(1-Japanese)中学・高校で習うレベルの英語動詞180個のボキャビルテキスト「30日完成 動詞力ブートキャンプ・ベーシック編スタンダード版」、5か月余りの苦難の末にやっとお盆休み中に完成する見込みとなりました・・。ぎっしり300ページほどです。お盆明けの17日に販売者に送る予定です。1.日本人学習者が間違いやすい動詞challengeやclaimの適切な使い方とか、私自身教わったことがなかった2.offerとprovideの語義の明確な違いとか、3.「拒絶の程度の強さの違い」だけではないrefuseとrejectの語法の違いとか・・・この筋の話が満載です^^(1-English)Now I have a prospect of completing the vocabulary building textbook on 180 English verbs which, I suppose, are taught at middle and high school English classes in Japan.I have reached the final stage of creating the textbook after having struggled for more than five months, while having other commitments as translation jobs or events involving my four children. The e-book, titled "Verb-power boot camp: 30 days of intensive learning on English verbs, for beginner to intermediate-level learners: standard version" will have about 300 pages full of texts. I am going to submit the textbook data to the sellingoperator on 17th, after the Bon vacation period next week. It contains plenty of information that will, I believe, serve Japanese-speaking English learners as:1.the proper usage of "challenge" or "claim", which represent the verbs which we are likely to use improperly; 2.clear indication of the distinction between "offer" and "provide";or 3.that of the difference of the usage between"refuse" and "reject" besides the matter of degree of severeness of the refusal, as commonly assumed. Issues 2. and 3. are those which I myself had never learned until I made researches this time.

(1-English)The "Verb-power boot camp" text is designed to dramaticallyimprove English ability through acquiring active command over 200verbs almost all of which we learn at middle or high school orduring preparation for university entrance examination in Japan. The book contains brief description of definitions and usages of180 of them, which involves analysis of patterns of sentences withthem. Proceeding this work consulting dictionaries I again realizethat the sentence pattern of English is basically "Subject-Verb-Object."And the "V", supposedly a regular verb, comes right after the subject and serves as the pivot of the sentence.

7日朝のNHKテレビ英会話で、ロサンゼルス観光でハリウッドを訪れてデジカメで記念撮影のシャッターを押してもらった女性がその場で「どんなふうに写ってるか見せて・・・わあいいねえ!」のような感じで"Let me see how it looks...oh it came out really nice!"と言っていてこれは使えると思いました。日常会話の決まり文句的な表現といってしまえばそれまでですが、わたし的に申し上げれば動詞let・see・look・come (out)がそれぞれこういう場合に使える!と意識すると頭に残りやすいと思いました。When I was watching an NHK TV English-learning program in Tuesday morningI got impressed with an expression uttered by a woman who supposedlywas visiting Holywood during her travel in Los Angeles. She got a picture of her at a major sightseeing spot andsaid "Let me see how it looks...oh it came out really nice!"Certainly it's just one of something like a fixed phrase in everydayconversation. Still I would like to suggest you should focus yourattention on the verbs used: let, see, look and come (out),assuming each of these can be used in a situation like this.I believe it serves to retain this expression in your memory.

"I'll be counting on you."16日朝のNHKの「リトル・チャロ」で習った表現の1つです。日本語で言うと「(あなたを)頼りにしてるよ」「頼んだよ」という感じです。動詞countを使った決まり文句ですが、日本語からの発想だと(「いま」頼りにしている、ということで)現在形を使いそうなところ、未来進行形で使うんですね。Above is a phrase I learned while watching "Little Charo", an Englishlearning TV program of NHK Educational Channel, on the Monday morning. This is one of English set phrases using the verb "count" and I wasimpressed with its tense being the future progressive. I supposein this case we Japanese speakers are likely to say in present formas "I count on you." because the speaker "presently" shows relianceon someone he or she speaks to.

