調べることなく・Couldn't be bothered to check
ある自治体が町民運動公園の多目的運動場にある天然芝生が利用に耐えられないので改修を検討始めました。年間利用が150時間前後だそうで、今までの日本の芝生では確かに耐えられません。町役場の担当者達が一生懸命に考えて、会合を開くなどして辿り着いた結論が「人工芝」です。 この場所から車で1時間程度の距離にある写真の別な天然芝生球技場があります。ここの年間利用が700時間以上です。改修の総事業費が数千万円でmで、毎年1千数百万円以上の維持管理費が掛かっていますので決して低コストではありませんが改修前は年の半分は閉鎖されて、練習も許されなくて、年間利用が30時間程度しない状態から今は1年中、練習も試合も出来て、悪くてもこの状態を考えれば行政の方々が良く口にする「費用対効果」の観点からは決して高額でもないです。そろそろ５年目となりますが大型補修や改修は必要になったことはありません。大変残念なことにこの役場の方々がこのグラウンドを見ることなく、管理団体に相談することなく、会合では天然芝生の資料を配ることなく（人工芝の資料があったらしいが）人工芝に決定しました。金額は言いたくありませんが写真の天然芝生より高いことだけ言います。最初から「天然芝生ではダメで人工芝しかないと決めていた」と担当者が告白しました。住民の血税を使う時はもう少し多方面的に調査をし、出来るだけ多くの情報を入手してもらいたいです。 A city office not to be named started considering the renewal of a multi-purpose sports field because the natural turf previously installed was not able to withstand the "heavy" use. Apparently the ground is used for around 150 hours a year, and sports turf commonly used in Japan definitely would not be resistant to this use. The staff in charge held a few meetings and thought long and hard before reaching their conclusion: artificial turf. The sports field shown here (is not the one in question) is approximately one hour by car from their office and is used for in excess of 700 hours each year. It cost several million yen to refurbish and over ¥10m is spent in maintenance every year, so it is clearly not cheap but whereas prior to refurbishment this ground was closed for 6 months each year, that no training was permitted, and that annual use was around 30 hours, the ground is open all year-round, training is now no problem at all, and annual use exceeds 700 hours, as mentioned above. When considered from the viewpoint of the cost-benefits, it is also very clearly not expensive. It is nearly 5 years since the ground was redone and no major work has been necessary yet. It is highly unfortunate that the nearby local body officials neither visited this ground nor consulted with the organisation managing the grounds before nor even distributed any decent material concerning natural turf at their meetings (though I understand there was material about artificial turf), before reaching the conclusion that artificial turf was the only solution. I do not want to mention the actual cost of the artificial turf but will so go far as to say that it cost more than the refurbishment done above. I really wish that public servants would make every effort to gather all possible relevant material when making decisions on how to spend taxpayers' money.

登場・Here he is
去年から度々ここで文字で登場していた和歌山県の芝生少年が地元新聞「紀伊民報」のお正月の特別号で大きく取り上げられましたので、彼のお許しを頂いたのでここで紹介します。写真をクリックすると大きく表示されます。 僕にとってはこの少年に出会えたこと去年の大きな財産です。彼の学校が何としても今年中は芝生にしなければいけないと考えている今日この頃です。The young lad in Wakayama Prefecture I have talked about several times since the middle of last year was featured in a full-page article in the local rag where he lives, so with his permission I reproduce the article. Meeting young Naoki was without doubt one of the highlights for me in 2009.Hardly a day goes by without me thinking of how I can assist him in getting his school grounds converted to grass.

視察の後は？・And then?
2009年の一年間に芝生の視察のために鳥取に来られた団体・自治体をまとめてみたら何と33都道府県から169団体・自治体になっています。その全容がグリーンスポーツ鳥取のHPに掲載されています。この中にはスポーツクラブもいくつか入っていますが大半が県・市・町行政の職員や議員でした。当然この費用は全て税金です。当然来られた方々全員が自分の地元での芝生化を実施を視野に入れて視察に来られています。ここの訪問されている方の中に地元での芝生化に関心がある方がへのお願いです。その一覧表を確認して下さい。 地元の自治体が来られた実績がある場合は視察に来られた部署に連絡し、芝生化の取り組む状況を聞いてみて下さい。もし進んでいない場合その理由を聞いてみるといいでしょう。 When I collated all the groups to visit Tottori last year to study our grass project, the final number came to 169 groups from 33 prefectures. The full list is on the Green Sports Tottori home page.There are several sports clubs included in the list but the majority were groups from local government bodies throughout Japan, either staff or elected councilors. Naturally, every person came here with the express intention of promoting grass in their own home town.I have a request for all visitors to this site who are interested in having grass playgrounds and parks in their own town.Please check the list for visitors from your location.If someone from your local government visited us last year, perhaps you may wish to contact them and ask about what progress they have made in converting grounds to grass.If there has been no progress yet, you would not be out of place to ask the reason.

