よく分からないけど・You lost me!
東京では知事の公費出費を巡る裁判での判決はその一部を知事が返還しなければ行けないニュースを報道するマスコミがどの料亭を使ったかに焦点を当てていました。論点が見事にずれています。問題はとの仕事についての話し合いをどうして夜の料亭でするのかです。知事と担当幹部が業者を都庁に呼んで話をすれば良いだけの話です。全く話が違いますが、鳥取では小学校での集団ウイルス感染が発覚し、緊急の校長会議では学校で必要になったゾウキンやタオルの費用は誰が払うのかが活発に議論されたそうです。どれもこれも議論の次元が低過ぎて話にならないです。The verdict in a trial over public moneys spent by the Tokyo governor called for him to refund one portion to the public coffers, but in the report on this issue, the media spent quite a lot of time discussing the history of the restaurant used by the governor for some of his entertaining. The issue is not of what restaurant he used but of why the government officials did not ask the company staff to the government offices to discuss various policy issues. And now for something completely different!There was an outbreak of food-poisoning in primary schools here in Tottori recently. At the urgent headmasters' meeting called to discuss this issue, it seems that a significant portion of the time was used to discuss who will pay for the extra towels and cloths needed for the extra cleaning.The level of the media coverage and debate is too low.

機械から生まれるモノとは・Products
例の女性は生む機械発言の某大臣の弁解を聞いてさらにびっくりしました。「モノを生産する」と来たのではありませんか。国の将来を担うのは人間でも子供でもなく、モノだそうです 。この程度の認識を持っている大臣が少子化対策を担当しているようではもはや日本が終わりという実感が強く出る今日この頃です。ちなみに、僕は明日の午前中、住んでいる県の私立幼稚園代表者会合で園庭芝生化についてのプレゼンテーションをします。その中の何人が子供の健康を第一優先にし、芝生化を実施するのかが今から楽しみです。When attemping to explain his comment that women were merely machines to give birth, the cabinet minister came up with an even more surprising comment to the effect that the discussion was one of how to make "products". In his bizarre world view, those children who will be responsible for the future of this country are not human beings or even children. They are merely 'products'. Considering that a person with this low level of awareness is responsible for formulating policies to deal with the declining birth rate, I am even more pessimistic than before about Japan's future. Tomorrow i have a chance to make a presentation to the heads of the private kindergartens of the prefecture in which I live regarding converting their playgrounds to grass. I wonder how many of these heads will place top priority on the well-being of the children in their care and convert their playgrounds.

マスコミの大騒ぎ・Mass-media hysteria
某 湯沸かし器メーカーの製品不良が原因でこの20年間で21人もの人々が死亡する事件が今や毎日のトップニュースとなっています。それもそのはず。危ないと 分かっていて、起こさないのは至って簡単な原因ですので、その死が避けられました。 当然ですが、行政も経営者に対しての厳しい指導をしてます。 疑問の思うのは添付チャートに示されている日本体育協会発行の熱中症を起こさないためのガイドラインを無視した部活の指導者の行動により、1975年から 2001年までの26年の間、「特別の場合以外は運動を中止する」という注意があった気候条件で135人もの小中高校生が死亡していますが、それに対して はマスコミが見事な程騒がないし、行政も部活の指導の改善命令や指導が一切無いです。 僕の結論は日本で子供の命は大事ではないからですが間違っていますでしょうか。 The 21 deaths over the past 20 years resulting from faulty water heaters are dominating the news these days, as should be the case. The defect was obvious and easily fixed. These deaths were eminently avoidable. Quite naturally, the government is making its presence felt with severe administrative orders aimed at the maker. What I do not understand is why the mass-media has made no fuss over the 135 primary, junior high, and high school students to have died of heat exhaustion while engaged in bukatsu sports activities in the 26-year period from 1975-2001, all of which occurred in climatic conditions falling in the highest risk area of a guideline issued by the Japanese Sports Association. Neither has there been any move by the government requiring improvements or amendments to the manner in which bukatsu is administered. The only conclusion I can reach is that the lives of children are not considered important here in Japan.