(1-Japanese)「ご安心ください」を英語でどう表そうか、と思ったらまずDon't worryが思い浮かぶかもしれません。それでよい場合もあるのですが、ただビジネス系の多くの場合、特にライティングでは口語的すぎますよね。丁寧な言い方として、動詞restとassure(の受動態)を使ってPlease rest assured(of 名詞句/that節).あるいは、やや親しい相手に安心させるニュアンスではYou can rest assured (of 名詞句/that節)などということができます。(1-English)If you want to express what you say "Goanshin kudasai"in English, you may first come up with "Don't worry."("go" here is a sort of polite prefix added usually to a nounconsists of Chinese characters which actually refer to a certain action;"anshin" is a noun made up of two chinese characters, 安 and 心,the former indicate a state of being secure, safe, reassured, calm or easy and the latter refers to a heart or mind;"kudasai" is a polite form of ordering/requesting something usuallyadded to a verb or a noun that indicate an action.)While "Don't worry" makes sense and not improper in some occasions, I suppose it sounds too casual in most business-related situations, particularly when used in writing.A phrase I recommend you use involves two verbs, the latter of whichis a passive past particle, as "Please rest assured." followed by "of"with a noun phrase or a that clause. This phrase sounds polite and can be used in wider situations.Or you can say "You can rest assured." in the same sentense patternas "Please rest assured." when you want to get rid of uneasinessof someone who are more or less familiar to you on something.

(1-Japanese)14日の朝、4児の世話で殺伐と忙しい中だんながつけた3チャンネルの「コロンビア大学英語講座」で、フィットネスがテーマの授業をやっていて先生がこんな表現を紹介していました:What inspired you to exercise?動詞inspireが効いていて印象に残りました。日本語でいえば「あなたが運動しようと思ったきっかけは?」という感じだと思いますが、日本語からだと思いつきにくいかもしれないですね。(1-English)On Wednesday morning I was watching an NHK English-learning TV program titled "Columbia University English Course" which my husband turnedon amid the frenzy of looking after the four small kids before they went out for their respective schools. The program on that day featured a lecture under the theme of "fitness"and I was delighted to learn a phrase using a verb "inspire" which thelecturer introduced, as "What inspired you to exercise?."The verb "inspire" was effectively used to express "what made you want to(do something)". In Japanese we may say "Anata ga undou shiyou to omottakikkake wa nanndesuka" to communicate the same idea, in which none of the component words is equivalent to "inspire".Therefore I guess not many of us Japanese-speaking English learners arelikely to instantly come up with the verb.

(1)では日本語でいう「バストアップ」は英語でどのように表すのが適切かというと、Now let me present examples that express what we say "basutoappu(bust up)" in English:胸のボリュームを大きくする、という意味では動詞enlargeないしその派生語名詞enlargementを使って以下のように表します:If you refer to increase the volume of breasts, the following phrasesusing the verb "enlarge" or its derivative noun "enlargement" make sense:名詞表現:breast enlargement動詞表現:enlarge one's breasts(2)また、ただ大きくするだけでなくて「垂れた・崩れた」の反対の、ポジションや形が整ったバストの状態にするという意味では動詞enhanceないしその派生語名詞enhancementを使って以下のように表すのがよいと思います:Or if you mean to communicate an idea opposite to "sagging"or "deformed", in other words, an idea of getting one's breastsuplifted as well as forming nice round shape besides enlarging them, you can employ the verb "enhance" or its derivative noun "enhancement"to express like these:名詞表現:breast enhancement動詞表現:enhance one's breasts