お叱り・Told off
最近ある訪問者からGSTが「鳥取方式」を正しく説明していない結果としてかなり多くの方々が「芝刈りするだけでいい」との認識を持ってしまったことになっているという叱りを受けました。氏曰く「講演でもインタービューでも詳しく維持管理作業を説明した方がいい」そうです。おそらくこの方の意見が正しいと思います。確かに講演やインタビューではあまり具体的にどのような維持管理作業が必要かに触れることはありません。 でもそれには訳があります。講演やマスコミのインタビューの目的はそれではないからです。目的は至って単純です。講演の目的は「芝生に関心はあるものの芝生化は難しくて出来ないと思っている人に対して「決してそうではなく、発想を変えれば十分に可能である、又、芝生にはこれだけ多くの利点がある」との認識を持ってもらうことです。理想は講演やインタビューを聴いた団体・自治体の担当者が実際に芝生化に取り組む段階でちゃんと相談してもらうことです。その時点で、芝生化される場所の情報（面積、利用内容、利用者数，予算等々）をふまえて、その場所に一番合っている施工法と維持管理を提案します。相談もなしにちょっとの知識で実施する方が問題だと思いますし、仮にHPや講演で細かい説明をしたとしても自分たちの勝手な判断で大事な部分を落としたりして，結局同じ失敗に終わります。一番気に食わないのは我々からちゃんとしたアドバイスを受けずに、我々が伝えた相当重要な情報を度外視して実施された芝生化が失敗に終わり、その周辺の人々の間では「鳥取方式が失敗した、やはり余り良くないじゃないか」という意見が広まることです。我々が直接関わっていて失敗したならばまだ納得はできるが他人の失態による失敗で我々に対する信用が落ちるのはどうも納得出来ません。愚痴を言い出したらきりがないのでこの辺で止めておきます。A frequent visitor to this blog recently scolded me for the fact that many people have the impression that we state publicly that grass is possible to prepare merely by mowing, as a result of my failure to offer correct explanation of the so-called Tottori method.According to him, I should offer full explanation of turf maintenance in my speeches and interviews to the media.He may well be quite correct, in that I definitely do not give much detail of the necessary maintenance work when giving speeches or interviews.But there is logic in what I am doing. The key issue is that this is not the objective of speeches or interviews. All my speeches and interviews are aimed at people who may have some interest in grass but who firmly believe that it is too difficult to maintain and my objective is to convince them that actually this is not the case, that with a slight change in the way of thinking, grass is achievable almost anywhere, and that there are multiple benefits from grass playing fields.The ideal situation is one in which a person listens to one of my speeches and contacts us for advice when he has a specific site to be converted to grass. Once we have all the necessary information (area, number of users, details of the use, budget, etc.), we can submit a detailed proposal of the method of installation and the necessary maintenance work best suited to that site.The problem we face increasingly is that of people going ahead with grass conversion with only limited knowledge and without asking for detailed advice and I firmly believe that even were we to provide detailed advice on our HP, still some people would use it selectively and omit key elements, leading to the same failures as we see now.What really gets up my nose is when people ask for advice and then proceed with the project having chosen for their own reasons to ignore particularly critical information. When the project ends in failure, residents in that area know only that this project, carried out according to the Tottori method as far as they are aware, failed. The natural conclusion for them is that the Tottori method is actually not very good. I can live with failure when we are directly involved but I find it difficult to accept it when my credibility is damaged by other people's failure.I could go on all night bitching about it but really can't be bothered.

6周年記念日・6th Anniversary
今日は僕の6周年記念日です。普通は記念日と聞くと結婚を思いつく人が多いでしょうが昨年は結婚15年目となりました。 実は6年前の今日1月15日の夕方7時から始まった鳥取断酒会の例会に見学者として初めて参加しました。その数日前の夜中に冷や汗をかく程酒が絡むひどい内容の悪夢で目が覚め、その時点で半年は自分で酒を断とうと頑張っていたのですがもはや自分１人では続けるのは限界と気付かされました。 翌月に正式に入会し、その週から出来る限り毎週の例会出席で培った仲間との強い絆がその後の生活の中でたまに襲いかかる酒の誘いを断る大きな武器になって来ました。一日一日飲まないのは自分自身の意志の問題ではあるが毎週の木曜日に仲間の元気な顔を見て、又、一週間飲まなかった自分の顔を見せて、皆で皆を励まし合う例会が生活の大事な部分を占めるようになりました。 断酒で何が一番いいかと聞かれると答えが極めて簡単です。妻の安心しきっている顔を毎日見られることです。Today is my 6th anniversary.The word anniversary is usually prefaced with "wedding" but we were married 15 years ago. The anniversary I am celebrating today is the 6th anniversary of my first participation in the local DanShuKai (an equivalent of Alcoholics Anonymous). Several days earlier, I had been woken by a terrifying nightmare involving alcohol, a brutal reminder that I had reached the limits of my own efforts to stop drinking, which had been continuing for about six months.I officially joined the group early the next month and the strong ties forged between the members of this group at our weekly meetings, which I attend whenever I am in Tottori, are now a critical weapon in rejecting the temptation that inevitably arises every now and then.Staying clean every day is a matter for personal willpower but seeing the happy and healthy faces of my fellow members and showing them that I too have stayed clean for the latest week, in this way offering each other our support, has become an integral part of my life.When asked what is the best thing to come out of staying sober, the answer is easy: being able to see every day my wife's totally relaxed expression.

