If there's a Goldilocks mattress size, it's probably the queen. Spacious enough for most couples, luxurious for solo sleepers and practical for many bedrooms, it's easy to see why queen mattresses remain America's most popular size . The best queen mattresses "strike a balance between space, accessibility and price," says Megan Anderson , director of merchandising at Mattress Firm. Research suggests people sleeping on queen- and king-size beds report higher satisfaction with their comfort and overall sleep experience than those on smaller mattresses.
In this story
"Having enough space in bed directly affects sleep continuity — less room can mean more micro-awakenings from movement or restriction," says Nicole Moshfegh , a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist in Los Angeles.
Of course, many other issues come into play. Moshfegh notes that sleeping on the right-size mattress is "often as important as firmness or materials for sleep quality." A mattress that's too firm can leave your shoulders and hips aching. One that's too soft can throw your spine out of alignment. And one with poor motion isolation can leave you glaring at your tossing-and-turning bedmate at 3 a.m.
That's where Yahoo comes in. To come up with the best queen mattresses, we had our testers sleep on more than two dozen beds in their own homes for weeks — and often months. They evaluated each mattress on the factors that matter most in real life, like pressure relief, motion isolation, cooling performance, ease of movement and overall sleep quality. We then analyzed the results, reviewed hundreds of tester notes and followed up with many participants to better understand which mattresses merely made a good first impression — and which delivered night after night.
These are the queen mattresses that rose to the top.
Best queen mattress of 2026
Mattress type:Hybrid | Height:14" | Firmness options:Soft (5), medium (6), firm (7) | Trial period:120 nights
The Bear Elite Hybrid earned our top overall pick for best mattress — and then kept winning, taking home best overall hybrid and best mattress for side sleepers across our broader testing. It earned perfect scores across all sleep positions and one of the highest overall ratings.
Our testers, Greg and Priscilla Farman, are an active couple in their 70s with different sleep positions, body types and aches and pains — exactly the kind of real-world stress test that tends to expose a mattress's weaknesses. In Bear's case, there weren't many to find. The Farmans both reported waking more refreshed and feeling better supported. Priscilla's chronic foot pain, which had been worsening on her previous mattress, became "less noticeable." She praised how easy it was to change positions — a stark contrast to the "stuck" sensation she'd experienced on all-foam beds. "We both sleep well on this mattress and wake up feeling ready to face the day. All around, it's delivering," she said.
The 852-zoned pocketed coils kept the middle supportive and the edges stable — and that held up through our testing. Consumer Reports ' simulated eight-year durability evaluations gave it top marks — so this isn't just a mattress that feels good now. It's also one of the select few mattresses we tested that's endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), which cites its ability to support healthy spinal alignment.
Know before you buy:Bear sleeps temperature-neutral rather than actively cool, so hot sleepers may want to look at the Aurora Luxe or Sleep Number Climate360 instead — and if what you're really after is that deep, sink-into-the-foam feeling, this isn't it. For everyone else, it's the closest thing to a sure thing we found.
- 5/5 overall sleep experience score
- Comfortable for all sleep positions
- Testers reported pain relief
- Excellent motion isolation and edge support
- Queen priced over $2,200 when not on sale
- Heavy and awkward to move without help
- White-glove delivery and mattress removal cost extra ($100–$200)
Mattress type:Hybrid | Height:13.5" | Firmness:Medium (6) | Trial period:120 nights
Queens are the most popular mattress size for couples, so how they handle partner disturbance matters. The queen-size Helix Midnight Luxe stood out for its ability to maintain sturdy edges, which kept our tester, Yahoo Health Editor Holly Pevzner , from feeling like she was about to go overboard as her dog — and husband — slowly claimed more and more mattress real estate. Its pocketed coil design helped absorb movement without creating that stuck-in-the-bed feeling some motion-isolating mattresses have, earning top marks for both bed-sharing comfort and edge support.
Perhaps more importantly, everyone slept better. Pevzner gave the mattress a 5/5 for overall sleep quality, morning comfort and ease of movement. Her lower back pain improved , her husband's sciatica flared less often and even the dog became such a fan that she started heading to bed before the humans. (Notably, like the Bear, the Helix earned an ACA endorsement too.)
Know before you buy:While the Midnight Luxe actually tied our top overall mattress in weighted scoring, it's important to note that it sleeps temperature-neutral, not especially cool. It has a medium-firm feel , so sleepers who prefer a deeply plush mattress — or sensitive side-sleepers — may want something softer.