危険かも知れない・Possibility of injury
先日は今年の夏場に校庭の完全芝生化を計画している小学校から野球を指導者が小学生数人を連れて来て、グリーンフィールドの芝生の上で練習をしてみ ました。どうやら、その指導者は芝生が濡れている時、打球が取りづらくなり、子供達が怪我をするかも知れないという心配があったらしくて、その感触を試し てみたいという話でした。 確かにそういう可能性がありますが、それはあくまでも大人の理屈だけであって、なれの問題だと僕は反論しました。 だってちょっと考えてみて下さい。今まで転べば怪我（出血）をする固い土の上でずっと練習や試合をやらせて来ている訳ですね。その時の怪我で 当然だと思う「じゃ、土を辞めようよ」という結論に達していません。本当に子供達のことを最優先に考えていたのなら、そうなったはずです。 土よりは芝生の方が 子供の身体に優しいです。ボールがどうバウンドをするかはすぐ慣れる範囲内のことです。 まずは子供のことを優先に行動しましょう。 A couple of days ago, the baseball coach from a primary school that plans to convert its grounds to grass this year, brought several kids from the baseball team to Greenfield to let them experience playing on grass. It seems that he was concerned that the unpredictable bounce of a baseball on wet grass could cause injuries for the fielders. Of course, that is always a possibility, but I countered that this argument is based solely on adult logic. When one considers that generations of children have been forced to train and play on hard dirt that causes bleeding every time you fall over, I argue that anyone putting the well-being of children first would naturally have reached the conclusion that we should do away with dirt grounds. Grass is safer for children than is dirt, and they will soon learn to judge the way a ball will bounce once they get used to grass.<> Why not put the children first, eh?

気持ちのいい負け・A loss I can live with
今日は神戸で100年以上の歴史を誇るラグビークラブKRACのチームが鳥取に来て、我が湖山RFCと初の交流試合をしました。相手は190センチ110キロ級の選手をずらりと並んでいて、ラグビー大国のニュージーランドやオーストラリアやフィジー出身者が多くて、かなり我々が不利かと思われた試合開始一分早々でトライを取られたときは「マジヤバい」と思ったが、あのグリーンフィールドを活動拠点にしている湖山のラガーマンはそう簡単につぶれません。あそこからずっと互角の試合展開で一進一退、激しくなるタックルやラック・モールでのぶつかり合いの連続で、後一歩でトライを取ることが出来なくて、我々が集中力を切らした瞬間を突かれて、結局は3トライで負けました。でも、100年の歴史の相手と3年の歴史のKRFCとの力の差はほぼゼロという実感が強く残る試合でした。やはり、今のやり方（いわゆるキウィースタイル）がここ日本でも十分通用するという確信を得ることが出来る一日でした。Today, Koyama RFC hosted for the first time the KRAC, a club team based in Kobe with a history of over one hundred years. The opposition boasted many players over 190cm and in excess of 110kg, with many from the rugby powers of NZ, Aus, and Fiji. We seemed to be at a significant disadvantage, and the outlook was grim indeed when the opposition scored within 2 minutes of the start. But KRFC does not give in that easily. The rest of the match was a closely-contested, tough and bruising affair, with neither team taking a step back and the rucks, mauls, and tackles gradually increasing in intensity. We let our concentration slip on 2 more occasions, paying on both with a try. The final result was 0-15.Losing is no fun, but today we proved that the 3-year old KRFC can foot it with a team from a club with a 100-year history. I left the ground with a renewed sense that our training style (Kiwi style) definitely does work even here in Japan.

