The stone monument was built in the 3rd year of Enkyo (1310) during the Kamakura period, and is called an "Itabi".
"Itabi" began in the Northern Kanto region during the Kamakura period, and was also actively buift throughout the prefecture until the Muromachi period.
The Sanskrit characters represent the Buddha they believe in, and by respecting them, they wished their parents and ancestors to remain peacefully after their death.
There is a legend about a man named Goro Hirata who use this monument to test his strength by lift it up, and that is the reason it has long been called the "Chikara Dameshi Ishi" (strength test stone).
