カレドニア・オーストラリス・シャルドネ[2009]年Caledonia Australis Chardonnay [2009]

2009 Caledonia Australis Chardonnay
eRobertParker.com #195
Jun 2011 Lisa Perrotti-Brown 87 Drink: 2011 - 2014 $30 (30)
Aged in 25% new French oak, barriques and large formats, and remaining on lees for 18 months, the 2009 Chardonnay has a moderate intensity of herbal, apple, fresh pear and under-ripe peach aromas over notes of peach kernels and raw almonds. Crisp, taut with a touch of greenness, this medium bodied Chardonnay has a pleasant creaminess to the texture and a long herbaceous finish. Drink to now to 2014.
Caledonia Australis is one of the newer, more substantial estates in the Gippsland region, producing their first vintage in 2000. The focus is on the two strengths of this cooler climate, maritime area: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. I visited the estate in May 2011 speaking with consultant winemaker Martin Williams MW, who has been with the project since 1995, about Gippsland's regional character. "The Gippsland Chardonnay style is somewhere between Yarra and Mornington - not quite so tropical like the Redhill character in Mornington and not wholly apple like the Hoddles Creek sub-region of the Yarra Valley," Williams informed me. Caledonia Australis makes Chardonnays and Pinots from two vineyards, Tilson and Notman, both with relatively fertile, free-draining soil profiles - rich ferresols over limestone. "The soil is not dissimilar to the Tamar Valley (Tasmania)," he suggested. The vineyards are dry-grown, though this is not such a difficult route here since Gippsland one of Victoria's wetter regions. "If we ever need irrigation here, then I would hate to see the state of the rest of Australia!" exclaimed Williams. Of Gippsland Pinot Noirs he said, "There's an earthiness that underlies the fruit, a kind of humus character. In the cooler years it can go a little vegetal. But the fruit generally has breadth and generosity." All the Pinots are de-stemmed. "There's a green streak in the fruit that doesn't need to be exaggerated," Williams commented. Of the current releases, "2009 was a long and even growing season. Late spring rains caused some worry but a hot spell mid-summer alleviated pressure. Late summer and autumn was mild and dry and the harvest itself was calm, slow and orderly. If the bushfires that affected some regions are taken out of the equation, 2009 might turn out to be a more elegant and pretty vintage than the preceding drought year vintages. Our wines are more structured than the 2008s and the 2009s should have long lives ahead."