(Later I will add equivalents in other languages)(1-Japanese)以前から「バストアップ(する)」あるいは「キャリアアップ(する)」のような「なんとかアップ」パターンの言葉が気になっていたのですが、これらのほとんどは和製英語ですよね。(1-English)I have been feeling something wrong with the often-used"something up" words in Japanese as "bust up" or "career up", andthese days I strongly suspect these are mostly Japanglish that do notmake sense to English speakers.(2-Japanese)「バストアップ」については、まず「バスト」という言葉が英語で使われる場合は日本語のそれよりずっと限られています(だいたい、日本語でいう「胸囲」の範疇)日本語で「バスト」という場合のほとんどは「胸・乳房」をあらわすbreast(s)を使うほうが適切です。また、この意味のUPは副詞で、本来は動作動詞の後につける(例:speed up, speak up)ので、名詞のあとにUPをつけるのは文法的に適切でない、と説明できるかと思います。名詞万能の日本語では名詞にUPがついても違和感がないのかもしれませんが・・・。(2-English)As for the "bust up", first I should mention that the word"bust" in English has far narrower sense compared with that usedin Japanese. I suppose the English "bust" may be almost equivalent to"kyoui.")In English, it is appropriate in most cases in which we say "bust"to express "breast(s)."Besides, the latter word "up" in this sense is originally an adverbthat follows action verbs to add senses as intensifying, enhancing, increasing the volume, position, temperature etc. to such actions,as "speed up" or "speak up."Therefore I may clarify the point what is wrong with "bust up" orother "something up" use of words as grammatically inappropriate, mistakenly placing an adverb after nouns.Yet we Japanese, native speakers of a language in which nouns areomnipotent, have gotten accustomed to such usage.(つづく:では「バストアップ」は英語で何と表すか)

I suppose "portray" may fit better in some of such situations. Hopefully we can use this verb!portray someone/something as XXは直訳すると「誰・何々をXXと描写する」です。が、日本語「描写する」「表現する」からの発想ですとdescribeかexpressしか思い浮かばないかもしれないですよね。動詞portrayが使えるとかっこいいですね。

The original meaning may be "ecologically-friendly" or "environmentallyconscious" depending on the context. They are used mostly as attributive adjectives and sometimes more appropriate as a translation for"eco" used in Japanese. (3-French)Mon sentiment contre le mot à part, j’ai recherché "eco"en le moteur de recherche d’Alc Co., Ltd. pour savoir de quoi la abréviation est-ce que ce mot.J’ai vu plusieurs nouveax mots avec préfixe de "eco" en anglais, qui monstre que le terme, qui parait être utilisé au façonvernaculaire au Japon, s’est établi dans l anglais aussi.Le sens originale peut être "ecologically-friendly" ou "environmentallyconscious" dépendant du contexte. And I guess the watch also has enabled meto nurture and intensify special sense on VERBS, which are the only part of speech that involves the concept of TIME, when it comes to language learning.(2-Russian)Я думаю что я усвоила синесесия скоторой я ощущу цвет или форма во временижия с такыми наручныими часами. (多言語でUPします)(1-Japanese)実は時計を眺めるのがもともと好きだったのですが、特に最近は時計を見ているとなんとも不思議な感覚を持つことがあります。(1-English)I originally am fond of watching clocks or watches. And particularly recently I have quite a mysterious sense when I have a lookat any of them.(1-Spanish)A mí por naturaleza me gusta mirar un reloj. Y especialmenterecientemente tengo un sentido misterioso cuando doy una vista por algode eso. (2-Japanese)時間、という目に見えないものが、いうなれば「薄い金箔をまぶした温かい空気の流れ」のように感じられるのです。実は、英語や自分が学習している言語の「動詞」を(文字で)見たときにも同じ感覚をおぼえています。(2-English)I may verbalize the sense this way: I sense time, which is definitely invisible, as something like a current of warm air with thin gold foil. And I actually have an identical sense when I seeverbs of English or any language I learn in written text.(2-Spanish)Se puede verbalizar el sentido como siguiente: siento queel tiempo, que es definitivamente invisible, como algo parecido conuna corriente de aire cálido con pan de oro ligero. Y a decir verdadtengo un sentido idéntico cuando encontro verbos del inglés u otrosidiomas estoy aprendiendo.