ヨーロッパの幼稚園
このブログをよく訪問される方が去年ヨーロッパ園舎視察をされ、その様子が彼のブログでとても分かり易く紹介されています。一番印象強かったのは園庭の芝生です。どれを見ても日本で言う「雑草｣が沢山生茂っている場所ばかりですが全てが子ども達にとって最高の遊び場に見えます。それで良いですよね。

準備をしっかりしましょう・Prepare properly, please
芝生化に対する関心はかなり全国的に定着しつつありますが実施に向けて動き出されている団体や自治体が多くいらっしゃるかと思います。Interest toward grass playing fields is now well established throughout Japan and many local bodies are starting to implement projects.去年は準備不足・勉強不足・知識不足で取り組まれた自治体は少なくありません。この写真はその一例です。園庭の一部に園児と保護者の努力で苗が丁寧に植えられています。この時は3ヶ月後に裸足で気持ちのよい芝生で遊べるとこの園児達は凄く期待していたでしょう。Unfortunately, many local bodies went ahead with local projects with a regrettable lack of preparation, groundwork, and knowledge. The play school in this photo is one such case. The kiddies and their parents have planted the grass seedlings very neatly, and it is easy to imagine the expectations the children had of being able to play barefoot on grass in 3 months or so.準備不足の結果として写真のように数ヶ月経ってから芝生がほとんど広まることなく、園庭が土のママになっているケースもかなりあるように思います。ここが失敗に終わった最大の原因は利用者一人当たりの面積不足です。我々が前から口酸っぱくして言い続けているのはポット苗移植による芝生化が成功するには保育園・幼稚園では一人当たり10m２が理想で、最低でも6～7m２が必要です。ここは園庭の一部しかやっていなくて、一人当たり1m２もありません。残念なことにこの保育園の芝生化はある市のホームページで「鳥取方式」による芝生化事例として紹介されています。The lack of preparation and knowledge in the local city officials running the project resulted in the grounds looking like this after several months, with almost no grass remaining. The first photo is on the city's HP as a shining example of the city's dedication to implementing the "Tottori" method of grass playing fields.こうならないためには行政の担当者達へのお願いです。取り組まれる前に一度鳥取までお越しになり、鳥取での芝生視察をして下さい。少し費用はかかりますがこの失敗例で無駄に使われた費用より遥かに少ない金額で正しい認識を持つことが出来ます。それを持って初めてまともな芝生化事業に取り組むことも出来ます。To prevent this from happening, I have a request to all local authorities: before you start the project, please make the effort to visit Tottori and participate in one of our grass tours. I am aware of the costs of visiting here but it is cheaper than the taxpayers' money spent on the failed case shown above. In addition, only by doing this tour will you get the necessary understanding of what our project is hoping to achieve. Then and only then will you be able to embark on a proper grass project in your hometown.正しい鳥取方式の一年にしたいです。I want this year to be one of successes.

犬と芝生・Dogs and grass
2～3日間は雪が降っていないので犬達が久しぶりに芝生でくつろげるようになった今日の我が家です。After a few days with no snow, the dogs could finally enjoy the grass in our backyard.数分後に様子を見に行ったら、今度はテニスボールを巡って大闘争になっていました。But within a few minutes, they had engaged on a major battle over a tennis ball.これも犬達に取ってのストレス発散になっている様で、その数分後は爆睡状態になりました。After having burnt off their stress, they are now sleeping peacefully.

あけまして
あけましてお目出度うございます去年の爆発的な芝生化の広まりでくたくたになったので年末は2週間程完全休養を取りました。家で風邪を引いた妻の看病をし、テレビでスポーツを観戦し、読みたかった本をゆっくり読み、元旦は前の晩から降り続いていた雪の中での初詣の後は愛犬プリとちかを思いっきり遊ばせました。身も心もとてもリフレッシュしています。今年もし全体での芝生化運動を続けますので宜しくお願い致します。
