give it 「やっつける」
give it to...straight 《略式》「...をしかりとばす、殴る」
catch it 「やっつけられる」
[普通は未来時制で]《略式》（子供が）しかられる、罰を受ける
Come on, give it to me straight, is it cancer? 《口語》「さあ、はっきり言ってください、がんなのですか」
You'll catch it! 「しかられるぞ」
２．どうしてあの大作家があえてあんな作品を出版したのだろうか。評判がさがらなければいいんだが。

ポイント
dare は否定文と疑問文においてのみ、助動詞となる。
dare [動]「敢えて...する；挑む」
He dared me to a fight. 「彼は僕にけんかを売った」
He does not dare to do it. ＝ He daren't do it. 「彼はあえてやる勇気がない」
I dare you to go there by yourself. 「行けるものなら自分で行きなさいよ」
You wouldn't dare! 「あなたにはとてもできないだろう」

accept[refuse] a dare 「挑戦を受ける[断る]」
I asked her as a dare. 「挑発のつもりで彼女に聞いた」
prominent 「突き出た、傑出した；著名な」
one's socially prominent father 「社会的に著名な父親」
a company prominent in Europe 「ヨーロッパで有名な会社」
people prominent in scinence and literature 「科学の世界および文学界の名士」
３．（16.3の続き）孔子は紀元前478年に失意の人として死んだ。彼は自分を師として受け入れる指導者に巡り合うことはなかった。しかし彼は多くの熱心な弟子たちを残し、彼の影響は死後、より大きなものとなった。今日の中国は多くのことを孔子によっている。
Confucius died in 478 BC, a bitter man; he had found no ruler who would accept him as master. But he left many devoted disciples, and his influence was greater after his death. China today owes much to Confucius.

What this committee needs is the leavening influence of somebody with new ideas
