The NZ-style rugby club I started 2 years ago now has 5 primary student members, one junior high school student member, and 25 adult members ranging from 20 to the 50s. We have been on our first domestic tour, have hosted several visiting teams, and are clearly growing steadily and healthily. The two key NZ-style concepts are a maximum of two training sessions a week and a complete break in the summer (May to August). In an earlier entry, I discussed how some members have mentioned their wish that we institute summer training, something I will never approve of in this club.Whatever the organization, there is always a head person. The qualities sought-after in the head of any organization are a concept, leadership to attract members/staff and have them work for the organization, and a vision for the future. The head must never base his decisions on a desire for popularity. If the thinking of the head is clearly wrong, then the organization will move in a bad direction (such as the USA at present), but unless that is the case, then the organization can be said to be basically sound.Just because it is sound, however, that does not mean that all persons belonging to that body need to agree with every decision or policy of the head. In fact, 100% agreement is impossible. The question arises of what to do when you disagree with some elements of the head person’s management of the organization. If the organization is heading in a bad direction, then one measure would be to replace the head with someone better. But if the basic structure is sound and the organization healthy, then the disgruntled member has an easy decision: leave and form his own club or company, to be run according to his own principles. If he is incapable of doing that, then he must put up with those elements of the organization that he does not fully agree with, accepting that the positive elements outweigh them.

A headline in this morning's news was the transfer of Masashi Oguro, Japanese national team rep, to Grenoble, a team in the second division of France's national soccer league. Leaving to one side the issue of whether Oguro has what it takes to succeed overseas, I would like to comment on the ownership of this club.Grenoble Club was founded in 1892 and established its first professional team in 1957, almost a half-century ago.But the club was purchased this autumn by the Japanese mobile phone contents provider, Index. There was a massive debate in the Japanese media over the rights and wrongs of IT-related companies buying sports teams when Live Door and Rakuten were shaking up the baseball world here in Japan last summer, and one can only wonder how heated the debate would have been had it been a foreign company attempting to buy a Japanese team. Given that, I am bewildered by the total silence of the same media when a Japanese company buys a long-established sports team overseas. Is this not a form of racialism? Or can someone explain it to me better?

With all the snow preventing me from doing any physical work at the ground or in our garden, I am a wee bit stressed out at present. As if to exacerbate that situation, one senior member of the rugby club visited my house last night to discuss the manner in which the club is run.Basically, his argument was that several of the members would like the club to abandon the Sep-Apr season rule and start training in summer.I guess what surprises me the most is this bald statement that "there are no summer sports in which we are interested, so let's play rugby in the summer". For me, a person who had the good fortune to grow up in New Zealand where you are encouraged to play a range of sports in both summer and winter and as a result have the chance to make new friends and enjoy new experiences that lead to your discovering which sport is best suited to you, I feel sorry for Japanese people who the school‘bukatsu’system has forced to concentrate on one sport alone. The system obviously does not realize what a massive waste it is to kill off all the multiple possibilities that should exist in people's lives.I do not say that it is wrong to be serious about a sport, just that surely we can afford to have a little more freedom and range of expression in our lives. This applies to other areas, not only sport. When my wife suggested to this lad that rather than trying to change the thinking of her at-times infuriatingly stubborn husband, he would be better off setting up his own club that he could run according to his principles, his immediate response was that he did not have anything near the required energy for that.My gut reaction to this statement is simple: "if you can't do it yourself, at least stop criticising those people who are doing it".

