認識改革が前進・One more small step forward
半年前はコの状態の河川敷を半年後は月二回芝刈りするだけでこの状態になった芝生広場この存続を巡って、2－3日前から地元の市役所と担当している国交省と話し合いをした結果、存続をする結論に達しました。最初は利用者が少なくて予算をつけるのは難しいとの理由で止めることを検討しているとのことだったが、芝生は立ち入り禁止が常識の日本ではもっと宣伝をして利用を促進しないといけないのが行政の方で理解され、これからの維持管理体制を協議して行くところまでたどり着きました。我々が目指す認識改革が一歩一歩前進してます。In a mere six months from the first photo (May 2007), one area of the river bank here was transformed into the state in the second photo, all done solely by mowing the grass once every two weeks.I spent the last couple of days in discussions with officials in the local city office and the offices of the relevant Ministry over whether or not to continue with this project. The result first: it is to be continued.Initially the government officials were of the view that there was not sufficient use to justify the budget but they understood my argument that, given the general practice in Japan of prohibiting the use of grass areas, there needed to be a concerted PR effort to encourage residents to use this park. We are now at the stage of discussing the actual maintenance of the park.One step at a time in our efforts to transform Japan's general perception of grass.

聖地とは？・Hallowed ground?
今日のサンスポにこのようなコメントが書いてありました（http://www.sanspo.com/rugby/top/rg200801/rg2008012801.html）[b]「秩父宮の芝に大ブーイング」[/b] 聖地と呼ばれる秩父宮のグラウンド状態にこの日、各チームから大ブーイングが起きた。中央付近を中心に芝生が枯れ、一部は土が露出している状態に足を滑らせる選手が続出。神戸製鋼のＳＨ後藤主将は「日本のラグビーを盛り上げるためには、この状態はナンセンス」。三洋電機のＣＴＢ榎本主将も「けが人が出ることが心配。最高の舞台で、最高のプレーをみせたい」と不安を口にした。」問題は維持管理をやっている業者の技術ではなくて、利用が多すぎるだけです。世界有数の大都会｢東京｣、秩父宮以外に芝生グラウンドが極端に少なく、東京でラグビーといえば、秩父宮になっちゃいます。これを改善しない限り、この｢聖地｣であるべき場所が一番大事な選手の間でこのような評判になり、日本ラグビーの発展が難しくなるばかりです。 Today's Sanspo, a local sports newspaper, contained the following article.Complaints about Prince Chichibunomiya turf Each team that played matches at this ground, known as rugby's Hallowed Turf, lodged bitter complaints about the ground condition. The turf is badly damaged in the central area of the ground, with the earth exposed, causing many players to lose their footing. Goto, the fly-half and captain of Kobe Steelers, said, "it is stupid to talk about improving the standard of rugby in Japan with grounds in this condition", while Enoki, the centre and vice-captain of Sanyo Electric, added that "we are constantly worried about getting injured. All we want to do is show the best possible play on the best possible surface."The problem lies not with the technical ability of the turf maintenance company but with the totally excessive use. There is a critical shortage of grass rugby fields here in Tokyo, one of the world's leading metropolises, meaning that any top rugby in Tokyo has to be played on this ground. Unless Japan does something to redress this situation, Japan's "Hallowed Turf" will continue to receive this sort of criticism from the players, who are the most important people, and the development of rugby here will be seriously hindered.

やはり芝生が良い・The benefits of grass
今日はとても嬉しい知らせが入りまして、気分が最高です。去年の夏場、宇治市にある京都大学ラグビー場を芝生化したことはここで紹介済みですが、コーチからはこのメッセージが届きました。「芝生化の効果で大学は関西のＢリーグで4位となりました。たかが関西Ｂリーグの4位ですが、当チームにとってはこれまでの20年で最高の順位です。あらためて御礼申し上げます」自分のことの様に嬉しいです。素直に。書き込みしてい今でも微笑みが止まらないです。Today I am in a wonderful mood, having received some very good news. Readers of this blog will know that last year we helped convert the rugby ground at Kyoto University to grass and today the coach sent me the following message by e-mail:"Thanks to the grass field, our team came 4th in the Kansai B League this season. It is only 4th in the Kansai B League, but this is Kyoto University's highest position for 20 years. Thank you again for all your help."I am as happy as if it were my own team, genuinely pleased. I can't stop smiling to myself as I type this.

次元が低すぎる・It beggars belief
今日のテレビでどこかの激安スーパーの取材が流れていて、聞こえてくるコメントの次元が低すぎて、情けなくなります。「あら、こんな値段で０００が帰るって、しんじれらない」とか「そりゃ、安いに越したこと無いわね』とか。一般常識的な値段の何分の一で売っている商品の材料も激安で、質なんてどうでもいいというものが使われていることに気付かない次元の低さ。これは生産者のせいではなくて、あそこまで安い値段で生産させる流通業界のせいであるということを付け加えておきます。消費者から聞きたい台詞が｢安いのに子越したことがない｣よりは｢少々値段が高くても体にいい材料で作ってあることに越したことがない｣であります。首を長くして待っていますが、あまり期待できない様な気がします。As I work today, I can hear some television reporter pratting on about a super cheap supermarket somewhere and the comments are at a pathetically low level.Comments such as "I can hardy believe such-and-such a product is selling for such a cheap price" or "of course, the cheaper the better" (this from a shopper).These comments are pathetic as they show a total ignorance of the fact that any product selling for a price way below the accepted normal price must be made of as cheap as possible raw materials with no regard for the quality of the materials or the product. I add the comment that this is not the responsibility of the producer, but of the retail company that forces the producer to make the product at this ludicrously low price.What I want to hear from consumers is not "the cheaper the better" but "quality is most important, even if it means a slightly higher price".There seems little chance of that happening any time soon.

