FOXBOROUGH - The Buffalo Bills will have to take on the Patriots in their pivotal AFC East showdown without their best corner.
Christian Benford, having arguably his best season, is out today.
He suffered a toe injury during practice this week.
Benford was spotted in a walking boot on Thursday and didn’t practice on Friday.
Bills coach Sean McDermott didn’t think it would be a long-term injury, but said during the week it was “frustrating” having one of his best defensive players hurt in practice and potentially unavailable against the Patriots.
The 25-year-old cornerback had scored touchdowns in back-to-back weeks.
Two weeks ago, he was the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Week in a win over the Steelers, intercepting Mason Rudolph and returning a fumble for a touchdown.
Then last Sunday, Benford snared a game-changing pick-six off Joe Burrow in Buffalo’s comeback win over the Bengals.
Rookie corner Maxwell Hairston will likely get a lot more playing time.
Said McDermott: “I’m confident that somebody will step up if that’s what’s needed here.”
Here are the Bills inactives for the game:
8 LB Terrel Bernard
13 WR Gabe Davis
25 S Darnell Savage
47 CB Christian Benford 68
72 DT Phidarian Mathis
77 T Chase Lundt