(1-Japanese)私の「30歳からできたラクラク英語学習法」テキストを御利用いただいている方からよく頂く質問と、それに対する私のお答えをときどきご紹介します。(1-English)Starting this time let me introduce sometimesthe frequently-asked questions from the users of my Englishlearning material and my resplies to respective question.(2-Japanese)(質問1)「テキストの対訳英文は覚えないといけないのですか?私は覚えることが苦手なんですが・・・」(2-English)(Question 1)Should I memorize English equivalents of the text?I wonder if I will be able to, as cramming is not my cup of tea."(3-Japanese)(回答)学校の勉強ではないので、覚えることを要求するわけではありません。しかし、対訳の中で役立ちそうだ・面白いと思われたものがありましたら、それをセンテンスごと、その文で使われている一般動詞を意識しながら暗記することにより表現力アップに役立つはずです。(3-English)(Reply)As this material is not one you do in regular schoolEnglish classes, you are not obliged to memorize thoseequivalents. However, I recommend you learn any partthat intrigues you or appears to serve to improve yourEnglish, desirably in the whole sentence being alert onregular verbs used therein. I am convinced that it willserve you to enhance your active English command.(4-Japanese)英文の「暗記」作業については、それ自体が得意か苦手かというよりは、英語をやる上で明確な目標があるか否かによるモチベーションの問題だと思います。極端な話、ある英語の文章を暗記して人前で暗誦できれば100万円もらえる、というのでしたら必死で暗記しますよね?(4-English)And as for ability to memorize English sentences,I suppose it depend on whether you have set a concrete goal tolearn English rather than whether you are naturally talentedto do it.To put it in extreme terms, you will desperately memorizea passage/passages if you are promised to gain 1 million yenon condition that you perfectly learn and recite itin public.(5-Japanese)仕事でもプライベートでも何でも結構ですので、「このために英語をやる」という目標を設定されることをお勧めします。(5-English)My bet is that you create a goal, regardless ofpurpose, of something for which you need English competence.(6-Japanese)技術的には、各センテンスの中で「どういう動詞がどのように使われているか」※をはじめにマークするとセンテンスの中軸をおさえられるので暗記しやすくなります。(6-English)And let me give you a technical tip: you will find iteasier to memorize sentences if you mark what verbs are usedin what ways, because you can grasp the core of a sentence.※次回、「動詞を意識する」の具体的意味を説明します。

(多言語でUPします)(1-Japanese)この「漢字2文字語」(管理、準備など)は中国語では名詞であると同時に動詞としても使われているわけですが、日本語ではあくまでも「名詞」です。(1-English)Those two-chinese-character verbs as kanri or junbiare used as verbs as well as nouns in Chinese, but in Japanesethey are definitely nouns.(1-German)Diese Wörter mit zwei chinesisches Schriftzeichenwie kanri oder junbi werden wie die Zeitwörter und Hauptwortes zugleich gegebrauchet, aber in Japanisch sie sind durchaus die Haptwortes. (2-Japanese)しかし、実際の意味としては動詞ないし動名詞に類似するため、日本語では、この2文字名詞を使えば動詞を使わなくても意味の通る文を作れるということがしばしばあるのです。。(2-English)Yet actually they have meanings similar to verbsor gerunds; we can make a sentence that makes sense withthese two-letter nouns without using regular verbs.(2-German)Doch in Wirklichkeit haben sie die Bedeutung ähnlichHauptwortes oder Gerundien; wir können mit dieser zwei chinesisches Schriftzeichen einen sinnvollen Satz bilden undohne Zeitwörter zu gebrauchen.

(多言語でUPします)(1-Japanese)中国語では主語のすぐ後に動詞をもってくることが多い点で英語(ないし、世界の多くの言語)と共通することは中国語学習者に限らず、多くの方がご存じだと思います。(1-English)I suppose quite a few people, besides those who learnChinese, are aquainted with the characteristic of basic Chinese sentence structure in which a verb comes right after the subject, similar to that of English or many other languages. 。)(つづく)(2-English)Meanwhile, I suggest that we, native speakers ofJapanese should be aware that we use two-chinese-characterwords as nouns, while in Chinese they are used, with characters in identical/quasi identical forms, as verbs; you may realize itby recalling such words kanri(control) or jumbi(preparation.)(2-Russian)С дркгой стороны я предложу что тот, у которыеродной язык по-японски, нужно знать что слова с двумя китайскимипроясхождениями использаваны нами как имя существительное,хотя использаваны слова, с идентичным или квази-идентичнымпроясхождениями, как глагол по-китайски.