現実との格差・Divorced from reality
今日は子供達のタグラグビーブロック大会。以前お伝えした通り、年齢が若過ぎて、県大会に5-6年生ばかりの相手を抑えて優勝を奇跡的に成し遂げた湖山RFCのジュニアーチームが単独での参加は認められなかったので、他のクラブとの合同チームで参加したが、接戦もあり、ハット・トリックもあり、大変健闘はしたものの力不足で全国大会に駒を進めることが出来なかった。帰る直前に協会のタグラグビー担当者から「みんなでトライ！：タグラグビーを教える指導者のためのガイドブック」が配られました。家に帰りめくってみたらとても日本でのラグビー事情を知っている人にとってはきっと違和感のある映像ばかりが目に飛び込んでできました。 全ての写真がきれいな芝生の上でのプレイとなっています。でも、日本中のタグラグビーチームの何パーセントが芝生の上で練習をしているでしょうか。多分10パーセント(おそらく１パーセント）未満ではないでしょうか。その事情を一番良く知っているはずの全国協会があえて芝生でやっている写真ばかりを載せて小雑誌を作成する狙いは何でしょう。物事を皮肉な目で見るクセがついている僕に言わせると国際ラグビー連盟を含めての海外ラグビー関係者に対する2015年のワールドカップの開催権をなんとか取るためのPRの一環としての道具だろうと思っています。 世界のラグビー関係者の皆様、こんな写真を見て騙されるな！日本は底辺拡大に絶対不可欠である芝生のグラウンドを導入する気はないです。彼らが今まで通り、子供達を転んだら怪我をする固い土の上でさせ続けるつもりです。Today I attended the regional kids tag rugby tournament, the one that the KRFC kids team could not enter despite winning the prefectural tournament due to having too many members below the permitted age limit. Accordingly we entered a mixed team that, despite coming close in a couple of its games and having one member score a hat-trick of tries, failed to win the right to enter the national tournament.The RU official in charge of tag rugby handed all team officials copies of a brochure prepared by the national union with advice on how to coach tag rugby. When I looked at it on my return home, I realised that it was full of pictures that would seem really strange to anyone familiar with rugby in Japan.All the photos were of kids happily playing tag rugby on beautiful grass pitches, whereas in reality, perhaps less than 10% (1%?) of tag rugby teams train on grass pitches anything close to those in the photos on any regular basis.I started to wonder why the national union, which is fully aware of this fact, prepared a booklet with these misleading photos.Being naturally cynical, I suspect that they intend to use this booklet as one of their PR tools in the campaign to win hosting rights for the rugby world cup in 2015.World rugby officials, I implore you not to be fooled. Despite good grass fields being absolutely critical in helping develop rugby at the grass roots level, the Japanese rugby community will continue to force kids to play on hard, gravelly dirt, which causes injury every time you fall over.

地球温暖化・Global warming?
今年でグリーンフィールドが出来て4年目になります。過去の維持管理記録を見てみたら、12月の上旬にその年の最後の芝刈りをし、新年は3月半ばには初芝刈りとなっています。計画している訳ではなくて、冬芝の伸び具合で決める作業です。でも今年の冬は違います。12月は20日に最後に芝刈りをし、なんと今日1月10日に芝刈りをしました。それだけ昼間の気温が高い日が続いていた結果としか思えないです。よく考えたら、1月に入ってから昼間の最高気温が20℃近くなった日がありました。こういう予測できない部分があるから芝生作りが楽しいです。とにかく芝生の状態が最高です。近くに住んでいる方、是非遊びに来てみて下さい。We are now in the 4th year since completing Greenfield. A look back at the record of maintenance shows that in a normal year, the final mowing takes place in mid-December and the first mow of the new year in mid-March. This is not a set plan, but reflects the speed at which the winter grass grows.But this year is completely different. I mowed the grass on 20 December and, quite unbelievably, mowed it today, 10 January, the direct result of relatively warm daytime temperatures. On reflection, I can remember several days on which the high for the day was nearly 20C.This sort of unpredictability is what makes looking after grass so much fun.Anyway, the grass at Greenfield is in fabulous condition. I implore anyone living nearby to pop down to see for yourselves.

仲良し・Good friends
あけましておめでとうございます我が家の三匹の犬達が昨日山に行って、少ないと言われながらもしっかりと積もっている雪でたくさん遊び、帰りにいつもの通りグリーンフィルドでお友達と遊んでた後、家に帰って来た状態です。お嬢さん達がぐっすりと寝ているところ、まだ里親募集中のエビス君がちゃっかりと間に入り込みました。かなり落ち着いたエビス君ですが、可愛がって下さる方がいらっしゃれば、是非ご連絡ください。Yesterday, we took our three dogs to the mountains for a long play in the snow. Even though there is less snow than usual, they seemed pretty happy. Naturally we went to Greenfield in the evening to let them play with their friends. Here they are at home again.Princess and Chikadon are fast asleep, but wee Ebisu has found the ideal spot between his two big sisters. We are still looking for a good foster home for Ebisu, so if there is anyone out there that will love him and care for him, please contact us.
