With the Northeast Ohio sports scene's curiosity piqued about whether Akron native LeBron James will return to the Cavaliers in NBA free agency this summer, it's at least worth noting how James views the significant changes the Cavs made before the Feb. 5 trade deadline.

"They're going for it," James said of the Cavs (34-21, fourth in the Eastern Conference) during an episode of the "Mind the Game" podcast he co-hosts with fellow NBA legend Steve Nash .

To James' point, some Cavs observers have made the case the franchise entered NBA Finals-or-bust mode by trading two-time All-Star point guard Darius Garland and a second-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Clippers for 11-time All-Star point guard James Harden on Feb. 3. Garland is 26, and Harden is 36.

"They felt like they needed another playmaker, someone that's been there, kind of been in this situation before, and they added James [Harden], perennial All-Star who's still putting up All-Star numbers," James said during the episode of his podcast released Feb. 17 . "[Harden] gives Donovan Mitchell another, like, ball handler guy who can make shots late in the game."

LeBron James says Dennis Schroder , Keon Ellis will be 'really, really good' for Cavaliers

A 2003 St. Vincent-St. Mary High School graduate, James went out of his way to ensure his podcast audience doesn't overlook the Cavs trading wing De'Andre Hunter to the Sacramento Kings on Jan. 31 for point guard Dennis Schroder and guard Keon Ellis.

"Those pickups that they got from Sac as well, you know, Schroder, a former teammate of mine, you know that's going to compete every single night, and Keon Ellis, the guy's going to compete, make shots," James said. "Like, those guys are going to be, I think, really, really good for that team, especially in the East, where it's a lot of bulk. You've got to have some dogs in there, so I think they added a lot."

Cavs news: Former Cavaliers GM David Griffin praises Cleveland for James Harden trade

James and Nash discussed several other trades executed before the league's deadline, but whenever James comments on his hometown Cavs, it stands out, especially because he played 11 seasons (2003-10, 2014-18) in Cleveland and led the organization to the 2016 NBA title.

Is LeBron James retiring?

The 41-year-old James has repeatedly insisted he doesn't know whether he will retire after this season, which is his eighth with the Los Angeles Lakers . If the NBA's all-time leading scorer were to continue his playing career, it would not be difficult to envision him doing so during a third stint with the Cavs.

Cavs All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell says becoming a teammate of LeBron James 'would be special'

During All-Star Weekend, Cavs guard Donovan Mitchell answered a question about the possibility on SiriusXM NBA Radio .

"As a Bron fan, man, to be able to be a teammate, obviously, that would be special," Mitchell said. "But that's not something that is [in] my control. I control what we've got here. There's always going to be reports. It's natural. It's going to be a thing.

"My main focus right now is trying to get this championship. And whatever happens, it happens. That's not up to me. That's not up to anybody else in the locker room. So I'm big on believing what I can control, but, yeah, it's LeBron James, right? But at the end of the day, that's not my focus. I'm not here to worry about that. I know I'm going to get asked about that a bunch all weekend. But my focus is we just traded for James Harden , Dennis Schroder, Keon Ellis, hey, let's try to find a way to get a ring and go from there."

When do the Cavs play again

The Cavs' quest to find a way will resume at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, when they return from the All-Star break to face the Brooklyn Nets at Rocket Arena.