Many visitors to my blog probably have the impression that my NPO is making little progress in its efforts to promote grass playing fields in schools and grassed local parks.Hardly surprising, as I seem to spend most of my time complaining about the false understanding of grass that is common in Japan. But yesterday, as we approach the end of the first year of this project, I decided to make a list of our projects. There are 15 actually underway at present, five more in the pipeline for 2006 onwards, and the possibility of ten or more as a result of speeches I have made at various events. A look at the 15 underway reveals the smallest one as only 200sqm (a courtyard at a local primary school, success to lead to serious consideration of converting the entire school grounds to grass from next year) and the largest at 6,500sqm, this being the entire grounds of a junior high-high school due to open in April 2006. Then there is the large sports facility in North Hiroshima that we helped the local staff convert 1,000sqm to grass this year. They are deadly serious about embarking on a 2-3 year project to convert the entire playing area to grass from 2006. One scheduled project for 2006 worth special notice is a riverbank park project that we will do on direct contract with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. In addition to a top-quality turf area, we plan to convert a large portion of the available area to more-than-adequate quality grass merely by mowing it 20 or more times a year. If this succeeds, it could be applied to riverbanks nationwide. My keynote speech to a national sports club summit arguing that grass playing surfaces perfectly adequate for the promotion of grass roots sport (pun intended) can be provided quite easily and at a surprisingly low cost struck a genuine cord with many participants, many of whom plan to visit Tottori early next year to see our efforts at first-hand with a view to converting their own playing fields to grass. This is also incredibly encouraging news. These sports clubs are located in places as close as Shimane and as far as Kyushu, Shikoku, Gifu, and Shizuoka. One very sad point is that here in our home base of Tottori, there is only one project in which we are working directly with the local City administration. Other local projects entail co-operation with the prefectural government and the local branch of the central ministry mentioned above. Yet, this one project could yet fail due to the poor response from the City administration.

15-year old Mao Asada will not be representing her country at the Turin Olympics in early-2006, despite having recently won the figure skating title at the most recent Grand Prix Final.Yes, it seems a shame that she can not attend the Olympics but we should remember that Japan was one of the 108 countries that in June 1996 voted in favour of the age limit requiring that Olympians have turned 15 by June 30 of the year prior to the Games, due to the possible adverse affects of excessive repetition of jumps in training before the bones are strong enough. A genuine concern for the excessive burden on children's bodies lies behind the rule, a concern I support. However, most people related to sport here in Japan, which exhibits an almost pathological disregard for the well-being of children's bodies in its approach to training, would probably strongly support making an exception for young Mao.In a related but separate news story, I point out the coverage of a "5-year old table tennis star in the making" on today's evening news. There really are no age limits in Japan.

It is almost the year-end, and Tottori is suffering one of the harshest cold snaps for many years. Today, we have a blizzard outside, with about 50cm of snow in the garden. The official report tells us that the maximum temperature today was 2C. but I suspect it did not top 0C at any time today. In NZ, where I grew up, Christmas and the New Year are in mid-summer and some of my fondest childhood memories ore of holidays by the beach at New Year. The long summer holiday for schools also comes at year-end, and with the end of the school year, meaning no homework or reports. The 6-7 week summer holiday is as close to paradise as it gets for school kids. As I cruise into my 50s, I realize that I have lived more than half my life in the northern hemisphere. Most of that has been in Japan, with short spells in the US and Hong Kong. I have found no real problem adapting to the at-times quite different customs of these countries. However, one thing I have never been able to become accustomed to is mid-winter Christmas. Perhaps it is the strength of those childhood memories, but despite my being aware from a glance at the calendar that it is now nearly Christmas, I do not feel any emotions concerning the period of the year.Thinking about this made me understand the inability of parents and public servants, who have spent all their lives with dirt playing fields and school grounds, to understand emotionally how much better grass is for children and to comprehend really the need for grass playing fields.Perhaps they will be able to naturally accept grass as part of school life only if and when I feel an emotional attachment to a mid-winter Christmas. The road ahead is long.Nil bastardi carborundum.

I was born in a country with four seasons and now live in a country with four seasons, but spent the two years immediately prior to coming to Tottori almost totally protected from the natural environment. We lived in a hotel suite in Pacific Place, a major urban development project in mid-Hong Kong Island. Having no kitchen, we ate out every day, the windows of the suite did not open so we hardly came into contact with the fresh air, and Pacific Place provided every possible amenity we needed through the more than 300 shops (department store, supermarket, food and beverage outlets, bookstores, pharmacies, boutiques, etc) and cinemas, training gym, pool, etc. In our room, everything was one phone call away: new sheets, new towels, the cleaning staff, late night snacks, etc. If convenience is the benchmark, our lifestyle was pretty close to perfection. But we grew sick of this totally artificial life after less than two years. For two years, we lost touch with the season, at times even not really knowing what month it was. Now, here in the country, my day starts at 7AM with my taking our two dogs for their morning walk by the lake one minute from home. Thus, I feel the changing seasons at first-hand. FYI, the temperature at 7AM this morning was -3C. I had trouble adapting to the seasonal changes in the first 2-3 years, struggling to remain healthy at times. But now, my animal instincts are back in force and I find massive enjoyment in the changing seasons. I am no longer capable of living in a big city.

