The Philadelphia Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson earlier this season and Don Mattingly ultimately took over as interim manager. Mattingly has done a tremendous job, as Philadelphia has turned the season around. The Phillies, following a lackluster start to the 2026 campaign, are now only two games behind the Atlanta Braves for first place in the National League East standings. Mattingly's success has been impressive , but is he open to managing past this season if the Phillies ask?
"Don Mattingly, asked in an interview before the game how he would feel if the Phillies approached him about managing beyond this year, says yes, he'd like to do that. He's working on an interim tag at the moment. Says it depends, of course, on what David Dombrowski would like to do," Buster Olney of ESPN reported before the Phillies' game on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds .
Alex Cora, who was fired by the Boston Red Sox earlier this season, was immediately mentioned as a potential manager candidate for the Phillies. However, Cora reportedly turned down the job . Rumors have swirled that Philadelphia could ask him to manage once again during the offseason, though.

It will be interesting to see if the Phillies still end up interviewing different candidates after the season given Mattingly success. Of course, there is still plenty of baseball left to be played and things could change before the offseason. At the very least, one has to imagine that Mattingly will be a candidate to become the next manager of the ball club.
For now, he will continue doing everything he can to lead the Phillies as the interim manager.
