Alex Cora was just over a year into his contract extension when the Red Sox fired him on Saturday night after a 10-17 start to the season.
But Mark DeRosa believes it was a good thing for Cora .
"Alex Cora makes out like a bandit for me," DeRosa said on MLB Network . "He gets out of a potential dysfunctional situation right now. There's obviously a disconnect between the way Craig Breslow and their front office wants to run this team.
"I look at Alex Cora, if I'm him, it feels like they did him a favor," he later added . "They gotta pay him to go plan his next attack. Where's he gonna win his next World Series?"
Cora is owed $13.54 million through 2027.
The decision to move on from Cora 27 games into a 162-game season came from chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.
"Craig leads our baseball operation, and he's made several bold decisions and recommendations, and this was one of them," team president Sam Kennedy said on Sunday . "And we fully support it, and that's why we took the action we took (Saturday)."
It's unclear where Cora will end up next or if he decides to continue managing. He said several times he doesn't want to be an "old" manager and expressed interest in a front-office role.
What comes next for Cora is up to him. It's possible teams like the New York Mets or the Philadelphia Phillies will look for a new manager sooner rather than later.
For now, Cora is happy .