My keynote speech at the national sports club summit passed off without major incident. After spending 20 years in New Zealand, a country that is a paradise in terms of the environment for grassroots sport, I moved to and now live in Japan, a country that in comparison is a nightmare for grassroots sport. Thus, this summit was an excellent opportunity to drive home my message.Quite simply, the message is that in Japan:1) There is too much training and training sessions are too long;2) Children are forced to play one sport all year-round; and 3) Children are being killed every year by being subjected to excessive training in conditions highly conducive to heat exhaustion. However, the most active debate at present concerns the effective use of public sports facilities, which are being opened to management by private organizations from next April.I have talked previously about the differences between NZ and Japan concerning training, but there are also significant differences in the type of sports facilities available. The concept of a pyramid structure in participation sport is common, but this concept does not exist in sports facilities in Japan, where there are ample top-level facilities but negligible local grass playing fields, quite unlike NZ. The massive number of low-level grass fields in NZ used for training and friendly matches means there is no real problem of excessive demand for top-level facilities. Thus, sports participants at the bottom of the pyramid are well catered for.My approach to low level sports development is extremely simple: build grass playing fields everywhere possible. Using Greenfield and its \50/sqm annual maintenance budget as my major weapon, this stubborn Kiwi will continue his campaign to promote change among Japan's sports clubs.

Despite my not really believing that I am qualified to take on such a task, I find myself preparing to make the keynote address at a national local sports club summit being held in Hiroshima tomorrow and Saturday. The title: Building the right foundation impossible under current conditions.I firmly believe that local sports clubs are the only answer to the ills inflicted on Japanese sport by the misguided school "bukatsu" system. Unfortunately, many local clubs are run along effectively the same guidelines, greatly lowering any expectations for a genuine improvement. Drastic reform is clearly needed.I doubt anyone will sleep through my speech. The reaction will be either "Fuck off back to your own country" or "He's right, let's do something similar at our club".I do not really mind which one it is. I have no intention of going back to New Zealand, nor do I intend to change the way in which my sports club is run. Then on Sunday, I head to Yonago for a friendly match between my rugby club (Koyama RFC) and a local team, with the most fervent wish that the confidence we gained from the wonderful performance against YCAC last week will enable me to report our club's first ever victory when I return on Monday.Altiora Peto

The public toilet we first requested the City Council to install approximately 1 year ago is to be installed today, at last. With several thousand city residents using Greenfield at large events, the two portable toilets we currently have are totally insufficient, so we asked the City Council to install a toilet. The initial reaction was that it was not a City park, therefore they could not do anything, or that the limitation of use to members of a specific group raised doubts as to whether it was actually a park. Once the mayor visited the park several months ago to see at first-hand the manner in which residents were free to use the park, things started moving in earnest. Now, the project serves as a model case on how residents and the administration can cooperate, with a healthy degree of tension between the two groups.I look forward to the reaction to the new toilet from the regular visitors to Greenfield.

Last Saturday, my rugby club went on its first domestic tour. Our destination was Yokohama, our opposition was YCAC, Japan's oldest rugby club and the team who visited us here in Tottori last October to be our opponents in our club's first ever match. Last year, we lost by the huge margin of 0-77. It is still only 2 years since our club was formed, the opposition was the same, we still have many members who have only recently started playing rugby, and we still train only 1-2 times a week. The best we coudl expect was to put up a good fight, with another serious loss a distinct possibility.Much to everyone's surprise, a team that trains only 2 times a week lost by the smallest possible margin of one point, going down to a 14-15 loss.We were the equals of the opposition in all facets of the game, and made them dig very deep for the victory. This match will provide massive benefits for our club.In the bus on the 10-hour drive home, one key player mentioned to me that he had harboured serious doubts about whether our team could actually improve with such limited training (he is a product of the Japanese school sports system). He is now totally convinced that limited training on grass can and does lead to a significant improvement.