このぐらい厳しくても良い・And so they should be!
南半球のオーストラリアは今真夏。メルボーンでは昨日の気温が22℃。町中で若夫婦が生後間もない赤ちゃんを駐車場の車の中に30分以上置いたまま買い物していたそうです。近く｢保護者責任遺棄罪｣で起訴されることになった。やはり先進国は違いますね。It is mid-summer in Australia now and the temperature in Melbourne is in the low 20C range. In the city recently, a young couple left their new-born baby unattended in their car for over 30 minutes while they went shopping.They are to be charged with leaving their child unsupervised.Things certainly are different in advanced nations.

新年早々の嬉しい出来事・A welcome turn of events early in the New Year
今が本格的に芝生化運動に取り組んで早々3年目になり、いわゆる｢鳥取方式による芝生化｣の事例が80数件になりました。関東周辺、北陸、東海、関西方面、四国、中国五県、九州に渡って行政、教育機関、スポーツクラブ、民間企業等々様々な方から問い合わせがあり、着実に進んでいる状況です。 地元では県庁とはとても健全な関係が出来ており、色々な事案で相談を受けて、協力をさせてもらっています。 ここで度々書き込みはしてありますが、残念なことに今までは地元の地役所とあまり良い関係を築くことは出来ませんでした。 でも今年は違うかも知れないです。昨日市の公園担当者から連絡があり、市の街区公園の総合見直しをし、これからは住民団体と協力して公園を住民の提案通り維持管理をすることを検討しているそうです。順次芝生にして行く計画を立てたくて、それには我々の協力と助言を頂きたいと言って来ました。当然のこと、協力をさせてもらいます。これからは鳥取の公園が変わる可能性が出て来ました。Three years have past since we started our grass project and there are more than 80 locations that have adopted the our approach to grass maintenance. We receive frequent calls for advice from local governments, educational institutions, sports clubs, private companies, etc. from places as far-flung as the Kanto area (centred on Tokyo), Hokuriku, Tokai, Kansai, Shikoku, Chugoku, and Kyushu. Progress is steady and satisfying.Here at home, we have a very healthy relationship with the prefectural government, with whom we work closely on a range of different projects.As readers will know from several previous posts here, we have unfortunately not been able to build the same strong relationship with the local city administration.But this is set to change in 2008.Yesterday I was called by the city official in charge of local parks. It seems that the government is developing a new approach to park development and maintenance involving close ties with local residents' associations, working with them to look after a number of local parks. They officially asked if we could cooperate with the government both in technical areas and with advice on how to present this to the residents' associations. Naturally my answer was YES. Tottori's parks may finally change for the better.Oh, Frabjous day!

危機・CRISIS
昨日は我々のラグビークラブが横浜のYC&ACで試合をしました。まずはさんぼさんと彼の仲間、航勇さんと彼の仲間、後僕の東京の友人数人の助っ人の方々にお礼を言います。本当に有り難うございました。試合には負けましたが試合を通じてとても大事につながりが出来て、改めてラグビーの素晴らしさを実感した一日でした。危機はこれではないです。危機は試合会場となったYC&ACがクラブの中心となっている百年以上守り続けて来た天然芝生のグラウンドを利用が激しくて、いい状態に保つのはもう無理だとの理由で人工芝にすることを数週間以内に決定するそうです。ここは単なる一つのスポーツクラブではないです。このクラブは芝生スポーツの代名詞とでも言うべきサッカーとラグビーを日本の導入したクラブでもあり、天然芝生の良さを百年も前から何万人の日本人に味わう機会を与え続けてクラブでもあります。まだまだ維持管理の面で打てる手があるうちは僕はあらゆる手を使って、時分の体を張ってでも人工芝導入を阻止したいと思っています。今は勝負のときです。This weekend, our rugby club paid its annual visit to Yokohama to play the YC&AC Gents. I would like to offer my heart-felt thanks to the many rugby friends who turned up to help us field a full team. Although we lost the match, we all were able to build some close ties with our team mates, reconfirming the best feature of rugby as a sport.However, this is not the crisis to which I refer in the title.The crisis is thatYC&AC is on the verge of deciding to replace the natural grass field it has protected for over 100 years, to artificial turf because of the difficulties of maintaining the grass in a decent state as a result of the intensive use.YC&AC is no ordinary sports club. In existence since 1868, the first year of the Meiji Era, YC&AC introduced the two main outdoor grass sports of rugby and soccer to Japan and has helped tens of thousands of Japanese players enjoy the benefits of playing on natural grass for over one hundred years. As long as there are still some unexplored areas with regard to maintaining the grass turf, I will take all possible measures within my power to stop the introduction of artificial turf at YC&AC. It is time for action.

明けましてお目出度う・Happy New Year
2008年最初の朝がご覧の通りです。今年も新しい芝生文化の定着に向けて全力投球です。また、断酒生活が今年で5年目に入りますが、油断は禁物です。両面で成功するよう頑張ります。The first morning of 2008 brought the scene in today's photo. This year I am committed to succeeding in spreading the gospel according to grass and to continuing my life without alcohol, now entering my 5th year.