- 5/5 overall sleep experience score
- Tester reported improved back pain
- Excellent motion isolation and edge support
- Easy to move on
- Queen priced over $2,100 when not on sale
- Only one firmness option
- May not be soft enough for all side-sleepers
Mattress type:Hybrid | Height:13" | Firmness options:Dual-sided (medium soft and medium firm) | Trial period:120 nights
Side sleepers need a mattress that cushions pressure points without letting the rest of their body fall out of alignment — and the Layla Hybrid nailed that balance, thanks in part to its hybrid design. "Hybrids usually allow for proper support for an extended period of time, which is why I recommend them for side sleepers," says chiropractor Dustin DebRoy , manager of chiropractic education and relations at The Joint Chiropractic. The mattress is flippable, with a medium-soft side and a medium-firm side, allowing sleepers to choose the level of cushioning that works best for them.
Yahoo Senior Content Operations Analyst — and dedicated side sleeper — Lucy Wan preferred the softer side. Within weeks, the hip pain she'd been waking up with for years was gone. "I didn't realize how much pain I was in until I slept on this mattress and my hip issues disappeared," she said. She gave it a perfect 5/5 side-sleeping score, but the real proof came later: Four months after starting her test, Wan's hip pain was still gone, and she reported sleeping longer stretches and waking less often at night.
Know before you buy:Despite earning top marks for bed-sharing comfort, Wan sometimes felt as though she was sliding off the bed when sleeping near the perimeter, a potential drawback for anyone sharing a queen. Back sleeping also proved less comfortable than side sleeping on this mattress.
- 5/5 side-sleeping score
- Two firmness options in one mattress
- Excellent pressure relief at shoulders and hips
- Tester reported noticeable pain relief
- Poor edge support
- Soft side may not be ideal for back sleepers
- Firmer side didn't feel as firm as expected
Mattress type:Hybrid | Height:12" | Firmness:Medium | Trial period:90 nights
The Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid is proof that you don't need to spend luxury-mattress money to get a great queen. It was a clear standout in our testing: its pocketed coils, a coil type known for responsive contouring and reduced motion transfer, helped the bed deliver strong stability, excellent edge support and minimal motion transfer at a price point where compromises are usually expected.
While Yahoo Senior Technology Writer Rick Broida initially found the mattress firmer than he'd like, after a short adjustment period, he came around. "It felt solid and comfortable, with no disturbances," he said. Ultimately, Broida gave the mattress perfect scores for side sleeping, edge support, ease of movement and bed-sharing comfort — all areas where budget mattresses often struggle.
Unlike many budget foam mattresses, the Sealy felt supportive without being stiff and sturdy without feeling hard. It also includes free white-glove delivery and mattress removal when bought through Sealy — a perk that's often reserved for pricier beds.
Know before you buy:This Sealy Posturepedic comes in just one firmness level, which falls on the firmer side, and it took our tester about 2 weeks to fully adjust. Its supportive feel won't be for everyone, and long-term Consumer Reports testing suggests some side sleepers — particularly those who prefer deeper contouring — may be happier on a softer mattress.
- 5/5 overall sleep experience score
- Comfortable across all sleep positions
- Queen priced under $1,000
- Free white-glove delivery and mattress removal
- Only one firmness option
- Firmer feel may not suit all side sleepers
- $175 return/exchange fee
Mattress type:Hybrid | Height:13" | Firmness:Medium-firm (7-8) | Trial period:365 nights
A guest-room mattress may be the hardest-working bed in the house. It needs to appeal to side sleepers, back sleepers, occasional stomach sleepers and everyone in between — and not bust your budget.
Another ACA-endorsed mattress , the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid's balanced feel, approachable price point and broad comfort profile made it our favorite option for guest rooms. Yahoo tester Laura Fraize, a combination sleeper, found the mattress comfortable no matter how she slept, giving the bed top marks for all sleep positions , overall experience, bed-sharing comfort and sleep quality. "I have fallen asleep faster and with more comfort with this mattress — and feel more refreshed in the mornings," she said. She praised the mattress's motion isolation, noting there were "little to no disturbances through the night."
Know before you buy:The edges felt softer than expected, leaving our tester wanting to move closer to the center of the mattress "to feel fully stable." And while the DreamCloud performed well across all sleep positions, dedicated side sleepers may prefer a mattress with deeper contouring.
- 5/5 overall sleep experience score
- Excellent motion isolation
- Solid lumbar support
- Slept noticeably cooler than on their previous mattress
- Weak edge support
- Side-sleeping performance varies
- White-glove service no longer available
Mattress type:Hybrid | Height:17.25" | Firmness options:Medium, plush, firm | Trial period:100 days
For those in the market for a luxury queen mattress, the Beautyrest Black Series Four delivered some of the strongest pressure-relief and comfort scores in our testing. It feels expensive in the best possible way: soft, supportive and exceptionally well-made.
