Against the former, the language of patriotism invites individuals to remain culturally defined, interested, and passionate, and tries to instil in them a culture of liberty, an interest in the republic, a love of the common good; it does not aim to dictate what rational moral individuals ought to do, but to make those who love liberty stronger than the champions of oppression and discrimination. –  Ibid .

Against the latter--which can be defined as a nationalist or communitarian position--patriotism tries to translate a particular attachment between people who are culturally similar into commitment to a good--the republic--which is still particular as it is the republic of a particular people, although it encompasses cultural diversity.– Ibid .

ln the case of philosophical foundations of politics the work to be done is to avoid useless forays into rationality, remain well attached to the world of passions, and try to shape them through rhetoric and political action; in the case of nationalism and communitarianism one must still conduct the intellectual and political fight at the level of passions and interests aiming to transform sordid and ignoble passions, again through rhetoric and political action, into higher and more generous ones that give strength and translate into solidarity with the victims of oppression. –  Ibid .
