James Hagens was in contention to return to the Bruins’ Game 5 lineup on Tuesday.
Boston coach Marco Sturm said with Viktor Arvidsson out and Lukas Reichel coming out, he did consider returning the team’s 2025 first-round draft pick to the lineup.
But with the Bruins facing possible elimination, he opted for Mikey Eyssimont and Alex Steeves , who each had played more games this season.
Hagens played in the first three games of the series and was solid in Games 1 and 2 and inconsistent in Game 3. He has no points in three games and just one assist in five career NHL games.
“He was in the mix too. It was a Game 7 for us. I didn’t want to put him in a bad spot. He still needs to learn a lot,” Sturm said. “He played great so far to this point. Hopefully I can use him again down the stretch. But yesterday I thought I need experience going into a game like that.”
Neither Eyssimont nor Steeves got a point in the game, but both were physical and effective.
The Bruins play Game 6 on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at TD Garden.
