよ。

Imagine a small candlelit room with
想像できるかい？小さなローソクをともした小さなへやで

only the bride and groom and myself.
新郎と新婦とわしだけじゃよ。ｳｦｯﾎﾝ

We would whisper the words of the ceremony,
ささやくように、誓いのことばを言って、

listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.

One night, we did hear footsteps.
あるばん、その足音がきこえたのじゃ。

It was scary!
こわかったよ～！

Thank goodness the couple

I was marrying escaped in time.
正式に結婚して憲兵の来る前に逃げたんじゃ。

I was caught. I was thrown in jail
じゃが、わしは逮捕されて、牢屋にぶちこまれた

and told that my punishment was death.
で、死刑を宣告されたんだよ。

I tried to stay cheerful.
でも、一生懸命ほがらかにしていたんだ。

And do you know what? Wonderful things happened.
そしたら、素晴らしいことが起こったんだよ！

Many young people came to the jail to visit me.
大勢の若いカップルが牢屋までたずねて来てくれた

They threw flowers and notes up to my window.
窓ぎわから手紙や花をなげいれてくれたんだよ。

They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.

【愛】を信じてるって、わしに伝えたかったんだね。