Before testing, Darlene and Tim Smith, both side sleepers in their mid-60s, routinely woke up with hip, shoulder and back pain. But after several weeks on the Beautyrest Black Series Four Plush Summit Top, Tim said his chronic knee and hip pain dropped from a 5 to a 2 on the pain scale — and both reported waking up more refreshed and with noticeably fewer aches and pains.
Motion isolation was another standout, earning perfect scores for bed-sharing comfort and helping the couple sleep through each other's movements. Consumer Reports also awarded the mattress a 5/5 for average and large side sleepers after simulated long-term testing.
Know before you buy:While the plush surface proved comfortable, it can make stomach sleeping and switching positions more difficult. The mattress is exceptionally tall at 17.25 inches and costs roughly $5,600 for a queen. That's no small investment, though it's still about $1,700 below what recent luxury-mattress shoppers say feels "too expensive."
- 5/5 overall sleep experience score
- Exceptional back-sleeping comfort
- Excellent motion isolation
- Solid edge support
- Not ideal for stomach sleeping
- Rolling over took some effort
- 17.25" height may be too tall for some sleepers
How we test mattresses
Queen mattresses were the most-tested size in Yahoo's mattress program. Roughly half of our team chose to evaluate queen-size beds, giving us extensive feedback across different ages, body types, sleep positions and sleep concerns.
Each mattress was evaluated using detailed scoring rubrics covering pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, ease of movement, temperature regulation and overall sleep quality. Testers assessed factors such as setup, firmness, materials, durability and long-term comfort over multiple nights of use. We considered warranty coverage, trial periods and third-party testing when available.

How to choose the best queen mattress
The best queen mattress for you depends on more than price. Sleep position, body size, bed-sharing habits and bedroom space all play a role.
Make sure a queen is the right size
A standard queen mattress measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, making it seven inches wider and five inches longer than a full-size mattress. Queens are generally a comfortable fit for adults up to 6'2", since mattress-sizing guidance recommends choosing a bed that provides at least three inches of extra length beyond your height.
A queen also works well for:
✓Couples who don't mind sleeping relatively close together
✓Solo sleepers who like room to spread out
✓Guest rooms
✓Primary bedrooms
Consider who will be sleeping on it
One reason queen mattresses remain so popular is their flexibility. They can comfortably accommodate a wide range of sleepers, but your needs should still guide your decision.
-
Sharing with a partner?Prioritize motion isolation and edge support.
-
Sleeping solo?Focus on comfort, pressure relief and your preferred sleep position.
-
Shopping for a guest room?Look for a mattress with broad appeal across a range of sleep styles.

Sharing with pets or kids? You may want to consider whether a king would give you more usable space.
Think about your sleep position
-
Side sleeperstypically need more cushioning at the shoulders and hips.
-
Back sleepersoften benefit from firmer support that helps keep the spine aligned.
-
Stomach sleepersusually do best on a firmer surface that prevents the hips from sinking too deeply.

FAQs
What are the dimensions of a queen mattress?
A standard queen mattress measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. That's seven inches wider and five inches longer than a full-size mattress, while offering 16 fewer inches of width than a king. At 80 inches long, it's generally a comfortable fit for adults up to 6'2".
Is a queen mattress big enough for two people?
For many couples, yes. A queen mattress offers enough room for two adults while fitting comfortably in most bedrooms. It's generally a good fit for couples up to 6'2" who don't mind sleeping relatively close together. If you or your partner are larger-bodied, frequently sleep with pets or children or simply prefer more personal space, a king may be worth considering. And for anyone over 6'2", a California king (at 84 inches long) is the recommended baseline for comfort. Learn more about choosing the right size mattress for your space and sleep style.
How much does a good queen mattress cost?
In our testing, some of our favorites landed around the $1,000 mark, with premium models costing several times more. The right choice depends on your budget, sleep needs and how long you plan to keep the mattress. Learn when expensive mattresses are actually worth it .
When should you choose a king instead of a queen?
"Your queen mattress may be too small when you unconsciously adapt around it," says Moshfegh. "For instance, are you sleeping rigidly on one side, drifting toward the edge, waking during partner movement or is one person regularly migrating to the couch? Often, the issue shows up as 'restless sleep' rather than obvious discomfort."
Since a king mattress is 16 inches wider than a queen, it can be just the extra room needed.
