This has happened once before. In 2016, there was this big hack for a lot of money. Some people wanted to say, “Tough luck. You got hacked. That’s reality.” while some others wanted to say, “It’s way too early for us to suffer something like this. Let’s all rewind the clock and pretend it never happened.”

That first group of people ended up creating what’s now called Ethereum Classic — at that moment it was Ethereum with the hack — and the second group proceeded with what’s now called just Ethereum — Ethereum without the hack.

Ever since that divergence, they have lived completely separate lives, with all the important activity happening on Ethereum.

With the upcoming Merge, we could see this play out all over again, this time with one version of Ethereum staying on Proof of Work and the other version of Ethereum moving on to the new model (Proof of Stake). Most people expect the second one to be the “real” Ethereum moving forward.

The financial motives are at play here. These miners want to continue extracting, this time via a new token for a new blockchain, despite how irrelevant that blockchain will be.
